A 76-year-old female with severe symptomatic aortic stenosis underwent cardiac CT angiography imaging. Severe calcification of the ascending aorta (porcelain aorta) (Figures 1A and 1B) precluded surgical aortic valve replacement. The aortic annular area, perimeter, and diameter were 372 mm2, 68.

Background: Perioperative bleeding remains an important complication of cardiac surgery. Current guidelines support goal-directed use of coagulation factor concentrates in refractory bleeding, but the optimal strategy is unclear. Four-factor prothrombin complex concentrate (4F-PCC) has theoretical advantages over recombinant activated factor VII (rFVIIa) because of expanded mechanistic targets and lower rates of adverse events, but comparative data are limited.

It describes strongly correlated phases of interacting quantum particles confined in lattice potentials. For bosons, the Hubbard Hamiltonian has been deeply scrutinized for short-range on-site interactions.

We report a case regarding bullet embolization to the distal aorta following entry into the right superior pulmonary vein as a result of a gunshot wound to the posterior chest. The patient presented with signs of lower extremity ischemia.

These patients can be treated by eather open or endovascular approach, depending on several factors, including aneurysm morphologic suitability for endovascular tretament, age of patient, and comorbidities. The main challange with open repair approach is to maintain renal transplant perfusion during the aortic cross clamping.

Structurally, twisting leads to large periodic supercell structures, which in turn can support intriguing strongly correlated behavior. Here, we propose a highly tunable scheme to synthetically emulate twisted bilayer systems with ultracold atoms trapped in an optical lattice.

Water is often considered as the highest performance working fluid for liquid-vapor phase change due to its high thermal conductivity and large enthalpy of vaporization. However, a wide range of industrial systems require using low surface tension liquids where heat transfer enhancement has proved challenging for boiling and evaporation. Here, we enable a new paradigm of phase change heat transfer, which favors high volatility, low surface tension liquids rather than water.

High power density electronics are severely limited by current thermal management solutions which are unable to dissipate the necessary heat flux while maintaining safe junction temperatures for reliable operation. We designed, fabricated, and experimentally characterized a microfluidic device for ultra-high heat flux dissipation using evaporation from a nanoporous silicon membrane. With ~100 nm diameter pores, the membrane can generate high capillary pressure even with low surface tension fluids such as pentane and R245fa.

This study has been conducted in order to compare the quality of life of patients who had isolated anterior cruciate ligament tear and of those who suffered from anassociated meniscal injury.
Material And Methods: This study included 185 patients who had undergone reconstruction of the anterior cruciate ligament at the Department of Orthopedic Surgery and Traumatology in Novi Sad from January lst, 2012 to December 31st 2012.
Introduction: As the Syrian civil war continues, medical care of the injured remains a priority for health facilities receiving casualties. Ziv Medical Centre, the closest hospital in Israel to the Syrian border, has received 500 casualties since February 2013. Seventeen of these patients had vascular injuries.

The aim of this research was to compare the quality of life of patients with lower extremity amputation and people without amputation taking into account gender differences as well as the amputation level.
Material And Methods: The study was designed as a cross-sectional study which included 56 subjects.
Human carotid atherosclerotic plaque is in direct contact with circulatory blood components. Thus, plaque and blood components may affect each other. The current study presents the effects of plaque chloroform:methanol (C:M) extract on the HDL-associated enzyme paraoxnase 1 (PON1).

This case presents some graphic images of the realities of war. Care in the most advanced units cannot restore broken limbs, let alone broken lives.

Objective: Up to 90% of embolic strokes that occur in patients with atrial fibrillation originate from the left atrial appendage. Exclusion of the left atrial appendage during cardiac surgery may decrease the future risk of stroke, especially in patients with atrial fibrillation or at high risk for developing atrial fibrillation. We report the initial results of a multicenter Food and Drug Administration trial to assess the safety and efficacy of a novel left atrial appendage exclusion clip.

There is increasing evidence that this association could be more than just coincidental. We report on the case of a 34-year-old male diagnosed with adult-onset Still's disease and successfully treated with intravenous glucocorticoids.

This prospective clinical trial involved 208 non-diabetic patients with normal glucose tolerance, who underwent major surgical procedures and needed 24 hours ICU monitoring postoperatively. Patients were randomly given 5% glucose solution (1000 mL) one day before surgery or after overnight fasting.

In the initial state, with no voltage applied, these surfaces exhibit contact angles as high as 150 degrees for a wide variety of liquids with surface tensions ranging from 21.8 mN/m (ethanol) to 72.

Droplet behavior can be reversibly switched between the superhydrophobic Cassie-Baxter state and the hydrophilic Wenzel state by the application of electrical voltage and current. The nature of the reversibility mechanism was studied both experimentally and theoretically.
View Article and Find Full Text PDFThe interface shape separating a gas layer within a superhydrophobic surface consisting of a square lattice of posts from a pressurized liquid above the surface is computed numerically. The interface shape is described by a constant mean curvature surface that satisfies the Young-Laplace equation with the three-phase gas-liquid-solid contact line assumed pinned at the post outer edge. The numerical method predicts the existence of constant mean curvature solutions from the planar, zero curvature solution up to a maximum curvature that is dependent on the post shape, size and pitch.

Magnetic resonance-guided focused ultrasound surgery (MRgFUS) uses focused ultrasonic energy to create a heat coagulation lesion, which can be achieved in a totally controlled, very accurate manner (<1 mm). The aim of this study was to evaluate the safety and accuracy of non-invasive focal ablation of liver tissue achieved by consecutive MRgFUS sonications.

The radius and depth were measured in the classical way, while cartilaginous surface area was measured using small fragments of measuring paper to avoid errors in measurement due to the curvature of the surface.

The research was carried out on 20 fresh and conserved anatomical specimens of the lower leg on which X-ray, computed tomography, ultrasonography and stress analysis were performed before and after the lesion of ligaments. Also the gait of 130 adults without (100) and with ligament and joint capsule lesion (30) was analyzed by infrared telemetry.
