Schistosomiasis, known as bilharzia, is a parasitic disease caused by trematodes of the genus Schistosoma, found primarily in Africa and pockets of the Middle East. Southern Europe seems to be a breeding ground for urogenital schistosomiasis emergence. Ten and five years have passed since the first and the last cases of urogenital schistosomiasis were identified in Corsica (patients who have bathed in the Cavu and/or Solenzara rivers between 2013 and 2019).

Article Synopsis
  • The study investigates the presence of human papillomavirus (HPV) in the semen of men seeking infertility treatment at Amiens University Hospital from May to October 2021, involving 461 participants who provided informed consent.
  • Semen samples were analyzed for HPV using PCR, revealing that 22.3% of men carried HPV, with high-oncogenic-risk types being the most common (57.6%).
  • The analysis found significant associations between HPV carriage and factors like abnormal sperm quality, type of infertility, presence of varicocele, and certain testicular conditions, indicating that HPV may contribute to infertility risks.

Bladder cancer (BC) is a common malignancy in Europe and North America. Among BCs, muscle-invasive BCs (MIBCs) are distinguished, as they require aggressive treatment due to their spreading potential and poor prognosis. Despite its clinical relevance, little information on MIBC in a general population setting is available.

Background: The role of urogenital infections in male infertility has long been the subject of debate.

Methods: A bibliographic search limited to English-language literature on human subjects published before 5/2023 resulted in the selection of 189 articles.

Results: Male infertility is often of multifactorial aetiology, and to optimise the prognosis it is important to manage all the factors that can be corrected, including infectious causes, which represent one of the most frequent aetiologies.

Introduction: Intravesical instillations of mitomycin C, epirubicin and BCG are considered as the standard treatment for most patients diagnosed with non-muscle invasive bladder cancer. These guidelines aim to optimize the adjuvant intravesical treatment in order to increase the efficacy and lower the morbidity associated with its administration.

Methods: We conducted a daily practice survey, an online search of available national regulation recommendations and of published guidelines.

Introduction: Intravesical instillations of BCG are recommended for the treatment of high-risk non-muscle-invasive bladder cancer. However, their prolonged use remains limited by the associated potentially serious adverse effects or complications. The purpose of this article was to provide updated recommendations for the diagnosis and management of adverse events (AEs) or complications of intravesical BCG instillations.

Objectives: In the context of improved medication management of older patients, we wished to evaluate the overprescription of potentially inappropriate drugs [α1-blockers and 5α-reductase inhibitors (5-ARI)] for benign prostate hyperplasia (BPH). These drugs are considered by geriatricians to increase the risk of falls and pharmacodynamic interactions, but these properties have not yet been proven.

Design: This was a descriptive study of drug prescriptions in a geriatric academic center.

Background: Morbidity and mortality associated with prostate cancer in a given geographic area might be related to the level of socioeconomic deprivation. The Somme area (a region of northern France) is considered economically disadvantaged, with major territorial disparities. The aim of this study was to assess the impact of the socioeconomic level on prostate cancer, using data from a population-based cancer registry.

Introduction: Biomarkers for the diagnosis and monitoring treatment response of kidney cancer are urgently needed. Neutrophil gelatinase-associated lipocalin (NGAL) is a relevant urinary biomarker for the diagnosis of a wide variety of acute and chronic kidney diseases. Its potential utility as a prognostic marker of kidney cancer is largely unknown and, therefore, was the subject of this investigation.

Objective: The biopsies of prostate are the reference examination to assert the diagnosis of prostate cancer. Even if the urinary infectious complications are rare thanks to the systematic oral antibiotic prophylaxis, they may still be serious. The SPILF (Society of Infectious Pathology and French language) published in 2014, an important increase of the resistances in fluoroquinolones for Escherichia coli (3 to 25%), whereas this is the most bacterium frequently found in the urinary infections (70-80%).
