Crown ethers are central to supramolecular chemistry, recognizing and binding specific ions in solution. The most well-known, 18-Crown-6 (18C6), preferentially captures K in an aqueous solution, while gas phase binding of 18C6 with alkali metal ions decreases linearly with an increasing ionic radius. Why the high affinity for Li and Na in the gas phase is dramatically reduced with hydration remains an open question in understanding the K selectivity in the aqueous phase.

Raman-gain-enhanced near-field optomechanical transduction between a movable optical cavity and SiN-membrane resonator is demonstrated. The Raman gain compensates for the intrinsic loss of the cavity and amplifies the optomechanical transduction, through which the membrane vibration is sensed using a high-Q whispering-gallery-mode optical cavity evanescently. The optical Q of the cavity resonance is improved with respect to the optical pump power, which results in an increase in the optomechanically transduced vibration signals of the mechanical resonator.

Chlorogenic acid (CGA) is the most abundant polyphenol in coffee. It has been widely reported to exhibit antioxidant activity by activating nuclear factor erythroid 2-related factor 2 (Nrf2) potentially via the canonical Kelch-like-ECH-associated protein 1 (Keap1)-Nrf2 pathway. Sendai virus (SeV) accessory protein C limits the generation of double-stranded RNAs, defective interfering RNAs, or both, during viral transcription and replication, thereby limiting interferon-β production. Our recent in vitro analyses on murine macrophage cell lines demonstrated that this protein also contributes to restricting macrophage function, including the production of nitric oxide (NO) and inflammatory cytokines in addition to interferon-β, in infected macrophages. This study showed that depletion of airway macrophages by clodronate-loaded liposomes led to the development of severe viral pneumonia in recombinant C gene-knockout SeV (SeV∆C)-infected mice, but did not modulate disease severity in wild-type SeV-infected mice.

Bisphenol A (BPA) is an endocrine-disrupting chemical used in polycarbonate and epoxy resins. Previously, we found that BPA stabilized the protein levels of nuclear factor erythroid 2-related factor 2 (Nrf2) by inducing Ca efflux into the cytosol, followed by nitric oxide synthase activation, resulting in the enhanced nitrosylation of Keap1, which is a negative regulator of Nrf2. Lentiviral vectors are a valuable tool to deliver exogenous genes for stable expression in cells. While much progress has been made in processing lentiviral vector-containing culture medium, it remains to be explored how the production of lentiviral vector from producer cells can be increased. We initially found that co-expression of the SPRY domain-containing SOCS box protein 1 (SPSB1) promotes the production of human immunodeficiency virus type 1 (HIV-1) and lentiviral vector with increased expression of the Gag and envelope proteins and activation of the HIV-1 LTR and CMV promoter.

Mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) are multipotent stem cells localized to the perivascular regions of various organs, including bone marrow (BM). While MSC transplantation represents a promising stem cell-based therapy for ischemic stroke, increasing evidence indicates that exogenously administered MSCs rarely accumulate in the injured central nervous system (CNS). Therefore, compared with MSCs, regionally derived brain multipotent stem cells may be a superior source to elicit regeneration of the CNS following ischemic injury.

Exacerbated by the urban heat island phenomenon, heat events are expected to become more intense and frequent as climate change progresses, though we have limited understanding of the impact of such events on vulnerable populations at a neighborhood or census block group level. This data article describes a sensory evaluation of potatoes used in food processing from the Tokachi, Kamikawa, and Abashiri geographic areas of Hokkaido, Japan, performed by untrained young adults. We gathered sensory data on potatoes from the four cultivars 'Toyoshiro,' 'Kitahime,' 'Snowden,' and 'Poroshiri.' The sensory evaluation was performed on steamed potatoes from each cultivar; these potatoes were harvested from each of the three geographic areas.
