Just-in-Time In Situ Simulation Training as a Preparedness Measure for the Perioperative Care of COVID-19 Patients.

Introduction: Routine workflows were redesigned during the first surge of the COVID-19 pandemic to standardize perioperative management of patients and minimize the risk of viral exposure and transmission to staff members. Just-in-time (JIT), in situ simulation training was adopted to implement urgent change, the value of which in a public health crisis has not previously been explored.

Methods: Implementation of workflow changes in the setting of the COVID-19 pandemic was accomplished through JIT, in situ simulation training, delivered over a period of 3 weeks to participants from anesthesia, nursing, and surgery, within our healthcare network.

Quantum Tunneling-Induced Membrane Depolarization Can Explain the Cellular Effects Mediated by Lithium: Mathematical Modeling and Hypothesis.

Lithium imposes several cellular effects allegedly through multiple physiological mechanisms. Membrane depolarization is a potential unifying concept of these mechanisms. Multiple inherent imperfections of classical electrophysiology limit its ability to fully explain the depolarizing effect of lithium ions; these include incapacity to explain the high resting permeability of lithium ions, the degree of depolarization with extracellular lithium concentration, depolarization at low therapeutic concentration, or the differences between the two lithium isotopes Li-6 and Li-7 in terms of depolarization.

The association of nitrous oxide on length of stay in the postanesthesia care unit: a retrospective observational study.

Purpose: To assess whether intraoperative use of nitrous oxide (NO) as an adjunct to general anesthesia is associated with a shorter length of stay in the postanesthesia care unit (PACU).

Methods: We analyzed data from adult patients who underwent non-cardiothoracic surgery under general anesthesia between May 2008 and December 2018. We assessed the association between intraoperative low- and high-dose NO and PACU length of stay.

Association between preoperative administration of gabapentinoids and 30-day hospital readmission: A retrospective hospital registry study.

Acute Macroglossia Post Craniotomy in Sitting Position: A Case Report and Proposed Management Guideline.

Background: Macroglossia is a rare life-threatening postoperative complication in patients undergoing neurosurgical operations in a sitting position. It is difficult to identify the cause of macroglossia, which can be considered multifactorial in most patients.

Case Presentation: We herein present a case of a 37-year-old female patient who was known to have a posterior occipital lesion (low-grade glioma with pilocytic features) and underwent occipital craniectomy followed by supratentorial approach for debulking of the tumor under general anesthesia in a sitting position.

Relief of Secondary Headaches with High Thoracic Erector Spinae Plane Block.

Intractable headaches can be debilitating, often leading to significant distress, prolonged medical treatment, and unanticipated hospital admissions. There have been significant advances in the treatment of primary intractable headaches such as migraines, tension headaches, and cluster headaches beyond medical management. Treatments may now include interventional strategies such as trigger-point injections, peripheral nerve stimulators, or peripheral nerve and ganglion blocks.

Reasons for operation cancellations at a teaching hospital: prioritizing areas of improvement.

Purpose: To report rates of and reasons for operation cancellation, and to prioritize areas of improvement.

Methods: Retrospective data were extracted from the monthly reports of cancelled listed operations. Data on 14 theatres were collected by the office of quality assurance at Jordan University Hospital from August 2012 to April 2016.

ANESTHESIA FOR CHARCOT-MARIE-TOOTH DISEASE: CASE REPORT.

Charcot-Marie-Tooth disease comprises a group of disorders characterized by progressive muscle weakness and wasting. Reviewing the anaesthetic literature produced conflicting reports about the best anaesthetic options for patients with CMTD; as they are at increased risk of prolonged response to muscle relaxants, malignant hyperthermia and risks of regional anaesthesia. We present a case of the successful use of total intravenous anaesthesia with dexmedetomidine and propofol combined with caudal block using bupivacaine mixed with dexmedetomidine without any complications, for a 17 year old male patient with Charcot Marie-Tooth disease who underwent a lower limb orthopedic surgery.
