Descriptive epidemiology of Lassa fever, its trend, seasonality, and mortality predictors in Ebonyi State, South- East, Nigeria, 2018-2022.

Background: Nigeria is an epicenter for Lassa fever. Ebonyi state is located in the South-Eastern region of Nigeria where a high burden of Lassa fever has been reported. Therefore, this study was designed to assess the epidemiology of Lassa fever, its seasonality, trend, and mortality predictors in Ebonyi state, South-East, Nigeria.

International Multicenter Retrospective Study From the Ultra-rare Sarcoma Working Group on Low-grade Fibromyxoid Sarcoma, Sclerosing Epithelioid Fibrosarcoma, and Hybrid Forms: Outcome of Primary Localized Disease.

The aim of the study was to report the outcome of primary localized low-grade fibromyxoid sarcoma (LGFMS), sclerosing epithelioid fibrosarcoma (SEF), and hybrid LGFMS/SEF (H-LGFMS/SEF). Patients with primary localized LGFMS, SEF, or H-LGFMS/SEF, surgically treated with curative intent from January 2000 to September 2022, were enrolled from 14 countries and 27 institutions. Pathologic inclusion criteria were predefined by expert pathologists.

Clinical benefit and fragility evaluation of systemic therapy trials for advanced soft tissue sarcoma.

Background: The clinical benefit of systemic anticancer therapies can be unclear despite positive trials, and outcomes may not translate to real-world practice. This study evaluated the benefit of soft tissue sarcoma (STS) treatments using the European Society of Medical Oncology Magnitude of Clinical Benefit Scale (MCBS) v1.1 and measured the robustness of STS trial results using Fragility Index (FI).

Temporary treatment cessation compared with continuation of tyrosine kinase inhibitors for adults with renal cancer: the STAR non-inferiority RCT.

Background: There is interest in using treatment breaks in oncology, to reduce toxicity without compromising efficacy.

Trial Design: A Phase II/III multicentre, open-label, parallel-group, randomised controlled non-inferiority trial assessing treatment breaks in patients with renal cell carcinoma.

Methods: Patients with locally advanced or metastatic renal cell carcinoma, starting tyrosine kinase inhibitor as first-line treatment at United Kingdom National Health Service hospitals.

Nexus among indigenous languages, agricultural radio programmes and behavioural change towards agricultural practices in Nigeria.

This study investigated the interrelationship between indigenous languages, agricultural radio programmes and behavioural change towards agricultural practices in Nigeria, focusing on three states (Benue, Nasarawa and Plateau). The following research objectives guided the study: to ascertain farmers' awareness of radio programmes in indigenous languages, identify farmers' sources of information, ascertain farmers' access to agricultural extension workers and the language of engagement, and examine the influence of radio programmes in indigenous languages on farmers' behaviour towards agricultural practices. The study adopted a survey research design with a questionnaire administered to 663 randomly selected farmers in Plateau, Nasarawa, and Benue states using a multistage sampling technique.

A Phase II, Open-Label, Randomized Trial of Durvalumab With Olaparib or Cediranib in Patients With Mismatch Repair-Proficient Colorectal or Pancreatic Cancer.

Background: The use of immunotherapy in mismatch repair proficient colorectal cancer (pMMR-CRC) or pancreatic adenocarcinoma (PDAC) is associated with limited efficacy. DAPPER (NCT03851614) is a phase 2, basket study randomizing patients with pMMR CRC or PDAC to durvalumab with olaparib (durvalumab + olaparib) or durvalumab with cediranib (durvalumab + cediranib).

Methods: PDAC or pMMR-CRC patients were randomized to either durvalumab+olaparib (arm A), or durvalumab + cediranib (arm B).

Background: Identifying patterns in the distribution of new HIV infections in the population is critical for HIV programmatic interventions. This study aimed to determine the distribution of New HIV infection by applying the incidence patterns mathematical model to data from Lagos state.

Methods: The incidence patterns model (IPM) software is a mathematical model developed by UNAIDS to estimate the demographic and epidemic patterns of HIV infections.

Rice husk silica blended fillers for engine mount application.

The functional properties of engine mounts largely depend on the rubber compound formulation. This study proposes the use of rice husk-derived silica (RHS) blended with carbon black (N772) as an effective and environmentally friendly substitute for fillers used in rubber engine mounts (REMs). CV-60 natural rubber was filled with the blended fillers at various ratios, and their compatibility for use as rubber engine mounts (REMs) was assessed.

Background: Immune-checkpoint inhibitors (ICI) can lead to immune-related adverse events (irAEs) in a significant proportion of patients. The mechanisms underlying irAEs development are mostly unknown and might involve multiple immune effectors, such as T cells, B cells and autoantibodies (AutoAb).

