Investigating fundamentalist trends in the Orthodox Church of Greece: Balancing between traditionalism and fundamentalism.

The purpose of this article is to investigate trends and variations of fundamentalism in the Orthodox Church of Greece. In order to achieve this, the article analyses discourses and practices of the Orthodox Church of Greece since the restoration of democracy in 1974. The main argument is that the church, as an institution, produces public discourses and adopts practices with regard to modernity, more specifically on social, political, moral and scientific issues, using both modernity and tradition in order to strengthen its place in Greek society.

A Partially Hydrolyzed Whey Infant Formula Supports Appropriate Growth: A Randomized Controlled Non-Inferiority Trial.

The aim of the current study was to investigate the effects of a partially hydrolyzed whey infant formula (PHF) on growth in healthy term infants as compared to a standard infant formula with intact protein (IPF). In a double-blind, non-inferiority, randomized controlled trial, a total of 163 healthy formula-fed infants, 55-80 days old, were recruited and randomly allocated to either the PHF (test) or the IPF (control) group. They were followed up for three months during which they were evaluated monthly on growth and development.

Ankle fractures in diabetic patients.

Surgical complications are more common in patients with complicated diabetes (presence of inner organ failure, neuropathy).Of all patients undergoing ankle fracture fixation, approximately 13% are diabetic and 2% have complicated diabetes mellitus.Non-operative management of ankle fractures in patients with complicated diabetes results in an even higher rate of complications.

Food Allergy in Adults: Substantial Variation in Prevalence and Causative Foods Across Europe.

Background: According to the community-based EuroPrevall surveys, prevalence of self-reported food allergy (FA) in adults across Europe ranges from 2% to 37% for any food and 1% to 19% for 24 selected foods.

Objective: To determine the prevalence of probable FA (symptoms plus specific IgE-sensitization) and challenge-confirmed FA in European adults, along with symptoms and causative foods.

Methods: In phase I of the EuroPrevall project, a screening questionnaire was sent to a random sample of the general adult population in 8 European centers.

Cephalopods are highly appreciated with increasing demand seafood, but are also very perishable and deteriorate fast mainly due to microbiological spoilage. For this reason exploration of bacterial communities through 16S Next Generation Sequencing (NGS) and Volatile Organic Compounds (VOCs) analysis was performed. Furthermore, sensory evaluation, classical microbiological analysis, Total Volatile Base-Nitrogen/TVB-N and Trimethylamine-Nitrogen/TMA-N determination were also carried out.

Stability in ankle fractures: Diagnosis and treatment.

Arthroscopic versus open ankle arthrodesis.

Background: It is thought that arthroscopic ankle fusion offers improved outcomes over open fusion in terms of functional outcomes, time to fusion, length of stay and fewer complications. However, there are doubts about whether correction of established severe deformity can be achieved using the arthroscopic approach.

Methods: A retrospective review of medical records and radiographs at our hospital identified consecutive tibio-talar ankle fusions between April 2009 and March 2014 with minimum 1 year follow up.

Treatment of first metatarsophalangeal joint arthritis using hemiarthroplasty with a synthetic cartilage implant or arthrodesis: A comparison of operative and recovery time.

Association Between Patient Factors and Outcome of Synthetic Cartilage Implant Hemiarthroplasty vs First Metatarsophalangeal Joint Arthrodesis in Advanced Hallux Rigidus.

Background: We evaluated data from a clinical trial of first metatarsophalangeal joint (MTPJ1) implant hemiarthroplasty and arthrodesis to determine the association between patient factors and clinical outcomes.

Methods: Patients ≥18 years with hallux rigidus grade 2, 3, or 4 were treated with synthetic cartilage implant MTPJ1 hemiarthroplasty or arthrodesis. Pain visual analog scale (VAS), Foot and Ankle Ability Measure (FAAM) sports and activities of daily living (ADL) scores, and Short Form-36 Physical Function (SF-36 PF) subscore were obtained preoperatively, and at 2, 6, 12, 24, 52, and 104 weeks postoperatively.

Stable fractures of the ankle can be safely treated non-operatively. It is also gradually being recognised that the integrity of the 'medial column' is essential for the stability of the fracture. It is generally thought that bi- and tri-malleolar fractures are unstable, as are pronation external rotation injuries resulting in an isolated high fibular fracture (Weber type-C), where the deltoid ligament is damaged or the medial malleolus fractured.

Low complexity and wireless enabled characteristics can offer the required flexibility for sensor deployment in adaptable sensing networks for continuous monitoring and management of industrial assets. Here are presented the design, development and operation of a class of low cost photonic sensors for monitoring the ageing process and the operational characteristics of coolant fluids used in an industrial heavy machinery infrastructure.

Respiratory hypersensitivity reactions to NSAIDs in Europe: the global allergy and asthma network (GA LEN) survey.

Background: Nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) are among the most prevalent drugs inducing hypersensitivity reactions. The aim of this analysis was to estimate the prevalence of NSAID-induced respiratory symptoms in population across Europe and to assess its association with upper and lower respiratory tract disorders.

Methods: The GA LEN survey was conducted in 22 centers in 15 European countries.

Background: Although a variety of great toe implants have been tried in an attempt to maintain toe motion, the majority have failed with loosening, malalignment/dislocation, implant fragmentation and bone loss. A Web-based database of genetic association studies in cutaneous melanoma enhanced with network-driven data exploration tools.

The publicly available online database MelGene provides a comprehensive, regularly updated, collection of data from genetic association studies in cutaneous melanoma (CM), including random-effects meta-analysis results of all eligible polymorphisms. The updated database version includes data from 192 publications with information on 1114 significantly associated polymorphisms across 280 genes, along with new front-end and back-end capabilities. Various types of relationships between data are calculated and visualized as networks.

Cross-cultural adaptation and validation of the Greek OSA-18 questionnaire in children undergoing polysomnography.

Objective: Translations of validated questionnaires help to compare different countries/cultures populations and establish protocols for global health. OSA-18 is a validated disease-specific questionnaire for pediatric Obstructive Sleep Apnea (OSA). Our aim was to validate OSA-18 in Greek and correlate it with polysomnography results and OSA severity.

Taking out the tarsal coalition was easy: but now the foot is even flatter. What now?

Patients with a preexisting hindfoot deformity, who undergo resection (with or without soft tissue interposition) of a tarsal coalition, may present with recurrent pain and worsening planovalgus deformity. This is due to the secondary effect of soft tissue contractures (lateral ligaments, peroneal tendons, calf muscles) "pulling" the foot into more valgus. Physiotherapy and insoles may help some patients.
