Article Synopsis
  • - The study investigates how well conventional MRI can differentiate corticobasal degeneration (CBD) from its mimics due to similar clinical features.
  • - Researchers analyzed the degree of brain atrophy and asymmetry in MRI images of 19 CBD patients and 16 patients with conditions that mimic CBD, like Alzheimer's and progressive supranuclear palsy.
  • - Findings suggest that specific patterns of atrophy and the presence of white matter hyperintensity can be used as imaging biomarkers to help diagnose CBD more accurately.

Article Synopsis
  • Corticobasal degeneration (CBD) presents a diverse clinical picture, making it challenging to predict its underlying pathology, which varies significantly among patients.
  • A study examined 32 patients with confirmed CBD, highlighting that initial symptoms like gait disturbances often appeared quickly, while other issues such as cognitive impairment and dysphagia developed over the following years.
  • The most common underlying pathologies included CBD itself, progressive supranuclear palsy, and Alzheimer's disease, with specific patterns of symptom development observed correlating to these conditions.

Objective: In 2010, we established the Miyazaki Comprehensive Hearing Care Network (MCHCN) for early identification and intervention in children with congenital and late-onset/acquired hearing loss with the cooperation of related administrative bodies in Miyazaki prefecture. The central roles of the MCHCN program are played by the Hearing Care Center (HCC) at the University of Miyazaki Hospital established in 2010 to facilitate audiological diagnoses, hearing aid interventions, and educational efforts, as well as linkage with the Department of Otolaryngology for surgical interventions. Herein, we aimed to present the main outcomes of the MCHCN program organized by the HCC at the University of Miyazaki Hospital.

Adult patients with relapsed/refractory (R/R) B-precursor acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL) have a poor prognosis. Blinatumomab is a bispecific T-cell engager (BiTE) immuno-oncology therapy with dual specificity for CD19 and CD3 that redirects patients' CD3-positive cytotoxic T cells to lyse malignant and normal B cells. We conducted an open-label, phase 1b/2 study to determine the safety, pharmacokinetics, efficacy and recommended dose of blinatumomab in Japanese adults with R/R B-precursor ALL.

CSF1R-expressing tumor-associated macrophages (TAMs) induce a tumor-promoting microenvironment by regulating immunity. Evidence demonstrates that the expression and single nucleotide polymorphisms of relate with survival and risk of lung cancer in never smokers. However, no previous studies have examined the association of CSF1R expression in TAMs with mortality or whether the prognostic association differs according to smoking status in lung adenocarcinoma.

Hitomi X-ray studies of Giant Radio Pulses from the Crab pulsar.

Publ Astron Soc Jpn Nihon Tenmon Gakkai

April 2018

To search for giant X-ray pulses correlated with the giant radio pulses (GRPs) from the Crab pulsar, we performed a simultaneous observation of the Crab pulsar with the X-ray satellite Hitomi in the 2 - 300 keV band and the Kashima NICT radio observatory in the 1.4 - 1.7 GHz band with a net exposure of about 2 ks on 25 March 2016, just before the loss of the Hitomi mission.

Background: Global assessment allows patients to assess improvement in multiple irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) symptoms. However, it was deemed important to assess "clinically meaningful improvements, focusing on the patient's chief complaint and the severity of major IBS symptoms" in addition to global assessment to show how ramosetron is effective for individual IBS symptoms. This is a pilot study to explore clinical endpoints focusing on the chief complaint of patients with IBS with diarrhea (IBS-D).

Background: Previous studies have indicated that ramosetron, a 5-hydroxytryptamine-3 receptor antagonist, achieves global improvement in irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) symptoms in male patients with IBS with diarrhea (IBS-D). However, in addition to global assessment it was deemed important to assess "clinically meaningful improvements, focusing on the patient's chief complaint and the severity of major IBS symptoms". We performed a randomized, placebo-controlled, phase IV pilot study to explore and examine efficacy variables that allow such evaluation of ramosetron in male patients with IBS-D.

Background & Aims: Ramosetron, a serotonin (5-hydroxytryptamine)-3 receptor antagonist with high selectivity, reduced stress-induced diarrhea and defecation caused by corticotropin-releasing hormone in rats. However, there have been no clinical trials of its effect in patients with diarrhea and irritable bowel syndrome (IBS-D). We performed a randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled trial to determine whether ramosetron reduces diarrhea in these patients.

Arsenic compounds that are often found in drinking water increase the risk of developmental brain disorders. In this study, we performed live imaging analyses of Neuro-2a cells expressing SCAT3, a caspase-3 cleavage peptide sequence linking two fluorescent proteins; enhanced cyan fluorescence protein (ECFP) and Venus, to determine whether sodium arsenite (NaAsO(2); 0, 1, 5, or 10 μM) affects both neurite outgrowth and/or induces apoptosis with the same doses and in the same cell cultures. We observed that the area ratio of neurite to cell body in SCAT3-expressing cells was significantly reduced by 5 and 10 μM NaAsO(2), but not by 1 μM, although the emission ratio of ECFP to Venus, an endpoint of caspase-3 activity, was not changed.

Article Synopsis
  • There are two forms of myoglobin that differ by a 180-degree rotation of the heme, designated as major and minor forms.
  • NMR studies have shown that while the heme's electronic structure remains largely unaffected by this rotation, the minor form exhibits a higher exchange rate for a critical proton, indicating a slightly weaker hydrogen bond stability.
  • Additionally, the orientation of the heme influences the rates of autoxidation for oxy-myoglobin and the affinity of met-aquo myoglobin for azide.
