First-Principles Study on Formation Mechanism of Six-Coordinated Si in Silicophosphate Glass.

Six-coordinated Si (Si) structures are readily formed in silicophosphate glasses with high PO contents. Although experiments and simulations have provided some information on the local configurations around Si, further research on the formation mechanism of Si at the atomic scale is needed. To investigate the formation mechanism of Si, we performed dynamic and static analyses based on first-principles calculations.

Computer-assisted surgery with markerless augmented reality for the surgical removal of mandibular odontogenic cysts: report of two clinical cases.

Odontogenic cysts are commonly seen in clinical practice. Surgical enucleation of these cysts becomes challenging when they form adjacent to anatomically important structures. Recently, computer-assisted surgery using computer-aided preoperative simulation and augmented reality (AR) has been applied in oral and maxillofacial surgery.

Effect of Statins on Patients With Osteoradionecrosis of the Jaw.

Background: Osteoradionecrosis of the jaw (ORN) is a late complication of radiation therapy. Radiation-induced fibrosis is the most likely mechanism for developing ORN, and statins are effective against radiation-induced fibrosis. However, no reports have indicated the direct effectiveness of statins in treating ORN.

Effect of Frequent Computed Tomography Examinations with Contrast Media on the Renal Function of Patients with Oral Squamous Cell Cancer and an Evaluation of Risk Factors for Post-Operative Chronic Kidney Disease.

Purpose: This retrospective study aimed to investigate the effect of frequent computed tomography (CT) examinations with contrast media on the renal function of patients with oral squamous cell cancer (OSCC) that underwent radical surgery, by using estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFR); to identify risk factors of occurrence of post-operative chronic kidney disease (CKD) in these patients; and to explore the relationship between risk factors and occurrence of postoperative CKD during follow-up.

Methods: Herein, 188 patients (107 male; 81 female) who underwent radical surgery for OSCC were included. We evaluated the risk factors for postoperative CKD after treatment, including demographic, perioperative, and postoperative factors by univariate and multivariate analyses.

Correlation between the Closure Time of Patent Ductus Arteriosus in Preterm Infants and Long-Term Neurodevelopmental Outcome.

In patent ductus arteriosus (PDA) in preterm infants, the relationship between treatment timing and long-term developmental prognosis remains unclear. The purpose of this study was to clarify the relationship between the age in days when ductus arteriosus closure occurred and long-term development. Preterm infants with a birth weight of less than 1500 g who were admitted to our NICU over a period of 9 years (2011-2019) and were diagnosed with PDA were included.

A clinical presentation of markerless augmented reality assisted surgery for resection of a dentigerous cyst in the maxillary sinus.

Dentigerous cysts (DC) in the maxillary sinus are rare and pose challenges for effective treatment. Despite various available surgical techniques, a definitive approach remains debated. This study introduces a markerless Augmented Reality Assisted Surgery (ARAS) system that utilizes tooth image recognition and surgical simulation to enhance the precision of maxillary sinus DC extractions.

Diagnostic approach for classic Hodgkin lymphoma in small samples with an emphasis on PD-L1 expression and EBV harboring in tumor cells: a brief review from morphology to biology.

Classic Hodgkin lymphoma (CHL) was first described in 1832 by Thomas Hodgkin, and is characterized by a small number of Hodgkin and Reed-Sternberg cells in a rich inflammatory background. However, even in this modern era, due to the histological and biological overlap with CHL and other B-cell malignancies, including mediastinal grey zone lymphoma and other lymphomas accompanied by "Hodgkinoid cells", their discrimination is challenging and sometimes impossible. The complexity and ambiguity of the boundaries of CHL and its related diseases make the definition of CHL unresolved.

Vimentin-positive invasive breast carcinoma of no special type: A breast carcinoma with lethal biological characteristics.

Vimentin is a stable mesenchymal immunohistochemical marker and is widely recognized as a major marker of mesenchymal tumors. The purpose of the present study was to investigate if the vimentin expression status might serve as a significant predictor of outcomes in patients with invasive breast carcinoma of no special type (IBC-NST) and to investigate, by comprehensive RNA sequencing analyses, the mechanisms involved in the heightened malignant potential of vimentin-positive IBC-NSTs. This study, conducted using the data of 855 patients with IBC-NST, clearly identified vimentin expression status as a very important independent biological parameter for accurately predicting the outcomes in patients with IBC-NST.

Precise characterization of a corridor-shaped structure in Khufu's Pyramid by observation of cosmic-ray muons.

Khufu's Pyramid is one of the largest archaeological monument all over the world, which still holds many mysteries. In 2016 and 2017, the ScanPyramids team reported on several discoveries of previously unknown voids by cosmic-ray muon radiography that is a non-destructive technique ideal for the investigation of large-scale structures. Among these discoveries, a corridor-shaped structure has been observed behind the so-called Chevron zone on the North face, with a length of at least 5 meters.

Which modality is better to diagnose high-grade transformation in retroperitoneal liposarcoma? Comparison of computed tomography, positron emission tomography, and magnetic resonance imaging.

Background: Survival in patients with retroperitoneal liposarcoma (RPLS) depends on the surgical management of the dedifferentiated foci. The present study investigated the diagnostic yield of contrast-enhanced CT, F-fluorodeoxyglucose positron emission tomography (PET), and diffusion-weighted MRI in terms of dedifferentiated foci within the RPLS.

Methods: Patients treated with primary or recurrent RPLS who underwent the above imaging between January 2010 and December 2021 were retrospectively reviewed.

Trends and future projections of cervical cancer-related outcomes in Japan: What happens if the HPV vaccine program is not implemented?

