Background: Residents of facilities for older people are vulnerable to COVID-19 outbreaks. Nevertheless, timely recognition of outbreaks at facilities for older people at public health centers has been impossible in Japan since May 8, 2023, when the Japanese government discontinued aggressive countermeasures against COVID-19 because of the waning severity of the dominant Omicron strain. The Facility for Elderly Surveillance System (FESSy) has been developed to improve information collection.

However, synchronous primary bilateral ovarian cancer (SBOC), comprising two different histological types of ovarian cancer, is extremely rare, with limited reports on its clinical course and prognosis. Herein, we report the case of a 56-year-old postmenopausal Japanese woman with stage IVB SBOC with combined left ovarian clear cell and right ovarian mucinous carcinomas.

Fear of cancer recurrence (FCR) is a common and distressing condition among adolescents and young adults (AYAs). This study aims to investigate the efficacy of digital interventions, including distress screening-based information provision and smartphone problem-solving therapy, on common psychological distress, especially FCR, in AYA patients with cancer. Participants will be 224 AYA outpatients with cancer aged 15-39 years who will be randomly assigned to either an 8-week smartphone-based intervention or a waitlist control group.

Isotropy of Cosmic Rays beyond 10^{20} eV Favors Their Heavy Mass Composition.

We report an estimation of the injected mass composition of ultrahigh energy cosmic rays (UHECRs) at energies higher than 10 EeV. The composition is inferred from an energy-dependent sky distribution of UHECR events observed by the Telescope Array surface detector by comparing it to the Large Scale Structure of the local Universe. In the case of negligible extragalactic magnetic fields (EGMFs), the results are consistent with a relatively heavy injected composition at E∼10  EeV that becomes lighter up to E∼100  EeV, while the composition at E>100  EeV is very heavy.

Effect of Shared Decision-Making on Trust in Physicians in the Management of Systemic Lupus Erythematosus: The Trust Measurement for Physicians and Patients With Systemic Lupus Erythematosus Prospective Cohort Study.

Objective: Few studies have explored whether the involvement of patients in shared decision-making (SDM) is beneficial to the management of systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE). Therefore, this study investigated the relationship between patient participation in SDM and their trust in physicians using data from the Trust Measurement in Physicians and Patients With SLE (TRUMP2-SLE) study.

Methods: Data regarding the nine-item Japanese version of the Shared Decision-Making Questionnaire (SDM-Q-9) scores, Trust in Physician Scale (TIPS) scores, and Abbreviated Wake Forest Physician Trust Scale (A-WFPTS) scores for interpersonal trust in a physician and trust in the medical profession were collected from patients with SLE who visited the outpatient clinics of five facilities in Japan through a self-administered questionnaire.

Methods: This nationwide cross-sectional survey included 10 000 participants aged ≥20 years enrolled through random sampling using a two-stage stratification in 2023.

Construction and evaluation of a neurofeedback system using finger tapping and near-infrared spectroscopy.

Introduction: Neurofeedback using near-infrared spectroscopy (NIRS) has been used in patients with stroke and other patients, but few studies have included older people or patients with cognitive impairment.

Methods: We constructed a NIRS-based neurofeedback system and used finger tapping to investigate whether neurofeedback can be implemented in older adults while finger tapping and whether brain activity improves in older adults and healthy participants. Our simple neurofeedback system was constructed using a portable wearable optical topography (WOT-HS) device.
