The jamming transition of soft particles characterized by narrow size distributions has been well studied by physicists. However, polydispersed systems are more relevant to engineering, and the influence of polydispersity on jamming phenomena is still unexplored. Here, we numerically investigate jamming transitions of polydispersed soft particles in two dimensions.

A new configuration for near-field ptychography using a full-field illumination with a structured electron beam is proposed. A structured electron beam illuminating the entire field of view is scanned over the specimen, and a series of in-line holograms formed in the near-field region below the specimen are collected. The structured beam is generated by a conductive film with random openings, which ensures high stability and coherence of the beam.

Immune dysregulation is an important aspect of schizophrenia (SZ) and bipolar disorders (BD) pathophysiology, including not only inflammatory but also autoimmune process reflective of abnormal humoral immune responses. Given that B cell-activating factor (BAFF) is an integral aspect of B lymphocyte regulation, the current study investigated BAFF in SZ and BD. 255 SZ patients, 407 BD patients and 185 healthy controls (HC) were investigated across three aspects of soluble BAFF (sBAFF) by (i) comparing sBAFF circulatory levels across SZ, BD and HC, (ii) determining potential correlations between the circulating levels of sBAFF and the genotype distribution of a functionally relevant polymorphism, namely the TNFSF13B 3'UTR insertion-deletion polymorphism (GCTGT>A), (iii) analyzing relationships between both sBAFF levels and 3'UTR insertion-deletion genotypes and disease risk, patients clinical characteristics and circulating levels of potent inflammatory molecules.

  • The study investigates the link between soluble HLA-E isoforms and the risk and severity of schizophrenia and bipolar disorder in a Tunisian population.
  • Findings indicate that bipolar disorder patients have significantly higher levels of sHLA-E, especially during acute phases, while schizophrenia patients show higher levels in stable conditions but not generally.
  • The results support the idea that sHLA-E can be considered a reliable inflammatory marker for both disorders, confirming previous findings in a French cohort.

Mn3Sn is an anomalous Hall effect (AHE) antiferromagnet that exhibits the hysteretic AHE in antiferromagnetic (AFM) phase at room temperature. We report that whisker Mn3Sn crystals grown by the flux method exhibit a non-hysteretic AHE at mid-to-low temperatures when the whisker Mn3Sn is surrounded by a thin layer of ferromagnetic Mn2-xSn. These crystals exhibit a hysteretic AHE above 275 K due to the spin alignment of the inverse triangular lattice, which is similar to other crystals.

The use of sterile recipients is crucial for efficiently producing donor-derived offspring through surrogate broodstock technology for practical aquaculture applications. Although knockout (KO) of the dead end (dnd) gene has been used in previous studies as a sterilization method, it has not been reported in marine fish. In this study, nibe croaker was utilized as a model for marine teleosts that produce small pelagic eggs, and the clustered regularly interspaced short palindromic repeat (CRISPR)/CRISPR-associated protein 9 (CRISPR/Cas9) system was utilized to produce dnd KO fish.

Signal-transducing adaptor protein (STAP)-1 is an adaptor protein that is widely expressed in T cells. In this article, we show that STAP-1 upregulates TCR-mediated T cell activation and T cell-mediated airway inflammation. Using STAP-1 knockout mice and STAP-1-overexpressing Jurkat cells, we found that STAP-1 enhanced TCR signaling, resulting in increased calcium mobilization, NFAT activity, and IL-2 production.

In this study, a new method for the phase retrieval of electron rocking curves observed using convergent-beam electron diffraction, which is applicable to the determination of three-dimensional lattice displacement fields along the beam direction, is proposed. Total variation and total squared variation regularizations are introduced for phase retrieval to suppress overfitting to noise or background signals in the rocking curves and to reproduce the sparse characteristics of displacement fields, which exist only near lattice defects. The results show that the proposed algorithm is effective for rocking curves modulated by the dynamical effect of electron diffraction.

  • Decitabine (DAC) is used to treat conditions like myelodysplastic syndrome (MDS) and acute myeloid leukemia (AML), and a recent study shows its resistance is linked to mitotic regulation.
  • The study found that DAC causes abnormal cell division in myeloid tumors, particularly in cells with TP53 mutations, and that this effect is reduced when the DNMT1 gene is depleted.
  • It was revealed that inhibiting the ATR-CLSPN-CHK1 pathway increases DAC's disruption of mitosis, suggesting that DAC's action is more complex than merely inhibiting DNMT1 and DNA hypomethylation.

Ultracompact mode multiplexers based on mosaic structure for various wavelength bands designed by Bayesian technique are investigated. C-, O-, and C + O band, TE-TE 2-mode multiplexers can be designed with the same footprint, by only changing the mosaic-pattern, showing the great flexibility of mosaic-based devices. Bayesian direct binary search method is used for the design, and it is demonstrated that the Bayesian technique is superior to conventional design method in terms of the best-structure search for the same number of iterations.

The high-entropy concept was applied to the synthesis of transition-metal antimonides, MPtSb (M = equimolar Ru, Rh, Pd, and Ir). High-entropy antimonide samples crystallized in a pseudo-hexagonal NiAs-type crystal structure with a 6/ space group were successfully synthesized through a conventional solid-state reaction and subsequent quenching. A detailed investigation of the composition and equilibration conditions confirmed the reversible phase transition between a multiphase state at low temperature and an entropy-driven single-phase solid solution at high temperatures.

Dense suspensions often exhibit a dramatic response to large external deformation. The recent body of work has related this behavior to transition from an unconstrained lubricated state to a constrained frictional state. Here, we use numerical simulations to study the flow behavior and shear-induced diffusion of frictional non-Brownian spheres in two dimensions under simple shear flow.

Signal-transducing adaptor protein-2 (STAP-2) is an adaptor protein that contains pleckstrin and Src homology 2-like domains, as well as a proline-rich region in its C-terminal region. Our previous study demonstrated that STAP-2 positively regulates TCR signaling by associating with TCR-proximal CD3ζ ITAMs and the lymphocyte-specific protein tyrosine kinase. In this study, we identify the STAP-2 interacting regions of CD3ζ ITAMs and show that the STAP-2-derived synthetic peptide (iSP2) directly interacts with the ITAM sequence and blocks the interactions between STAP-2 and CD3ζ ITAMs.

Using the Jacobian matrix, we obtain a theoretical expression of rigidity and the density of states of two-dimensional amorphous solids consisting of frictional grains in the linear response to an infinitesimal strain, in which we ignore the dynamical friction caused by the slip processes of contact points. The theoretical rigidity agrees with that obtained by molecular dynamics simulations. We confirm that the rigidity is smoothly connected to the value in the frictionless limit.

The stress-strain curve of two-dimensional frictional dispersed grains interacting with a harmonic potential without considering the dynamical slip under a finite strain is determined by using eigenvalue analysis of the Hessian matrix. After the configuration of grains is obtained, the stress-strain curve based on the eigenvalue analysis is in almost perfect agreement with that obtained by the simulation, even if there are plastic deformations caused by stress avalanches. Unlike the naive expectation, the eigenvalues in our model do not indicate any precursors to the stress-drop events.
