Background: To intraindividually compare the diagnostic performance of positron emission computed tomography (F-18-FDG-PET/CT) and diffusion-weighted magnetic resonance imaging (DW-MRI) in a non-inferiority design for the discrimination of peripheral nerve sheath tumours as benign (BPNST), atypical (ANF), or malignant (MPNST) in patients with neurofibromatosis type 1 (NF1).

Results: In this prospective single-centre study, thirty-four NF1 patients (18 male; 30 ± 11 years) underwent F-18-FDG-PET/CT and multi-b-value DW-MRI (11 b-values 0 - 800 s/mm²) at 3T. Sixty-six lesions corresponding to 39 BPNST, 11 ANF, and 16 MPNST were evaluated.

Background: Neurofibromatosis type 1 (NF1) is associated with the development of benign (BPNST) and malignant (MPNST) peripheral nerve sheath tumors. Recently described atypical neurofibromas (ANF) are considered pre-malignant precursor lesions to MPNSTs. Previous studies indicate that diffusion-weighted magnetic resonance imaging (DW-MRI) can reliably discriminate MPNSTs from BPNSTs.

Gastrointestinal bleeding, as a potentially life-threatening condition, is typically diagnosed by radiation-based imaging modalities like computed tomography or more invasively catheter-based angiography. Endoscopy enables examination of the upper gastrointestinal tract and the colon but not of the entire small bowel. Magnetic Particle Imaging (MPI) enables non-invasive, volumetric imaging without ionizing radiation.

Article Synopsis
  • More than 99% of cervical cancers and 40% of vulvar cancers are caused by a virus called HPV, especially types 16 and 18.
  • Scientists are testing a new way to detect tiny bits of HPV DNA in blood to help monitor cancer treatment.
  • They found that the amount of HPV DNA in the blood dropped a lot after treatment, indicating that this method could help doctors see if the treatment is working, especially for more advanced cancer cases.

Sarcopenia, the loss of muscle mass and quality, contributes to worse clinical outcome in patients with end-stage liver disease, but its impact on short- and long-term survival remains insufficiently understood. The aim of this study was to evaluate the development of computed tomography (CT) muscle parameters and their impact on short-term and long-term survival after liver transplantation. This retrospective study included patients with liver transplantation between 2011 and 2015 and a pre-transplant CT scan.

Poor lifestyle leads potentially to chronic diseases and low-grade physical and mental fitness. However, ahead of time, we can measure and analyze multiple aspects of physical and mental health, such as body parameters, health risk factors, degrees of motivation, and the overall willingness to change the current lifestyle. In conjunction with data representing human brain activity, we can obtain and identify human health problems resulting from a long-term lifestyle more precisely and, where appropriate, improve the quality and length of human life.

Cardiovascular disease is a major threat to global public health. Tissue plasminogen activator (TPA) is a serine protease that dissolves blood clots, which can also lead to excessive bleeding. Fibrinogen (FIBR), a glycoprotein, is converted by thrombin to fibrin and then to a fibrin-based blood clot.

Non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) is currently the leading cause of cancer-related death worldwide, and the incidence of brain metastases (BM) in NSCLC patients is continuously increasing. The recent improvements of systemic treatment in NSCLC necessitate continuous updates on prognostic subgroups and factors determining overall survival (OS). In order to improve clinical decision-making in tumor boards, we investigated the clinical determinants affecting survival in patients with resectable NSCLC BM.

Dung beetles are important actors in the self-regulation of ecosystems by driving nutrient cycling, bioturbation, and pest suppression. Urbanization and the sprawl of agricultural areas, however, destroy natural habitats and may threaten dung beetle diversity. In addition, climate change may cause shifts in geographical distribution and community composition.

Soft tissue sarcomas are malignant diseases with a complex classification and various histological subtypes, mostly clinically inconspicuous appearance, and a rare occurrence. To ensure safe patient care, the European Society of Musculoskeletal Radiology (ESSR) issued a guideline for diagnostic imaging of soft tissue tumors in adults in 2015. In this study, we investigated whether implementation of these guidelines resulted in improved MRI protocol and report quality in patients with soft tissue sarcomas in our cancer center.

Vascular interventions are a promising application of Magnetic Particle Imaging enabling a high spatial and temporal resolution without using ionizing radiation. The possibility to visualize the vessels as well as the devices, especially at the same time using multi-contrast approaches, enables a higher accuracy for diagnosis and treatment of vascular diseases. Different techniques to make devices MPI visible have been introduced so far, such as varnish markings or filling of balloons.

Plexiform Neurofibromas (PN) are a common manifestation of the genetic disorder neurofibromatosis type 1 (NF1). These benign nerve sheath tumors often cause significant morbidity, with treatment options limited historically to surgery. There have been tremendous advances over the past two decades in our understanding of PN, and the recent regulatory approvals of the MEK inhibitor selumetinib are reshaping the landscape for PN management.

Background: Patients with neurofibromatosis type 1 (NF1) develop benign (BPNST), premalignant atypical (ANF), and malignant (MPNST) peripheral nerve sheath tumors. Radiological differentiation of these entities is challenging. Therefore, we aimed to evaluate the value of a magnetic resonance imaging (MRI)-based radiomics machine-learning (ML) classifier for differentiation of these three entities of internal peripheral nerve sheath tumors in NF1 patients.

Immune agonist antibodies (IAAs) are promising immunotherapies that target co-stimulatory receptors to induce potent anti-tumor immune responses, particularly when combined with checkpoint inhibitors. Unfortunately, their clinical translation is hampered by serious dose-limiting, immune-mediated toxicities, including high-grade and sometimes fatal liver damage, cytokine release syndrome (CRS), and colitis. We show that the immunotoxicity, induced by the IAAs anti-CD40 and anti-CD137, is dependent on the gut microbiota.

Article Synopsis
  • Personalized medicine seeks to match specific cancer treatments to individual patients based on their tumor characteristics, but current methods only assist less than 10% of patients.
  • A new approach, called single-cell functional precision medicine (scFPM), was tested on 143 patients with aggressive hematologic cancers, where 39% received treatments guided by scFPM results.
  • Results showed that 54% of patients treated according to scFPM experienced improved progression-free survival, with some achieving exceptional responses lasting three times longer than typical, indicating the method's clinical feasibility and effectiveness.

Neurofibromatosis Type 1 (NF1) has been reported to be associated with a variety of spinal abnormalities. The purpose of this study was to quantify the prevalence of spinal abnormalities in a collective of NF1 patients that is representative for the general NF1 population, to associate the co-appearance of spinal abnormalities with both NF1 and clinical symptoms and to investigate if different mutations of the NF1 gene affect the prevalence of these abnormalities. Retrospectively, 275 patients with NF1 and an age- and sex-matched collective of 262 patients were analyzed.

Even though work engagement is a popular construct in organizational psychology, the question remains whether it is experienced as a global construct, or as its three components (vigor, dedication, absorption). The present study thus contributes to the ongoing scientific debate about the dimensionality of work engagement systematically compared one-factor, first-order, higher-order, and bifactor confirmatory factor analytic (CFA) representations of work engagement measured by the short version of Utrecht Work Engagement Scale (UWES-9). We also documented the validity evidence of the most optimal representation based on its test-criterion relationship with basic psychological need fulfillment at work, turnover intentions, work addiction, and work satisfaction.
