Article Synopsis
  • Neurodegenerative diseases like Alzheimer's are on the rise due to an aging population and lack of effective early treatments, making early detection crucial for better outcomes.
  • Current diagnostics primarily focus on observable symptoms and existing neuronal damage, while specific biomarkers for Alzheimer's are too narrow, and general biomarkers like NfL lack precise insights.
  • Circulating cell-free DNA (cfDNA) shows promise as a minimally invasive early detection biomarker, providing both general and disease-specific information, but further research is essential to overcome technical challenges and establish its clinical use.

We developed the "Itappachi" universal motion platform for measuring radiation doses under simulated respiratory motion in radiation therapy. The interplay effect, resulting from respiratory motion, degrades dose delivery precision in advanced treatments such as volumetric modulated arc therapy. The Itappachi platform is designed for precise dose measurement in dynamic scenarios through its ability to simulate respiratory motion.

Aim: To assess the cost-effectiveness of diabetic nephropathy treatment with sodium-glucose cotransporter-2 (SGLT2) inhibitors in Japanese clinical practice, considering diabetes-related complications.

Materials And Methods: A population-based Monte Carlo simulation was used to estimate the cost-effectiveness for people with diabetic nephropathy who initiated pharmacotherapy with an SGLT2 inhibitor plus conventional treatment or conventional treatment alone, based on quality-adjusted life-years (QALYs) and healthcare costs. The Canagliflozin and Renal Events in Diabetes with Established Nephropathy Clinical Evaluation study (CREDENCE) and the Japanese Society for Dialysis Research statistical survey were the primary sources of probability and mortality, while Japanese Health Insurance Claims Data were the cost source.

Article Synopsis
  • The study examines the relationship between body mass index (BMI) and the risks of developing colorectal cancer (CRC) and dying from it in the Asian population, highlighting rising obesity rates and CRC incidence.
  • The research pooled data from 17 cohort studies spanning from 1984 to 2002, with a median follow-up of 15.2 years and included nearly 620,000 participants for CRC incidence and over 650,000 for CRC-related mortality.
  • Results indicate that higher BMI significantly increases the risk of incident CRC, with greater risks seen for those classified as obese, especially for colon cancer compared to rectal cancer, and a similar pattern was noted for CRC-related deaths.

Air pollution poses a significant global health risk, with fine particulate matter (PM) such as diesel exhaust particles (DEPs) being of particular concern due to their potential to drive systemic toxicities through bloodstream infiltration. The association between PM exposure and an increased prevalence of metabolic disorders, including obesity, metabolic syndrome, and type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM), is evident against a backdrop of rising global obesity and poor metabolic health. This paper examines the role of adipose tissue in mediating the effects of PM on metabolic health.
