Although children with developmental coordination disorder (DCD) show impaired precision grip control due to a sensory-motor integration deficit, their spatial instability (such as changes in force direction and object roll during a precision grip task) is unclear. Herein, we investigated the spatial instability in the precision grip force control of children with poor manual dexterity. We divided 66 school-aged children who performed a precision gripping and lifting of heavy- or lightweight objects into those with low manual dexterity ( = 11) and those with high manual dexterity ( = 55) as revealed by the Movement Assessment Battery for Children (2nd edition).

Potential of Continuous Local Antibiotic Perfusion Therapy for Fracture-Related Infections.

Introduction: Fracture-related infections (FRIs) are challenging for orthopedic surgeons, as conventional surgical treatment and systemic antimicrobial therapy cannot completely control local infections. Continuous local antibiotic perfusion (CLAP) is a novel and innovative therapy for bone and soft-tissue infections, and is expected to eradicate biofilms by maintaining a sustained high concentration of antimicrobial agents at the infected site. If CLAP therapy can eradicate infection even in cases with implants while preserving the implants, it would be an ideal and effective treatment for local refractory infections.

Background: This study aimed to investigate the association between evacuation status and lifestyle-related disease risks among Fukushima residents following the Great East Japan earthquake.

Methods: Fukushima health management survey respondents were classified into non-evacuees, returnees, evacuees in lifted areas, and evacuees in banned areas. During a seven-year follow-up, 22,234 men and 31,158 women were included.

Background: Temporary fully covered self-expandable metal stent (FCSEMS) placement is performed for benign choledochojejunal anastomotic stenosis (bCJS). However, recurrence may develop after stricture resolution. We investigated endoscopic biliary stenting using FCSEMS for bCJS.

BCOR-CCNB3 sarcoma arising in the pharynx.

Reports on BCOR-CCNB3 sarcoma in the head and neck region are scarce, given their unknown etiology. An 18-year-old male patient presented a rapidly enlarging tumor extending from the right nasopharynx to the oropharynx. Histological examination showed a spindle cell sarcoma with BCOR-CCNB3 fusion detected by fluorescence in situ hybridization, and BCOR-CCNB3 was diagnosed.

Accurate cup placement using a portable navigation system during total hip arthroplasty based on pelvic orientation in the lateral decubitus position.

Background: We previously proposed an accurate cup placement procedure using a portable navigation system (PNS) for total hip arthroplasty (THA) in the lateral decubitus position; however, the accuracy of our proposed procedure has not been shown, the aim of this study was to demonstrate the accuracy.

Methods: We prospectively analyzed 79 hips treated with primary THA; 40 hips treated until June 2020 were included in the conventional procedure (CP) group, and 39 hips treated from July 2020 were included in the modified procedure (MP) group. In the MP, pelvic orientation is considered to be the set coordinate axes in addition to the CP using the PNS.

The prevalence and risk factors of pubic bone marrow edema in femoroacetabular impingement and hip dysplasia.

Femoroacetabular impingement syndrome (FAIS) has been associated with osteitis pubis; however, it is still unclear whether hip dysplasia is associated with osteitis pubis. This study aimed to investigate (i) the incidence of pubic bone marrow edema (BME) on magnetic resonance imaging in symptomatic patients with FAIS, borderline developmental dysplasia of the hip (BDDH) and developmental dysplasia of the hip (DDH) undergoing hip arthroscopic surgery with labral preservation and (ii) the demographic and radiographic factors associated with pubic BME. A total of 259 symptomatic patients undergoing hip arthroscopic surgery between July 2016 and April 2019 were retrospectively reviewed and divided into three groups: FAIS (180 patients), BDDH (29 patients) and DDH (50 patients).

Irinotecan-induced severe hypotension in a patient with lung cancer.

Most hypotension during chemotherapy is caused by an allergic mechanism. Conversely, non-allergic hypotension due to chemotherapy is rare. In this case report, we present a patient who suffered severe hypotension followed by the administration of irinotecan-based chemotherapy and some supportive care such as steroids for preventing emesis.

