Hybrid Endovascular and Direct Surgical Approach for Treatment of Penetrating Common Carotid Artery Injury: A Case Report.

Although rare, penetrating cervical vascular injury poses significant challenges with a poor patient prognosis, often attributed to severe hemorrhage and accompanying injuries. We encountered a case of hemorrhagic shock resulting from a penetrating injury to the common carotid artery (CCA), which was successfully managed using a combination of endovascular therapy and direct surgical intervention. Blood flow assessment of gastric tube with indocyanine green fluorescence angiography and postoperative endoscopy during esophagectomy: indocyanine green enhancement time indicated congestion.

Background: During esophagectomy, evaluation of blood supply to the gastric tube is critically important to estimate and avoid anastomotic complications. This retrospective study investigated the relationship between indocyanine green (ICG) fluorescence angiography during esophagectomy and postoperative endoscopy findings, especially mucosal color change.

Methods: This study retrospectively collected data from 86 patients who underwent subtotal esophagectomy and reconstruction using a gastric tube for esophageal cancer at the Tokyo Medical and Dental University between 2017 and 2020.

Uncertainty among families of patients with cerebrovascular diseases in Japan: association with quality of life and background characteristics.

Purpose: To determine the relationship between family uncertainty and family quality of life (QOL) during the recovery period of patients with cerebrovascular disease in Japan, and the factors that influence family uncertainty.

Methods: Data were collected from copies of patient medical files and interviews with family members of 85 patients admitted to two rehabilitation wards in Japan. Family uncertainty was measured using the Japanese version of the Managing Uncertainty in Illness Scale-Family Member form (MUIS-FM) and family QOL using the World Health Organization Five Well-Being Index (WHO-5).

Different expressions of cardiac biomarkers between different types of acquired right ventricular outflow tract abnormality in monochorionic twins.

Objective: To investigate the differences in amniotic fluid cardiac biomarkers and clinical features among types of right ventricular outflow tract (RVOT) abnormality in monochorionic (MC) twins.

Method: This prospective study included MC twins that underwent laser surgery. Recipient or larger twins (group A) and donor or smaller twins (group B) were assessed and divided into those with a normal right ventricular outflow tract (normal RVOT), functional pulmonary atresia (fPA), or pulmonary stenosis (PS).

Insulin-like growth factor II-producing colonic carcinoma presenting with non-islet cell tumor hypoglycemia: An autopsy report revealing neuroendocrine differentiation in the metastatic foci and literature review.

Non-islet cell tumor hypoglycemia (NICTH) is a very rare symptom of severe hypoglycemia associated with extrapancreatic tumors. It is considered to be caused by insulin-like growth factor (IGF)-II. There have been no autopsy cases of colorectal carcinoma with NICTH confirmed with both serum high molecular weight and tumoral IGF-II.

Outcomes of fetoscopic laser surgery for twin-to-twin transfusion syndrome between 26 and 27 weeks of gestation in Japan.

Aim: The purpose of this study was to investigate the outcomes of fetoscopic laser photocoagulation (FLP) for twin-to-twin transfusion syndrome (TTTS) in Japan.

Methods: The retrospective cohort study (2012-2018) was conducted in monochorionic twin pregnancies that underwent FLP for TTTS between 26 and 27 weeks from 2012 to 2018. The perioperative data, maternal complications, gestational age (GA) at delivery, neonatal complications, and survival of infants at 28 days of age were analyzed.

Prenatal evaluation of functional pulmonary hypoplasia via fetal magnetic resonance imaging.

Objective: The purpose of this study was to retrospectively examine the use of lung-to-liver signal intensity ratio (LLSIR) on T2-weighted images to predict functional pulmonary hypoplasia.

Methods: The subjects of this study were pregnant women who underwent magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). Patients who required nitric oxide inhalation and those who died from respiratory disorders were classified as having functional pulmonary hypoplasia (FPH).