Methods: We used custom autoantigen (AutoAg) microarrays to profile AutoAb related to irAEs in patients receiving ICI.

Demographic and epidemiological transitions and burden of adolescent healthcare in sub-Saharan Africa: A review.

This review's main objective is to discuss how demographic and epidemiological transitions relate to the burden of adolescent healthcare in sub-Saharan Africa (SSA). The review explicitly discussed the burden of adolescent healthcare, the current African policies on adolescent healthcare, and gaps in the African policies compared with Europe and North America. We also examined how adolescent healthcare policies evolve and documented the recommended essential part of the policy for enhancing its sustainability.

Safety, Immunologic, and Clinical Activity of Durvalumab in Combination with Olaparib or Cediranib in Advanced Leiomyosarcoma: Results of the DAPPER Clinical Trial.

Purpose: Non-inflamed (cold) tumors such as leiomyosarcoma do not benefit from immune checkpoint blockade (ICB) monotherapy. Combining ICB with angiogenesis or PARP inhibitors may increase tumor immunogenicity by altering the immune cell composition of the tumor microenvironment (TME). The DAPPER phase II study evaluated the safety, immunologic, and clinical activity of ICB-based combinations in pretreated patients with leiomyosarcoma.

[F]FDG PET/CT in the Initial Staging and Restaging of Soft-Tissue or Bone Sarcoma in Patients with Negative or Equivocal Findings for Metastases or Limited Recurrence on Conventional Work-up: Results of a Prospective Multicenter Registry.

The purpose of this study was to determine the impact of [F]FDG PET/CT on the initial staging, restaging, clinical management, and outcomes of patients with soft-tissue and bone sarcomas. This single-arm, prospective multicenter registry enrolled 304 patients with 320 [F]FDG PET/CT scans (November 2018 to October 2021). Eligibility included the initial staging of a grade 2 or higher or ungradable soft-tissue or bone sarcoma, with negative or equivocal findings for nodal or distant metastases on conventional imaging before curative-intent therapy, or restaging of patients with a history of treated sarcoma with a suspicion or confirmation of local recurrence or limited metastatic disease who were being considered for curative-intent or salvage therapy.

Assessing the Correlation Between Patient-Specific Characteristics and Braden Pressure Injury Risk Score at a Suburban Tertiary Hospital in Nigeria.

Background and objective Pressure injury (PI) is a frequent complication of hospital admissions, and it increases healthcare costs, morbidity, and mortality. This study aimed to use the Braden scale to assess the PI risk among hospitalized patients without PI and determine its association with patient-specific factors. Methods A cross-sectional study was conducted at a suburban tertiary hospital involving a total of 211 hospitalized patients recruited during the study period (October 2022).

Background: Androgenetic alopecia (AGA) has been linked to cardiovascular diseases (CVDs) and metabolic syndrome (MetS). Works on AGA, cardiovascular risk factors (CVRFs) and MetS are rare among Nigerians.

The workforce of the medical specialty of Rehabilitation Medicine (RM) in the UK is 10 times less than the European average for the specialty of Physical and Rehabilitation Medicine (PRM). This can be explained partly by the difference in the scope of practice within the specialty between the UK and other European countries and USA. This opinion paper aims to compare the rehabilitation needs in chronic medical conditions and compare the scope of practice between countries within Europe and other regions of the world.

The negative impact of COVID-19 on working memory revealed using a rapid online quiz.

Although coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) affects the respiratory system, it can also have neurological consequences leading to cognitive deficits such as memory problems. The aim of our study was to assess the impact of COVID-19 on working memory function. We developed and implemented an online anonymous survey with a working memory quiz incorporating aspects of gamification to engage participants.

Incidental blast injuries to the hands of hunters in suburban Africa.

Background: Civilian blast injuries are common during celebrations and festivities. In the intervening times, civilian nonterrorist blast events are rare. The aim of this report is to highlight the increasing occurrence of blast injuries to the dominant right hand of hunters and the ensuing crippling consequences.

A risk stratification model for toxicities in phase 1 immunotherapy trials.

Introduction: Despite the increased number of novel immunotherapy (IO) agents under current development, their toxicity profile remains to be fully elucidated.

Methods: An IO risk stratification model was developed based on 5 different variables: treatment-related deaths; rate of grade ≥3 treatment-related adverse events or treatment-emergent adverse events; grade ≥2 encephalopathy or central nervous system toxicity; grade ≥2 cytokine release syndrome; and the number and type of dose-limiting toxicity. Phase 1 IO trials published from January 2014 to December 2020 were reviewed and categorised based on our risk stratification model into three categories: low-, intermediate- and high-risk.
