The present study concerns seasonal variations, correlation coefficient and biodiversity indices of zooplanktons during January-December, 2008 in the Harsool-Savangi dam, Aurangabad, India. A total of 25 genera were recorded of which 10 were Rotifers, 8 Cladocerons, 5 Copepods and 2 Ostracods. Present study revealed maximum percentage wise compositions of Rotifers at north site were 58.

Daptomycin for the treatment of infective endocarditis: results from a European registry.

Objectives: Infective endocarditis (IE) is a complex infection associated with high mortality. Daptomycin, a cyclic lipopeptide antibiotic highly active against Gram-positive bacteria, has recently been incorporated into IE treatment guidelines. This retrospective analysis provides insights into the use of daptomycin in IE in the European Cubicin(®) Outcomes Registry Experience (EU-CORE(SM)) between 2006 and 2010.

Fast determination of absolute metabolite concentrations by spatially encoded 2D NMR: application to breast cancer cell extracts.

Two-dimensional nuclear magnetic resonance (2D NMR) forms a powerful tool for the quantitative analysis of complex mixtures such as samples of metabolic relevance. However, its use for quantitative purposes is far from being trivial, not only because of the associated experiment time, but also due to its subsequent high sensitivity to hardware instabilities affecting its precision. In this paper, an alternative approach is considered to measure absolute metabolite concentrations in complex mixtures with a high precision in a reasonable time.

Safety and immunogenicity of an FP9-vectored candidate tuberculosis vaccine (FP85A), alone and with candidate vaccine MVA85A in BCG-vaccinated healthy adults: a phase I clinical trial.

The safety and immunogenicity of a new candidate tuberculosis (TB) vaccine, FP85A was evaluated alone and in heterologous prime-boost regimes with another candidate TB vaccine, MVA85A. This was an open label, non-controlled, non-randomized Phase I clinical trial. Healthy previously BCG-vaccinated adult subjects were enrolled sequentially into three groups and vaccinated with FP85A alone, or both FP85A and MVA85A, with a four week interval between vaccinations.

Effect of micronutrient supplementation around calving on the plasma cortisol levels of Murrah buffaloes and Sahiwal and Karan Fries cows.

Micronutrients when fed around peripartum may reduce the stress induced by cortisol. With this objective, 24 Sahiwal (SW) and 24 Karan Fries (KF) cows and 24 Murrah (Mu) buffaloes were taken and divided into four groups of six each. Objective: Kikuchi-Fujimoto disease (KFD) is a self-limiting disorder which usually affects young women. There are only a few studies on pediatric KFD patients and their fine-needle aspiration (FNA) cytodiagnosis. We report a series of pediatric KFD patients diagnosed by FNA cytology and compare them with adults.

Efficacy and safety of apremilast, an oral phosphodiesterase 4 inhibitor, in ankylosing spondylitis.

Objectives: To evaluate the efficacy and safety of an oral phosphodiesterase 4 inhibitor, apremilast, in treatment of ankylosing spondylitis (AS) by monitoring symptoms and signs in a pilot study including exploratory investigation of effects of PDE4 inhibition on blood biomarkers of bone biology.

Methods: In this double-blind, placebo-controlled, single-centre, Phase II study, patients with symptomatic AS with active disease on MRI were randomised to apremilast 30 mg BID or placebo over 12 weeks. Bath Indices were monitored serially.

Expression Profiling of WSSV ORF 199 and Shrimp Ubiquitin Conjugating Enzyme in WSSV Infected Penaeus monodon.

White spot syndrome virus (WSSV) is one of the major viral pathogens affecting shrimp aquaculture. Four proteins, WSSV199, WSSV 222, WSSV 249 and WSSV 403, from WSSV are predicted to encode a RING-H2 domain, which in presence of ubiquitin conjugating enzyme (E2) in shrimp can function as viral E3 ligase and modulate the host ubiquitin proteasome pathway. Modulation of host ubiquitin proteasome pathway by viral proteins is implicated in viral pathogenesis.

South Asian Consensus Guideline: Use of GLP-1 analogue therapy in diabetes during Ramadan.

Ramadan is a lunar based month, during which Muslims across the world observe the ritual fast. This provides a challenge not only to the diabetic patient who wishes to observe the fast but also to the health care professional managing his diabetes. The challenge is to use therapies which are effective in maintaining good glycemic control and at the same time have a low propensity to cause hypoglycemia during the several hours of no calorie intake.

Thyroid diseases and Ramadan.

In the month of Ramadan, patients with thyroid diseases, most of the time, do not need treatment adjustments and can fast safely without any health hazards. Patients with hypothyroidism taking thyroxine can take their tablets on an empty stomach at bedtime instead of half an hour before Sehr. Patients with hyperthyroidism, on methimazole/carbimazole can continue their dose in once or twice daily regimes, while those on propylthiouracil need to be switched.

