Introduction: Ependymomas are neuroepithelial neoplasms of the central nervous system that arise from the precursor cells lining the ventricular system and the central canal of the spinal cord. Herein, we report a case of an extremely rare type of ependymoma arising from the thigh. Then, a literature review was performed.

Aim: This study examined the oral status and the presence of teeth requiring treatment among older adults receiving home medical care.

Methods: This cross-sectional study was conducted at a Japanese dental clinic specializing in geriatric treatment. We recruited older adults receiving home medical care in the community who had begun to receive domiciliary dental care.

Introduction And Importance: Myopericytomas are tumors originating from perivascular myoid cells and exhibiting a wide range of histologic growth patterns. They rarely occur in bones, and no case of myopericytoma in the patella has been reported so far.

Background/aim: Wide resection is usually performed for malignant bone and soft tissue tumors, but there is often functional impairment of the affected limb. In this study, we performed virotherapy with the vesicular stomatitis virus (VSV) and photothermal therapy using carbon nanotubes (CNTs) in combination for osteosarcoma, followed by marginal excision. The possibility of local treatment of the primary tumor was then assessed.

Introduction And Importance: Patellar bone tumors are very rare, and most are benign or of intermediate type. In this report, we describe our experience of a metastatic patellar bone tumor caused by gastric cancer, which resembled a very rare primary or secondary aneurysmal bone cyst and review the literature.

Case Presentation: A 65-year-old man presented with severe pain in the patellar region and marked limitation of the knee joint range of motion.

Oncolytic Effect of a Recombinant Vesicular Stomatitis Virus Encoding a Tumor-suppressor MicroRNA in an Osteosarcoma Mouse Model.

Background/aim: Attempts have been made to enhance treatment with vesicular stomatitis virus (VSV) for osteosarcoma. We have previously shown that VSV incorporated with miRNA143 enhanced the antitumor effect at some doses; however, the range of the doses was narrow. This has not been evaluated in vivo, and the synergistic effect of this antitumor effect in animals is unknown.

Usefulness of Telemedicine for Disabled Children Receiving Feeding Therapy.

We performed a retrospective cohort study using medical records of 374 pediatric patients who visited a university dental clinic specializing in dysphagia rehabilitation in Japan between 2019 and 2020 to clarify the usefulness of telemedicine among disabled children receiving feeding therapy. The primary outcome was the feeding developmental stage confirmed at the final evaluation. Propensity score matching was performed between individuals in two treatment groups (in-person and telemedicine) before the final analysis using patients' age, sex, primary disease, gross motor function, and feeding developmental stage as covariates.

New special approach for shoulder stability after Malawer type IVB shoulder girdle resection: A case report.

Introduction And Importance: Scapular prostheses are useful in shoulder stability after shoulder girdle resection for malignant bone tumors; however, they are difficult to obtain in Japan. Therefore, other methods must be considered, depending on the extent of resection. We report a case in which a clavicle-locking plate, Nesplon tape, and a proximal humeral prosthesis were used to ensure shoulder stability and preserve stable upper limb function.

Incomplete Atypical Femoral Fracture Treated by Prophylactic Intramedullary Nail Fixation: A Case Series.

Long-term bisphosphonate use may be associated with atypical femoral fractures. In this report, we describe three cases of bisphosphonate-associated incomplete atypical femoral fracture, treated by prophylactic intramedullary nail fixation. Patients with long-term intake of bisphosphonates must be carefully monitored; atypical femoral fracture should be suspected in the presence of symptoms such as thigh pain.

Giant cell tumor of the cervical spine treated by carbon ion radiotherapy: A case report.

Introduction: Giant cell tumor (GCT) of the bone is a benign-malignant intermediate tumor with locally destructive growth and a relatively high local recurrence rate. Neurological symptoms may develop in patients with GCT of the spine, and surgical treatment is prioritized in cases where resection is possible. However, the local recurrence rate of GCT of the bone is higher than that of GCT at other sites owing to the associated surgical challenges, and treatment is often difficult.

Tuberculosis of the knee masquerading as pigmented villonodular synovitis: Report of two cases.