Cystic Lesion of Dissected Pararectal Lymph Node in a Female Patient With Rectal Carcinoma: A Rare Pattern of Nodal Metastasis Mimicking a Serous Inclusion Cyst.

Nodal metastatic foci of colorectal carcinoma are usually solid nodules. Serous inclusions are occasionally found in lymph nodes, particularly in female patients, and they occasionally form cysts. Biochemical effects of intraoperative cell salvage and autotransfusion during cesarean section: A prospective pilot study.

Aim: Intraoperative cell salvage and autotransfusion (ICSA) is a useful technique for women undergoing cesarean sections who are predicted to experience significant bleeding. This method can reduce allogeneic transfusions as well as its associated risks and costs. Amniotic fluid embolism (AFE) is an abnormal maternal response to ICSA similar to the classic systemic inflammatory response syndrome, but its mechanism is not well understood.

Intraoperative transcranial facial motor evoked potential monitoring in surgery of cerebellopontine angle tumors predicts early and late postoperative facial nerve function.

Objective: We propose a novel method that predicts facial nerve function (FNF) calculated from the drop and recovery of facial motor evoked potential (FMEP) amplitude ratio during the surgery of cerebellopontine angle tumors.

Methods: We enrolled 73 patients with cerebellopontine angle tumor, and used a biphasic, constant current, and suprathreshold stimulation (BCS) protocol to record FMEP of the orbicularis oris. This study aimed to determine changes in circulating myomesin 3 fragments as a novel biomarker for exercise-induced muscle damage. Nine healthy males performed 10 sets of 40 repetitions of one-leg calf-raise exercise by the load corresponding to the half of their body weight.

Measurement of fetal automated fractional shortening using two-dimensional tracking in multiple centers.

Prediction of Twin-to-Twin Transfusion Syndrome Using Characteristic Waveforms of Ductus Venosus in Recipient Twins.

We aimed to investigate whether the alterations of time intervals and velocity-time integrals (VTIs) of ductus venosus (DV) Doppler flow could predict evolving twin-to-twin transfusion syndrome (TTTS) in monochorionic diamniotic (MD) twin pregnancies in the second trimester. DV Doppler waveforms of MD twin pregnancies were retrospectively analyzed. Time intervals and VTIs of the accelerating phase of S-wave (S1 and VTI-1), decelerating phase of S-wave (S2 and VTI-2) and phase of D-wave (D and VTI-diast) were measured in the recipient twins of TTTS and the larger twins of uncomplicated MD twins.

A novel needle electrode for intraoperative fourth cranial nerve neurophysiological mapping.

The compound muscle action potential (CMAP) of CN-IV cannot be recorded because of the low mapping sensitivity and anatomical characteristics of the superior oblique muscle (SOM). [A Surgical Case of Desmoid Tumor in the Transverse Mesocolon with Pancreatic Invasion].

A 40-year-old man with no previous history of abdominal surgery or noteworthy family history presented to our hospital because of a palpable abdominal mass. [Repair of Spontaneous Cerebrospinal Fluid Leakage due to Multiple Defects in the Skull Base:A Case Report].

Spontaneous cerebrospinal fluid(CSF)rhinorrhea may have multiple leakage sites, and occasionally, may become difficult to manage. A 46-year-old man was admitted to our hospital presenting with bacterial meningitis that occurred after CSF rhinorrhea. The CSF leak had stopped following conservative medical treatment;however, it recurred immediately.

Bevacizumab Therapy of Neurofibromatosis Type 2 Associated Vestibular Schwannoma in Japanese Patients.

We conducted a feasibility study to investigate the therapeutic effect of bevacizumab on vestibular schwannomas (VS) associated with neurofibromatosis type 2 (NF2) in a sample of Japanese patients. Ten NF2 patients were selected between 2013 and 2018: nine women and one man, with ages ranging from 12 to 45 years (mean: 29.4).