Surgical technique for superselective neck dissection under local anesthesia in recurrent head and neck cancer.

The aim of this paper is to describe a safe and effective surgical technique for neck dissection under local anesthesia. An increasing number of patients cannot undergo general anesthesia due to systemic complication arising from old age. Moreover, the long-term survival of patients with recurrent or metastatic cancer due to advances in chemotherapy has increased the necessity of neck dissection under local anesthesia.

Background: Diagnostic vitrectomy is an important method for evaluating uveitis, and its diagnostic utility is high regardless of whether the uveitis is infectious or non-infectious. Conjunctival squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) is the most common ocular surface neoplasia. The purpose of this retrospective study was to examine the role of regulatory T cell (Treg) activity in tumor immunity and investigate the tumor microenvironment as a new treatment focus in conjunctival SCC. Cancer progression gene array and immunohistochemical analyses of FOXP3 as a Treg marker, CD8 as a tumor-infiltrating lymphocyte marker, and CXCR4 expression on activated Tregs were conducted in a series of 31 conjunctival SCC cases.

First Validation of Myocardial Flow Reserve Derived from Dynamic Tc-Sestamibi CZT-SPECT Camera Compared with N-Ammonia PET.

N-ammonia positron emission tomography (NH-PET) can evaluate myocardial blood flow (MBF) at rest, stress, and myocardial flow reserve (MFR) as well as the ratio of MBF at stress to that at rest. MFR is useful in predicting the prognoses of patients with various heart diseases. Cadmium-zinc-telluride single photon emission computed tomography (CZT-SPECT) enables us to acquire dynamic images of radiotracer kinetics and measure original MBF and MFR using Tc-sestamibi.

Lifestyle Factors Associated with Undernutrition in Older People after the Great East Japan Earthquake: A Prospective Study in the Fukushima Health Management Survey.

We conducted a longitudinal examination to assess the relationship between lifestyle habits, including exercise habits, and the incidence of undernutrition after the Great East Japan Earthquake in March 2011. Of the 31,411 participants aged ≥60 years who lived in the municipalities' evacuation areas before the disaster and had undergone health examinations, 17,622 persons with a body mass index of 20-25 kg/m were followed up through the FY 2017 (a mean follow-up of 6.9 years).

Medical Professional Enhancement Using Explainable Artificial Intelligence in Fetal Cardiac Ultrasound Screening.

Diagnostic support tools based on artificial intelligence (AI) have exhibited high performance in various medical fields. However, their clinical application remains challenging because of the lack of explanatory power in AI decisions (black box problem), making it difficult to build trust with medical professionals. Nevertheless, visualizing the internal representation of deep neural networks will increase explanatory power and improve the confidence of medical professionals in AI decisions.

Plasma Tsukushi Concentration Is Associated with High Levels of Insulin and FGF21 and Low Level of Total Cholesterol in a General Population without Medication.

Tsukushi (TSK) is a member of the small leucine-rich proteoglycan family that controls developmental processes and organogenesis. TSK was also identified as a new hepatokine, which is mainly expressed in the liver, and is secreted by hepatocytes, to regulate energy and glycolipid metabolism in response to nonalcoholic fatty liver disease. However, the role of plasma TSK, especially its role in the general population, has not been fully addressed.

We recently observed that ALDH2 is also expressed in skeletal muscle mitochondria; thus, we hypothesize that rs671 polymorphism-promoted functional loss of ALDH2 may induce deleterious effects in human skeletal muscle. We aimed to clarify the association of the rs671 polymorphism with muscle phenotypes and athletic capacity in a large Japanese cohort.

Development of novel potent ligands for GPR85, an orphan G protein-coupled receptor expressed in the brain.

GPR85 is a member of the G protein-coupled receptor and is a super-conserved receptor expressed in the brain sub-family (Super Conserved Receptor Expressed in Brain; SREB) with GPR27 and GPR173. These three receptors are "orphan receptors"; however, their endogenous ligands have not been identified. SREB has garnered the interest of many scientists because it is expressed in the central nervous system and is evolutionarily conserved.
