Laparoscopic-assisted versus open complete mesocolic excision and central vascular ligation for right-sided colon cancer.

Background: A concept of complete mesocolic excision (CME) and central vascular ligation for colonic cancer has been recently introduced. The aim of this study was to evaluate and compare perioperative and oncologic outcomes after laparoscopic-assisted CME (LCME) and open CME (OCME) for right-sided colon cancers.

Methods: The study group included 128 patients who underwent an LCME and 137 patients who underwent an OCME for right-sided colon cancer between June 2006 and December 2008.

Robotic versus laparoscopic surgery for mid-low rectal cancer after neoadjuvant chemoradiation therapy: comparison of oncologic outcomes.

Purpose: Minimal invasive surgery for mid and low rectal cancer after neoadjuvant long-course chemoradiotherapy (LCRT) can be challenging. The aim of our study was to compare outcomes of laparoscopic and robotic resections in mid and low rectal cancers after LCRT.

Methods: Between Jan 2006 and Dec 2010, all patients who underwent robotic or laparoscopic resections for mid and low rectal cancers after LCRT were identified from a prospective database.

Short-term outcomes of laparoscopic colorectal resection in patients with previous abdominal operations.

Background: Laparoscopic colorectal procedures (LCPs) are technically demanding; previous abdominal surgery may add to their complexity. The aim of our study was to assess the effect of previous abdominal surgery (PAS) on laparoscopic colorectal surgery.

Subjects And Methods: A prospective database was used to record LCPs between 2001 and 2011.

Internal herniation following laparoscopic left hemicolectomy: an underreported event.

Purpose: Laparoscopic colorectal surgery creates fewer adhesions compared with open colorectal resection. Small bowel obstruction after laparoscopic colorectal resection may be caused by internal herniation of the small bowel through a colomesenteric defect, probably related to a lack of adhesion formation. This is seen especially after left colonic resections.

Transanal division of the anorectal junction followed by laparoscopic low anterior resection and coloanal pouch anastomosis: A technique facilitated by a balloon port.

We performed a laparoscopic ultra low anterior resection in two patients with low rectal cancers (3 cm from dentate line). A transanal division and continuous suture closure of anorectal junction was performed first followed by laparoscopic low anterior resection. A handsewn anastomosis between colonic pouch/transverse coloplasty and anal canal was facilitated by use of a transanal balloon port.

Laparoscopic drainage of retroperitoneal abscess secondary to pyogenic sacroiliitis.

Retroperitoneal abscesses are rare complications of pyogenic sacroiliitis. Diagnosis is often delayed due to the initial non-specific symptoms and signs and also a low awareness of the clinical presentation and diagnostic procedures among clinicians. We describe a case of an 18-year-old man who was diagnosed with septic arthritis of his left sacro-iliac joint which was complicated by a retroperitoneal abscess.

Benign metastasizing meningioma.

Meningiomas represent about one sixth of all primary neoplasms of the central nervous system. They rarely metastasize outside the intracranial compartment. There are no clear criteria to identify the subset of aggressive tumors which recur locally or metastasize.
