The currently available treatments for inner ear disorders often involve systemic drug administration, leading to suboptimal drug concentrations and side effects. Cochlear implants offer a potential solution by providing localized and sustained drug delivery to the cochlea. While the mechanical characterization of both the implants and their constituent material is crucial to ensure functional performance and structural integrity during implantation, this aspect has been mostly overlooked.

Practical applications of mechanical metamaterials often involve solving inverse problems aimed at finding microarchitectures that give rise to certain properties. The limited resolution of additive manufacturing techniques often requires solving such inverse problems for specific specimen sizes. Moreover, the candidate microarchitectures should be resistant to fatigue and fracture.

Biomechanical evaluation of additively manufactured patient-specific mandibular cage implants designed with a semi-automated workflow: A cadaveric and retrospective case study.

Objective: Mandibular reconstruction using patient-specific cage implants is a promising alternative to the vascularized free flap reconstruction for nonirradiated patients with adequate soft tissues, or for patients whose clinical condition is not conducive to microsurgical reconstruction. This study aimed to assess the biomechanical performance of 3D printed patient-specific cage implants designed with a semi-automated workflow in a combined cadaveric and retrospective case series study.

Methods: We designed cage implants for two human cadaveric mandibles using our previously developed design workflow.

This cross-sectional study estimated a one-time point seroprevalence rate of Chagas disease among people of Latin American descent in Suffolk County, Long Island, New York. Subjects who met the inclusion criteria were screened using the Chagas Detect Plus Rapid Test (InBios, Seattle, WA) with confirmation via Trypanosoma cruzi enzyme immunoassay and T. cruzi immunoblot assay.

Background: Nuclear factor erythroid 2-related factor 2 (Nrf2) is a crucial transcription factor for cellular redox homeostasis. The association of Nrf2 with elderly female osteoporotic has yet to be fully described. The aim was to elucidate a potential age-dependent Nrf2 contribution to female osteoporosis in mice.

Design of an Affordable, Modular Implant Device for Soft Tissue Tension Assessment and Range of Motion Tracking During Total Hip Arthroplasty.

In hip arthroplasties, surgeons rely on their experience to assess the stability and balance of hip tissues when fitting the implant to their patients. During the operation, surgeons use a modular, temporary set of implants to feel the tension in the surrounding soft tissues and adjust the implant configuration. This process is naturally subjective and therefore depends on the operator.

Semi-automated digital workflow to design and evaluate patient-specific mandibular reconstruction implants.

The reconstruction of large mandibular defects with optimal aesthetic and functional outcomes remains a major challenge for maxillofacial surgeons. The aim of this study was to design patient-specific mandibular reconstruction implants through a semi-automated digital workflow and to assess the effects of topology optimization on the biomechanical performance of the designed implants. By using the proposed workflow, a fully porous implant (LA-implant) and a topology-optimized implant (TO-implant) both made of Ti-6Al-4V ELI were designed and additively manufactured using selective laser melting.

Development of an immunocompetent murine model of pulmonary infection due to Scedosporium apiospermum.

A pulmonary infection model due to Scedosporium apiospermum in immunocompetent mice was developed. BALB/c mice were infected by endotracheal intubation with 5 × 10 conidia/mouse and disease progression was evaluated on days 1, 3, 5, 7, 11, 16, 21, 30, 50 and 60 post-infection through quantitative culture and histopathological analysis of lungs, livers, spleens, brains, and kidneys. There was no extrapulmonary dissemination during the study nor shown to be a lethal infection.

Growth of Colloidal Nanoplate Liquid Crystals Using Temperature Gradients.

Controlling colloidal self-assemblies using external forces is essential to develop modern electro-optical and biomedical devices. Importantly, shape anisotropic colloids can provide optical properties such as birefringence. Here we demonstrate that external temperature gradients can be effective in controlling nematic liquid crystalline (LC) order in suspensions of plate-like colloids also known as nanoplates.

Hepatitis C virus infection in the 1945-1965 birth cohort (baby boomers) in a large urban ED.

Introduction: The US Preventive Services Task Force recommends one-time screening of the 1945-1965 birth cohort (baby boomers) for hepatitis C (HCV) infection. New York State legislation mandates screening of baby boomers for HCV in most patient care settings except the emergency department (ED). This cross-sectional study explores baby boomer knowledge of HCV, prevalence of HCV infection, and linkage to care from a large urban ED.

Patient education and care for peritoneal dialysis catheter placement: a quality improvement study.

Background And Objectives: Peritoneal dialysis catheter (PDC) complications are an important barrier to peritoneal dialysis (PD) utilization. Practice guidelines for PDC placement exist, but it is unknown if these recommendations are followed. We performed a quality improvement study to investigate this issue.

How first-generation students learn to navigate education systems: a case study of First Graduate.

Students from underrepresented groups who seek to become the first in their family to attend college confront economically and racially stratified education systems. This article reports findings from an evaluation of First Graduate, an organization that offers college advising, mentoring, tutoring, and case management to first-generation students starting in seventh grade. We highlight three systems that youth say they encountered on their pathway to college: open enrollment, course taking, and college admissions.