Guidelines regarding management of adrenal insufficiency in the Holy month of Ramadan.

Adrenal insufficiency is a life-threatening event, so it is recommended for patients with known adrenal insufficiency to be properly educated regarding sick-day management. In the month of Ramadan, people refrain from eating and drinking during daylight hours. It is very important for patients with adrenal insufficiency, who wish to keep a fast, to be well aware of the disease, the suitable drug to be used for that particular period, warning signs, sick-day management, physical activity, and dietary limits.

Majority of physicians are of the opinion that Ramadan fasting is acceptable for well-balanced type 2 patients conscious of their disease and compliant with their diet and drug intake. Fasting during Ramadan for patients with diabetes carries a risk of an assortment of complications. Islamic rules allow patients not to fast.

Role of oral hypoglycemic agents in the management of type 2 diabetes mellitus during Ramadan.

It is obligatory for all adult Muslims to observe fast during the holy month of Ramadan, but sick individuals including those with diabetes mellitus are exempted from the duty of fasting. Specific medical advice must be provided to individual patients concerning the potential risks they must accept if they decide to fast. This Consensus Statement describes the pre-Ramadan assessment, planning, prescription, management, and monitoring of patients on insulin, who wish to fast.

Effect of exendin (exenatide)--GLP 1 receptor agonist on the thyroid and parathyroid gland in a rat model.

Exenatide or Exendin-4 is a 39-amino acid agonist of the glucagon like peptide (GLP-1) receptor approved for the adjunctive treatment for type 2 diabetes. Recent reports suggest that GLP-1 agonists may also have distant effects including C-cell thyroid hyperplasia. The aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of exendin-4 on the thyroid and parathyroid cells in a rat model.

Effect of vaccine dose on the safety and immunogenicity of a candidate TB vaccine, MVA85A, in BCG vaccinated UK adults.

Purpose: A non-randomised, open-label, Phase I safety and immunogenicity dose-finding study to assess the safety and immunogenicity of the candidate TB vaccine Modified Vaccinia virus Ankara expressing Antigen 85A (MVA85A) from Mycobacterium tuberculosis (MTB) in healthy adult volunteers previously vaccinated with BCG.

Methods: Healthy BCG-vaccinated volunteers were vaccinated with either 1×10(7) or 1×10(8)PFU of MVA85A. All adverse events were documented and antigen specific T cell responses were measured using an ex vivo IFN-γ ELISPOT assay.

Induction of CD152 (CTLA-4) and LAP (TGF-β1) in human Foxp3- CD4+ CD25- T cells modulates TLR-4 induced TNF-α production.

CD152 (CTLA-4) is a co-stimulatory molecule that is expressed by T cells and negatively regulates immune responses. Here, we report the identification of a novel ligand, GPC(81-95), with the ability to induce both CD152 and LAP (TGF-β1) on human Foxp3(-) CD25(-) CD4(+) T cells. The results demonstrate that GPC(81-95) peptide-induced cell surface CD152 is endocytosed back into the cell during stimulation.

The challenge of developing a new predictive formula to estimate energy requirements in ventilated critically ill children.

Background: Traditionally, energy requirements have been calculated using predictive equations. These methods have failed to calculate energy expenditure accurately. Routine indirect calorimetry has been suggested, but this method is technically demanding and costly.

Anti-apoptotic potential of gymnemic acid phospholipid complex pretreatment in Wistar rats with experimental cardiomyopathy.

Cardiomyocyte apoptosis in heart failure has been the topic of research in many recent studies. In the present investigation, the potential cardioprotective effect of gymnemic acid phospholipid complex (GPC) on myocardial apoptosis and cardiac function was studied in doxorubicin (DOX; 30 mg/kg/ip/single dose)-induced cardiomyopathy model in rats. Doxorubicin induced cardiomyopathy was evidenced by significant hemodynamic changes (increased systolic, diastolic, mean arterial pressure and heart rate), decreased heart weight to body weight ratio, increase in serum lactate dehydrogenase (LDH) and Ca2+ levels and decrease in myocardial Na+/K+ ATPase levels along with caspase-3 activation.

Responses to dehydration in the one-humped camel and effects of blocking the renin-angiotensin system.

Our objectives were to compare the levels of circulating electrolytes, hormones, and renal function during 20 days of dehydration in camels versus the level in non-dehydrated camels and to record the effect of blocking angiotensin II AT1 receptors with losartan during dehydration. Dehydration induced significant increments in serum sodium, creatinine, urea, a substantial fall in body weight, and a doubling in plasma arginine vasopressin (AVP) levels. Plasma aldosterone, however, was unaltered compared with time-matched controls.
