Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAH) are semi-volatile, lipophilic, and harmful compounds that can persist for decades in a range of marine environments. There are several marine and soil microorganisms that possess enzymes involved in arene degradation. Here, we analyzed the structure (16S rRNA amplicons) and metabolic potential (inferred using phylogenetic placement) of the bacterial community in surface marine sediments from coastal waters off Concepción, Chile, and describe how microbial community patterns are shaped and altered by PAH contamination.

This study presents the first documented occurrence of a natural crude oil seep plume associated with river discharge along the Strait of Magellan in southern Patagonia in modern times. Between September and December 2022, hydrocarbon signals were detected using a crude oil sensor integrated into a FerryBox system that traversed the Strait of Magellan and several channels of southern Patagonia, covering approximately 510 km. The highest levels of crude oil signals were observed in the mid-basin of the Strait of Magellan.

This study examines the mercury content in the marine matrices water column, surface sediment and benthic invertebrates of Coronel and Coliumo bays, central Chile, under winter and summer conditions. Coronel Bay has been subject to intense industrialization in the last three decades, while Coliumo Bay remains as a fisherman's cove and a popular summer tourism destination. Our results reveal significantly higher mercury concentrations in the three environmental matrices analyzed for Coronel Bay, while Coliumo Bay exhibits levels within the range considered natural.

This study examines metal concentrations in sediments under the influence of the oxygen minimum zone of the SE-Pacific and the anthropogenic impact following industrialization in Caldera Bay (27° S), which is one of the main ore-loading ports in operation from 1849. Pb and the CRS dating method were employed to estimate the age in two sediment cores sectioned at 1 cm. Metal concentrations from selected samples suggested clear impacts of industrial activities after ∼1860 on Cu, and moderate impacts on Fe, Pb, and Zn.

To achieve a suitable packaging configuration, it is important first to determine the physicochemical characteristics related to the packaged product. In this study, the physicochemical characterization of fresh purple passion fruits of three different ripening stages was carried out to determine key variables for the packaging, such as O consumption and CO -ethylene production rates. Subsequently, intermediate-ripe fruits were packaged for 21 days at 6 °C under three packaging conditions: Xtend perforated bags, low-density polyethylene (LDPE) bags, and LDPE bags with a novel ethylene scavenger active additive (ESAA).

In this paper, we demonstrate through examples how the concept of a Semantic Web based knowledge graph can be used to integrate combustion modeling into cross-disciplinary applications and in particular how inconsistency issues in chemical mechanisms can be addressed. We discuss the advantages of linked data that form the essence of a knowledge graph and how we implement this in a number of interconnected ontologies, specifically in the context of combustion chemistry. Central to this is OntoKin, an ontology we have developed for capturing both the content and the semantics of chemical kinetic reaction mechanisms.

This paper reports long-term concentration records of metals and organic halogenated compounds in tissues of 49 species of marine organisms from Eastern South Pacific coast, Biobio region, Chile during a marine monitoring program developed between 2006 and 2015. Principal component (PCA) and generalized linear model (GLM) analyses indicated significant differences in the concentrations of metals and organic halogenated compounds among taxonomic and functional groups. The strongest relationships exist between species that share similar feeding habits rather than between species of the same taxonomic group or habitat.

A new method is presented for performing the Abel inversion by fitting the line-of-sight projection of a predefined intensity distribution (FLiPPID) to the recorded 2D projections. The aim is to develop a methodology that is less prone to experimental noise when analyzing the projection of axisymmetric objects-in this case, co-flow diffusion flame images for color ratio pyrometry. Globally, Chile is the second largest producer of mussels, with 99% of production concentrated in the inland sea of the Los Lagos Region, Southern Chile. This study reveals that seasons produce a drastic difference in the cadmium concentration (Cd) in marine mussels in bay, channel, and fjord ecosystems in this area. As the global mussel industry continues its rapid expansion, a complete understanding of cadmium pathways is critical in order to minimize the cadmium content in harvests.

Polychlorinated dibenzo-p-dioxins (PCDD) and polychlorinated dibenzo-p-furans (PCDF) are widely distributed in the environment. The diverse production processes that form these compounds lead to a range of chemical signatures although weathering may cause changes to these signature over time and with increasing distance from their origin.
