Article Synopsis
  • An estimated 2.4 million Americans, including veterans, are chronically infected with hepatitis C (HCV) and it's linked to both liver cancer and potentially other extrahepatic cancers (EHCs).
  • The study reviewed data from 1541 patients at a VA clinic to examine the impact of liver fibrosis and chronic HCV infection on the risk of developing EHCs.
  • Findings indicated that older age and higher liver stiffness measurements are significantly associated with an increased risk of EHCs, particularly prostate, head and neck, lung, and hematologic cancers.