Contrary to other developed countries, in Japan, recent years have seen increases in cervical cancer incidence and mortality among young people. However, the human papillomavirus (HPV) vaccine program, a key measure for avoiding cervical cancer, has been virtually suspended. Temporal changes in cervical cancer profiles in this unique situation have not been fully investigated epidemiologically.

Computer-Assisted Preoperative Simulation and Augmented Reality for Extraction of Impacted Supernumerary Teeth: A Clinical Case Report of Two Cases.

Delayed eruption, malocclusion, poor oral hygiene, and formation of follicular cysts are some complications associated with an impacted supernumerary tooth (ST). Although surgical extraction is one of the methods to prevent these complications, it can also lead to fractured roots or has a risk of permanent injury to young teeth and gingiva. Recently, computer-assisted preoperative simulation has been helpful in planning the surgery for precise extraction of impacted ST guided with 3-dimensional images.

Time to Recurrence Associated With Poor Prognosis in Japanese Oral Squamous Cell Carcinoma Patients.

Purpose: Recurrence in oral squamous cell carcinoma (OSCC) is not rare. Due to lack of studies assessing characteristics of recurrent OSCC, including time to recurrence and outcomes, we sought to investigate its characteristics, time to recurrence, and outcomes in Japanese OSCC patients.

Methods: This study was a nonrandomized retrospective cohort study in a tertiary referral centre.

Laminectomy triggers symptomatic growth of spinal schwannoma in a patient with schwannomatosis.

Background: Schwannomatosis (SWN) is genetically similar to neurofibromatosis type 2 (NF2) and represents a NF2 gene mutation. Previous studies have shown that these mutations in both neurons and Schwann cells can lead to the development of schwannomas after nerve crush injuries. Here, we reviewed the potential pathoanatomical mechanisms for the development of a trauma-induced spinal schwannomas in a 55-year-old male with SWN.

Tumor budding and fibrotic focus-proposed grading system for tumor budding in invasive carcinoma no special type of the breast.

Tumor budding grade is a very useful histological prognostic indicator for colorectal cancer patients. Recently, it has been also reported as a significant prognostic indicator in invasive breast carcinoma patients. Our group and others have previously reported that the presence of a fibrotic focus in the tumor is a very useful histological finding for accurately predicting the prognosis in patients with invasive carcinoma of no special type (ICNST) of the breast.

Strategy for preventing skin paddle necrosis in mandibular reconstruction with free fibula osteocutaneous flap.

Background: Non-thrombotic skin paddle necrosis occasionally occurs during mandibular reconstructions with free fibula osteocutaneous flaps. The number of perforators, size of the skin paddle, and ischemia time of the flap are considered as causes of skin paddle necrosis. The importance of donor side selection has also been highlighted.

Two cases of solitary fibrous tumor/hemangiopericytoma with different clinical features according to the World Health Organization classification: case report and review of the literature.

Solitary fibrous tumors (SFTs) and hemangiopericytomas (HPCs) have been classified as one entity by the World Health Organization in 2016 due to gene fusion between NAB2 and STAT6. In the Central Nervous System (CNS), a hypocellular, collagenized tumor with a classic SFT phenotype is considered grade I, whereas more densely cellular tumors mostly corresponding to the HPC phenotype are classified as grade II or III (anaplastic) depending in mitotic count (<5 >5 mitoses per 10 high-power fields). Herein, we report two cases of targeted SFT/HPC in which pathological differences and WHO grading affect clinical features.

Local Application of Transcutaneous Carbon Dioxide Paste Decreases Inflammation and Accelerates Wound Healing.

Introduction:  Delayed wound healing after surgery lowers the long-term quality of a patient's life and leads to discomfort and pain. However, treatments for wound healing are often difficult and have not yet been fully established. In this study, we investigated the effect of a special paste that can be administered transdermally and holds a non-gaseous carbon dioxide (CO) source in its carrier, which can be applied to the head and neck region for wound healing in a rat skin defect model.

Clinicopathologic Analysis of Primary Adrenal Diffuse Large B-Cell Lymphoma: A Reappraisal of 23 Japanese Patients Based on EBV Association and PD-L1 Expression in Tumor Cells.

Primary adrenal diffuse large B-cell lymphoma (PA-DLBCL) is rare. We investigate 23 Japanese patients with PA-DLBCL to understand the clinicopathologic features and biological behavior of this disease. The 17 males and 6 females had a median age of 74 years (range: 40 to 86 y).

Diagnostic utility of programmed cell death ligand 1 (clone SP142) immunohistochemistry for malignant lymphoma and lymphoproliferative disorders: A brief review.

The programmed cell death 1 (PD1)/PD1 ligand (PD-L1) axis plays an important role in tumor cell escape from immune control and has been most extensively investigated for therapeutic purposes. However, PD-L1 immunohistochemistry is still not used widely for diagnosis. We review the diagnostic utility of PD-L1 (by clone SP142) immunohistochemistry in large-cell lymphomas, mainly consisting of classic Hodgkin lymphoma (CHL) and diffuse large B-cell lymphoma (DLBCL).

Lymphocyte-depleted classic Hodgkin lymphoma with primary extranodal disease: Two cases that highlight the combination of immunodeficiency and immune escape in the pathogenesis.

Neoplastic programmed cell death ligand 1 (PD-L1) expression, activated by PD-L1 gene alterations, is strongly associated with classic Hodgkin lymphoma (CHL). This association enabled a diagnostic consensus for lymphocyte-depleted CHL (LD-CHL), a previously enigmatic disease. We describe two patients with LD-CHL and primary extranodal disease.
