Background: Plasma exchange (PE) removes high-molecular-weight substances and is sometimes used for antineutrophil cytoplasmic antibody-associated vasculitis (AAV) with alveolar hemorrhage. Hypotension during PE is rare, except in allergic cases. We report a case of shock likely caused by increased pulmonary vascular resistance (PVR) during PE.

Methods: Following a pre-registered PROSPERO protocol (CRD42023441587), we conducted a comprehensive literature search across multiple databases on July 4, 2024. The review included both full economic evaluations (cost and outcomes) and partial economic evaluations (cost only).

Peritoneal metastasis (PM) remains a major challenge in patients with gastric cancer (GC) and occurs preferentially in adipose-rich organs, such as the omentum. Adipose-derived stem cells (ASCs) may influence cancer behavior. This study aimed to investigate whether ASCs isolated from the omentum can act as progenitors of cancer-associated fibroblasts (CAFs) and analyze their effects on the cancer stem cell (CSC) niche and the treatment resistance of GC cells.

Kolmogorov-Hinze Scales in Turbulent Superfluids.

When a two-component mixture of immiscible fluids is stirred, the fluids are split into smaller domains with more vigorous stirring. We numerically investigate the sizes of such domains in a fully developed turbulent state of a two-component superfluid stirred with energy input rate ε. For the strongly immiscible condition, the typical domain size is shown to be proportional to ε^{-2/5}, as predicted by the Kolmogorov-Hinze theory in classical fluids.

Background: Studies have shown that tumor cell amino acid metabolism is closely associated with lung adenocarcinoma (LUAD) development and progression. Efficacy of Donepezil for Fatigue and Psychological Symptoms in Post-COVID-19 Condition: Study Protocol for a Multicenter Randomized, Placebo-controlled, Double-blind Trial.

Background: Approximately 30% of coronavirus disease 2019 COVID-19 patients develop fatigue and psychological symptoms. We previously demonstrated the efficacy of donepezil, an acetylcholinesterase inhibitor that is widely used to treat dementia, in basic research.

Methods: This is a multicenter, double-blind, randomized, controlled, phase II clinical trial in which 120 patients with COVID-19 will be randomized in a 1:1 ratio to a donepezil or placebo group.

WEE1 confers resistance to KRAS inhibitors in non-small cell lung cancer.

KRAS inhibitors sotorasib and adagrasib have been approved for the treatment of KRAS-mutant non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC). However, the efficacy of single-agent treatments is limited, presumably due to multiple resistance mechanisms. To overcome these therapeutic limitations, combination strategies that potentiate the antitumor efficacy of KRAS inhibitors must be developed.

Background: Understanding the muscle synergies shared between pedaling and walking is crucial for elucidating the mechanisms of human motor control and establishing highly individualized rehabilitation strategies. This study investigated how pedaling direction and speed influence the recruitment of walking-like muscle synergies.

Methods: Twelve healthy male participants pedaled at three speeds (60 RPM, 30 RPM, and 80 RPM) in two rotational directions (forward and backward).

Double Spherulite Formation via Two-Step Crystallization in PTT/PET Blends.

We investigated the crystallization kinetics and morphology evolution of miscible crystalline/crystalline blends of poly(trimethylene terephthalate) (PTT) and poly(ethylene terephthalate) (PET) during isothermal melt crystallization. The integrated light-scattering intensity and the spherulite size increased gradually and then steeply as crystallization progressed in 70/30 PTT/PET at 215 °C, indicating the two-step crystallization behavior. The compact PET spherulite grew in the first step, and the dendritic PTT spherulite grew in the second step, forming the double spherulite consisting of a PET component in the inner region and a PTT one in the outer region.

Highly-efficient full-color holographic movie based on silicon nitride metasurface.

Metasurface holograms offer various advantages, including wide viewing angle, small volume, and high resolution. However, full-color animation of high-resolution images has been a challenging issue. In this study, a full-color dielectric metasurface holographic movie with a resolution of 2322 × 2322 was achieved by spatiotemporally multiplexing 30 frames with blue, green, and red color channels at the wavelengths of 445 nm, 532 nm, and 633 nm at the maximum reconstruction speed of 55.

Background: Artificial intelligence (AI) technology was introduced in medical data area and applied disease prediction models. This study aimed to establish an AI model for predicting lymph node metastasis based on simple medical examinations in patients with non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC).

Methods: We retrospectively analyzed 988 patients with NSCLC who underwent radical pulmonary resection with mediastinal lymph node dissection between January 2011 and October 2022.

Spontaneous Hall effect induced by collinear antiferromagnetic order at room temperature.

Magnetic information is usually stored in ferromagnets, where the ↑ and ↓ spin states are distinguishable due to time-reversal symmetry breaking. These states induce opposite signs of the Hall effect proportional to magnetization, which is widely used for their electrical read-out. By contrast, conventional antiferromagnets with a collinear antiparallel spin configuration cannot host such functions, because of symmetry (time-reversal followed by translation t symmetry) and lack of macroscopic magnetization.

Torsion of the wandering spleen with intestinal obstruction.

Four species of the polyplacophoran genus Cryptoplax were identified among chiton samples collected from the Spratly Islands (Truong Sa), South China Sea. Among them, one is described as new species C. acerocostata n.

Missense Mutant p53 Transactivates Wnt/β-Catenin Signaling in Neighboring p53-Destabilized Cells through the COX-2/PGE2 Pathway.

There is intratumor heterogeneity in the stabilization of missense mutant p53, and it has been thought that only cells with nuclear accumulation of mutant p53 have oncogenic function. However, using mouse intestinal tumor-derived organoids, we show that mutant p53-stabilized cells transactivate Wnt/β-catenin signaling in neighboring p53-destabilized cells through activating the COX-2/PGE2 pathway. These results suggest that both p53-stabilized cells and p53-destabilized cells contribute to malignant progression through interaction within the intratumor microenvironment.
