Background And Aims: Presence of active hepatitis C virus (HCV) infection may influence the outcome of patients treated for hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC), although this issue has never been adequately assessed in a large series of patients. The aim of this study was to evaluate whether the presence of active HCV affects the survival of patients treated for HCC.

Methods: This study assessed the outcome of 3123 anti-HCV-positive patients with HCC, subdivided according to the presence of active HCV infection or previous sustained virological response (SVR).

Background And Objective: Our aim was to determine the clinical characteristics, temporal trends, and survival outcomes for sarcomatoid-dedifferentiated renal cell carcinoma (sRCC), as sRCC has historically had poor prognosis and a contemporary cohort has not been well characterized in a population-based study.

Methods: Data for 302 630 RCC cases from 2010 to 2019 were extracted from the National Cancer Data Base, of which 4.1% (12 329) were sRCC.

Article Synopsis
  • This study examines how the Mayo Adhesive Probability (MAP) score and body mass index (BMI) affect kidney function decline after patients undergo robotic assisted partial nephrectomy (RAPN).
  • A total of 258 patients were analyzed over a median follow-up of 33 months, revealing that a higher MAP score and increased BMI are correlated with a greater risk of developing chronic kidney disease stage 3 (CKD-S3).
  • The findings suggest that higher MAP scores and obesity can negatively impact long-term kidney function, indicating a need for careful monitoring before surgery in at-risk patients.

Article Synopsis
  • The study aimed to compare the effectiveness of high-resolution micro-ultrasound-guided transrectal biopsy (TRBx) versus MRI/conventional transrectal ultrasound-guided transperineal biopsy (TPBx) in detecting clinically significant prostate cancer (csPCa).
  • Researchers analyzed data from 1,423 men who underwent prostate biopsies and found no significant difference in csPCa detection rates between the two methods (45% for TRBx and 51% for TPBx).
  • The study identified key predictors for csPCa detection, including family history, age, positive digital rectal exam results, prostate-specific antigen density, and specific imaging scores, while noting limitations like the retrospective nature of the data analysis.

Article Synopsis
  • This study compares outcomes of radical nephrectomy (RN) versus partial nephrectomy (PN) for treating sarcomatoid renal cell carcinoma (sRCC) using a large national database from 2004 to 2019.
  • The analysis found that patients receiving PN had better overall survival rates, particularly in early-stage tumors (cT1 and cT3), although factors like age and tumor characteristics influenced the likelihood of receiving PN.
  • The results suggest that PN can be a viable option for certain patients without compromising outcomes, but disparities in care exist based on income and insurance status, affecting survival rates.

Selective internal radiation therapy (SIRT) has emerged as a viable endovascular treatment strategy for hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC). According to the Barcelona Clinic Liver Cancer (BCLC) classification, SIRT is currently recommended for early- and intermediate-stage HCC that is unsuitable for alternative locoregional therapies. Additionally, SIRT remains a recommended treatment for patients with advanced-stage HCC and portal vein thrombosis (PVT) without extrahepatic metastasis.

Objective: Stage migration in renal cell carcinoma (RCC) has led to an increasing proportion of diagnosed small renal masses. Emerging knowledge regarding heterogeneity of RCC histologies and consequent impact on prognosis led us to further explore outcomes and predictive factors in surgically-treated T1a RCC.

Methods: The INMARC database was queried for T1aN0M0 RCC.

Article Synopsis
  • The study focused on creating a scoring system called the OCA response score (ORS) to predict how individuals with primary biliary cholangitis (PBC) will respond to the treatment using obeticholic acid (OCA).
  • Data were collected from two large cohorts in Italy to derive and validate the score, which includes various clinical factors both before and after six months of treatment.
  • The scoring system demonstrated good predictive ability for treatment response, which could help healthcare providers customize therapies for patients with PBC more effectively.

Article Synopsis
  • The 2022 Barcelona Clinic Liver Cancer algorithm advises against liver resection for patients with multiple small tumors (2 or 3 nodules, each ≤3 cm) in hepatocellular carcinoma.
  • This study retrospectively analyzed data from over 12,000 patients to compare survival outcomes among those undergoing liver resection (LR), percutaneous radiofrequency ablation (PRFA), and transarterial chemoembolization (TACE).
  • Results showed that LR had the highest survival rates at 1, 3, and 5 years (89.11%, 70.98%, 56.44% respectively) compared to PRFA and TACE, indicating that LR may offer better long-term outcomes in treating early multin

Human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) infection has historically been related to the development of specific cancers, some of which are so closely linked to the infection, such as Kaposi's Sarcoma (KS), that they have earned the name Acquired Immuno-Deficiency Syndrome (AIDS)-defining cancers (ADCs). While the development of antiretroviral therapy (ART) has decreased the incidence of AIDS-defining cancers, the resulting aging of people living with HIV (PLWH) highlighted an increased occurrence of other forms of cancer. At the "Gaetano Martino" hospital in Messina, we developed a multidisciplinary approach by creating a bridge between the Oncology Unit and the Infectious Diseases Unit to carry out screening and a more rapid diagnostic and therapeutic journey for cancers in PLWH.

Background & Aims: Chronic hepatitis D virus (HDV) often leads to end-stage liver disease and hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC). Comprehensive data pertaining to large populations with HDV and HCC are missing, therefore we sought to assess the characteristics, management, and outcome of these patients, comparing them to patients with hepatitis B virus (HBV) infection.

Methods: We analysed the Italian Liver Cancer database focusing on patients with positivity for HBV surface antigen and anti-HDV antibodies (HBV/HDV, n = 107) and patients with HBV infection alone (n = 588).
