A significant number of paediatric surgical patients undergone clean surgical procedures. Most of the paediatric surgeon use perioperative prophylactic antibiotic in this clean procedure because of undue fear of infection in their mind. The objective of this study is to evaluate whether the use of perioperative prophylactic antibiotics have an effect to prevent post operative wound infection in clean operation in paediatric surgical patients.

Background: Allergic sensitisation has been ascribed to a dysregulated relationship between allergen-specific Th1, Th2 and regulatory T cells. We hypothesised that the relationship between these T cell subsets could be better defined using a short-term allergen stimulation system followed by direct analysis of CD154-positive T cells. Using peripheral blood samples from birch pollinosis patients and healthy non-atopic controls, we sought to explore the frequencies and phenotype of birch-stimulated CD154-positive T helper cells following ex vivo birch allergen stimulation.

We aimed to define the basis of AHC/HH in 4 pedigrees of different ethnic backgrounds. One patient was elected to have testicular biopsy which was examined for evidence of carcinoma in situ (CIS).

Three-dimensional in vitro culture techniques for mesenchymal stem cells.

In recent years there has been a growing interest in culturing adherent cells using three-dimensional (3D) techniques, rather than more conventional 2D culture methods. This interest emerges from the realization that growing cells on plastic surfaces cannot truly re-create 3D in vivo conditions and therefore might be limiting the cells' potential. In addition, adult stem cells exist in specialized microenvironments, or niches, where the spatial organization of different niche elements (such as different cell types, extracellular matrix) contributes significantly to stem cell maintenance, which cannot be represented using 2D in vitro models.

Comparison between fine needle aspiration cytology with histopathology to validate accurate diagnosis of palpable breast lump.

A prospective study of 114 patients was conducted to assess the clinical correlation and diagnostic accuracy between FNAC and histopathology of breast lumps. Correlation was found out between clinical suspicion with FNAC and histopathological findings. Microbial contamination of date rutab collected from the markets of Al-Hofuf City in Saudi Arabia.

The microbial contamination of 60 samples from six date cultivars in the rutab stage purchased from different retail outlets in AL-Hofuf City, Saudi Arabia was studied. All samples were found contaminated with aerobic mesophilic bacteria at loads in the order 10(2) to 10(5) cfu/cm(2) with some significant differences among varieties that can be attributed to differences in the weather conditions during rutab season. Also all samples, except only one, were contaminated with molds and yeasts at loads in the order 10(2) to 10(3) cfu/cm(2).

A promising dehydrogenase-based bioanode for a glucose biosensor and glucose/O2 biofuel cell.

A new type of dehydrogenase-based amperometric glucose biosensor was constructed using glucose dehydrogenase (GDH) which was immobilized on the edge-plane pyrolytic graphite (EPPG) electrode modified with poly(phenosafranin)-functionalized single-walled carbon nanotubes (PPS-SWCNTs). The PPS-SWCNT-modified EPPG electrode was prepared by electropolymerization of phenosafranin on the EPPG electrode which had been previously coated with SWCNTs. The performance of the GDH/PPS-SWCNT/EPPG bioanode was evaluated using cyclic voltammetry and amperometry in the presence of glucose.

Prevention and management of obesity largely depends on patient motivation and education and these, in turn, can be greatly facilitated by adequate baseline data on the knowledge, attitude and practice (KAP) of patients. The risk of male breast cancer increases with age, and the median age of diagnosis for men is 10 years later than that for females (67 to 71 years). Evaluation of hearing loss in juvenile insulin dependent patients with diabetes mellitus.

Background: Diabetes mellitus is one of the most important epidemics of our era. Complications of this disease are diverse and include retinopathy, nephropathy and neuropathy. This study has been designed to evaluate hearing loss patterns in young children suffering from IDDM and define risk factors for this complication.

Effects of endothelial cells on human mesenchymal stem cell activity in a three-dimensional in vitro model.

An increasing body of data suggest that mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) reside in a perivascular niche. To more closely mimic this in vivo microenvironment and for better understanding of its complexity, and the factors that regulate the MSC activity, human umbilical vein endothelial cells (HUVECs) were co-cultured with human bone marrow MSCs--using a novel three-dimensional (3D) spheroid co-culture system. Using confocal microscopy of fluorescently labelled cells, we observed HUVECs and MSCs to self-assemble and form organised structures with segregated cell-type partitioning.

Turning round: multipotent stromal cells, a three-dimensional revolution?

Mesenchymal stromal cells (MSC) can be isolated from adult tissues and induced to differentiate into skeletal cells, such as osteoblasts, chondrocytes and adipocytes. Consequently, ex vivo MSC are valuable systems for studying the mechanisms that control tissue-context lineage commitment and may offer broad therapeutic applications in the orthopedic theater and beyond. To date, most of these studies have used MSC grown on two-dimensional (2-D) plastic surfaces.

European regulation on orphan medicinal products: 10 years of experience and future perspectives.

In 2000, regulation on orphan medicinal products was adopted in the European Union with the aim of benefiting patients who suffer from serious, rare conditions for which there is currently no satisfactory treatment. Since then, more than 850 orphan drug designations have been granted by the European Commission based on a positive opinion from the Committee for Orphan Medicinal Products (COMP), and more than 60 orphan drugs have received marketing authorization in Europe. Here, stimulated by the tenth anniversary of the COMP, we reflect on the outcomes and experience gained in the past decade, and contemplate issues for the future, such as catalysing drug development for the large number of rare diseases that still lack effective treatments.

Phytoestrogen intake and cardiovascular risk markers in Bangladeshi postmenopausal women.

Menopause is the transitional event of female life creating a considerable degree of clinical and psychological as well as social problem and it is known to affect the risk markers of cardiovascular diseases. Hormone replacement therapy (HRT) was though to be a cornerstone in the management of menopause, but evidences accumulated in the recent past have raised serious questions regarding its safety and usability. In this context, phytoestrogens are getting increasingly more attention for therapeutic (as an alternate of HRT) and dietary interventions.

A questionnaire-based survey of patient satisfaction with dental care at two general dental practice locations.

Aim: The aim of this study was to survey patient satisfaction with dental care delivered in general practice and to compare the results with those obtained five years earlier using the same questionnaire.

Methodology: A previously piloted patient satisfaction question- naire was distributed to consecutive adult patients of one dentist at two general dental practices on completion of restorative or surgical treatment. The results were compared with those achieved by the same dentist using the same questionnaire five years previously during vocational training (VT).

We assessed the contribution of angiotensin-(1-7) [Ang-(1-7)] to captopril-induced cardiovascular protection in spontaneously hypertensive rats (SHRs) chronically treated with the nitric oxide synthesis inhibitor NG-nitro-L-arginine methyl ester (SHR-l). NG-nitro-L-arginine methyl ester (80 mg/L) administration for 3 weeks increased mean arterial pressure (MAP) from 196 ± 6 to 229 ± 3 mm Hg (P < 0.05).
