Background: Maintenance electroconvulsive therapy (m-ECT) is effective in preventing recurrences of depressive episodes. There is little information on long-term m-ECT extending over several years and its impact on cognitive functions. This study was an attempt to determine the efficacy and side effects of long-term m-ECT.

Post-electroconvulsive therapy status epilepticus and tardive seizure in a patient with rapid cycling bipolar disorder, epilepsy, and intellectual disability.

We describe a case of status epilepticus and tardive seizure after electroconvulsive therapy in a patient with rapid cycling bipolar disorder, epilepsy, and intellectual disability. This case study illustrates the need of careful inquiry of history of seizure while planning electroconvulsive therapy and the concomitant use of antiepileptic drugs if warranted especially in vulnerable population such as patients with intellectual disability.