Introduction And Importance: The manifestation of tuberculous mimicry is challenging to diagnose, especially in extrapulmonary Tuberculosis (TB). Pigmented villonodular synovitis (PVNS) may mimic tuberculous arthritis of the knee joint. In young, otherwise healthy-appearing individuals, tuberculous arthritis and PVNS in the knee joint could present as monoarticular involvement, with painful swelling of extended duration and limited movement.

Extraskeletal Ewing sarcoma attached to the ulnar nerve: A case report.

Introduction: Extraskeletal Ewing sarcoma (EES) of the extremity is uncommon, and only a small number of reported cases have been devoted to the upper-extremity.

Presentation Of Case: A 65-year-old woman presented with a recurrent EES, a highly malignant tumor, involving the ulnar nerve at the right elbow region which was initially suspected as a benign soft tissue tumor, schwannoma, thus marginal excision had been performed. Due to its malignant behaviour, we treated the recurrent lesion with wide excision and reconstruction combined with chemotherapy.

Utility of intraoperative magnetic resonance imaging for giant cell tumor of bone after denosumab treatment: a pilot study.

Background: Giant cell tumor of bone (GCTB) is an intermediate but locally aggressive neoplasm. Current treatment of high-risk GCTB involves administration of denosumab, which inhibits bone destruction and promotes osteosclerosis. However, denosumab monotherapy is not a curative treatment for GCTB and surgical treatment remains required.

Development of an Oncolytic Recombinant Vesicular Stomatitis Virus Encoding a Tumor-suppressor MicroRNA.

Background: Attempts have been made to enhance systemic therapy for osteosarcoma. In our previous study, the systemic administration of a vesicular stomatitis virus (VSV) improved the survival rates of mice with osteosarcoma but did not improve the long-term survival of the animals.

Materials And Methods: In the present study, we developed a novel oncolytic VSV by incorporating tumor-suppressor microRNA143 (rVSV-miR143) to compare the antitumor effects of various doses (10×10, 5×10, and 1×10 multiplicity of infection) of rVSV-miR143 with those of VSV in vitro.

Rapidly growing Fibro-osseous pseudotumor of the digit: A case report.

Introduction: Fibro-osseous pseudotumor of the digit is a rare benign lesion of subcutaneous tissue that typically arises in the parabone site of the proximal phalanx in young adult females. The lesion is histopathologically characterized by fibroblastic proliferation and osteoid formation. Good prognosis following complete surgical excision of the tumor has been reported, with a very low recurrence rate and no reports of malignant transformation.

[Survey on healthcare provider awareness of cosmetic therapy for older adults of in-and-out geriatric hospital departments].

Aim: This study aimed to determine the perceptions among healthcare providers of the clinical need for cosmetic therapy among older adults.

Methods: A questionnaire was distributed to 190 medical staff regarding their perceptions of cosmetic therapy for older adults. The survey included questions on occupation, sex, age, cosmetic therapy in older adults, and acceptable cosmetic treatments.

Coexistence of giant cell tumor of tendon sheath and enchondroma in the middle phalanx of the little finger mimicking a malignant tumor: A case report.

Giant cell tumor of the tendon sheath is a type of slow-growing benign soft tissue tumor that typically arises from the synovium of the tendon sheath. Enchondroma is a benign bone tumor comprising of mature hyaline cartilage that centrally develops within the tubular bone. While giant cell tumor of the tendon sheath or enchondroma are common benign soft tissue and bone tumors, respectively the simultaneous occurrence of these tumors in the same region of the hand is exceedingly rare, and it can mimic a malignant tumor, thereby making the diagnosis more challenging.

Background: Although surgical biopsy has historically been considered to be the standard diagnostic biopsy for soft tissue and bone sarcomas, recent literature suggests that percutaneous core needle biopsy yields similar results. Therefore, an evaluation of the exact diagnostic accuracy and associated influential variables of core needle biopsy that is based on a large data set would be useful.

Methods: We searched MEDLINE, Web of Science, and EMBASE to identify core needle biopsy studies for predicting final histological subtypes of musculoskeletal lesions.
