The lockdown caused by the COVID-19 pandemic represents a great unknown regarding the physiological changes induced in elite football players. Although it will differ from country to country, the return to sport for professional football players will follow a forced lockdown never experienced and longer than the normal annual season break. Moreover, in addition to an obvious decrease in performance, the lockdown will possibly lead to an increase of the injury risk.

Medical recommendations for home-confined footballers' training during the COVID-19 pandemic: from evidence to practical application.

In early 2020, the world is facing a global emergency called COVID-19. Many professional footballers around the world are home confined. The maintenance of physical capacity is a fundamental requirement for the athlete, so the training sessions must be adapted to this unique situation.

Implications of monocular vision for racing drivers.

We performed two experiments to investigate how monocular vision and a monocular generalized reduction in vision (MRV) impact driving performance during racing. A total of 75 visually normal students or professional racing drivers, were recruited for the two experiments. Driving performance was evaluated under three visual conditions: normal vision, simulated monocularity and simulated monocular reduction in vision.

Accelerated Achilles tendon healing by PDGF gene delivery with mesoporous silica nanoparticles.

We report the ability of amino- and carboxyl-modified MCM-41 mesoporous silica nanoparticles (MSN) to deliver gene in vivo in rat Achilles tendons, despite their inefficiency to transfect primary tenocytes in culture. We show that luciferase activity lasted for at least 2 weeks in tendons injected with these MSN and a plasmid DNA (pDNA) encoding the luciferase reporter gene. By contrast, in tendons injected with naked plasmid, the luciferase expression decreased as a function of time and became hardly detectable after 2 weeks.

Socioeconomic deprivation does not influence the severity of Crohn's disease: Results of a prospective multicenter study.

Background: Socioeconomic deprivation is associated with poor health. The aims of this study were to evaluate the influence of deprivation in the characteristics and comparisons of deprived and nondeprived Crohn's disease (CD) patients.

Methods: CD patients were prospectively recruited from September 2006 to June 2007 in 6 hospitals in the Paris area.

[Early failure of anterior bone block in multidirectional shoulder instability: a case report].

We report the case of a 47-year-old female patient who developed predominantly anterior multidirectional glenohumeral instability. After rehabilitation, this patient was treated surgically with an anterior coracoid bone block using the Latarjet technique. The second postoperative day, the control scan revealed posterior glenohumeral dislocation.

Electrical conductivity measurement: a new technique to detect iatrogenic initial pedicle perforation.

Pedicle screw fixation has achieved significant popularity amongst spinal surgeons for both single and multi-level spinal fusion. Misplacement and pedicle cortical violation occurs in over 20% of screw placement and can result in potential complications such as dysthesia, paraparesis or paraplegia. There have been many advances in techniques available for navigating through the pedicle; however, these techniques are not without drawbacks.

Circumferential arthrodesis using PEEK cages at the lumbar spine.

Usual interbody cages at the lumbar spine are made of titanium or carbon fiber-polyetheretherketone (PEEK). Pure PEEK cages have more recently been proposed for its lower elasticity modulus. The goal of our study was to investigate a series of patients with circumferential fixation using anterior PEEK cages for degenerative lumbar spine disorders with a specific interest in the local lordosis.

Transcondylar traction as a closed reduction technique in vertically unstable pelvic ring disruption.

Little information is provided in the literature describing an efficient reduction technique for pelvic ring disruption. The aim of this study is to assess the use of the transcondylar traction as a closed reduction technique for vertically unstable fracture-dislocations of the sacro-iliac joint. Twenty-four pelvic ring disruptions were treated with attempted closed reduction followed by percutaneous screw fixation.

Hip spine relationships: application to total hip arthroplasty.

Lumbo-sacral orientation in the sagittal plane is of utmost importance, as it plays a critical role in the function of the spine and the hip joints. Equilibrium of the trunk influences the tridimensional orientation of the acetabulum and the functional range of motion of the hips. Each patient is characterized by a "morphological" parameter named incidence angle; its sagittal balance is the consequence of a postural adaptation for other functional parameters (pelvic tilt, sacral slope, lumbar lordosis, acetabular sagittal tilt, functional anteversion).

Finite element model of the human neck during omni-directional impacts. Part II: relation between cervical curvature and risk of injury.

A detailed 3D FE model of the human neck was used to assess a possible relationship between risk of injury and cervical spine curvature for various impacts. A FE model was previously developed, representing the head and neck of a 50th percentile human with a normal lordotic curvature. The model behaviour was omni-directionally validated for various impacts using published results.

Wedge osteotomy for treating post-traumatic kyphosis at thoracolumbar and lumbar levels.

Local post-traumatic kyphosis may impair spinal sagittal balance and result in severe disability. The goal of this study is to evaluate posterior closing wedge osteotomy at the level of injury, by comparing thoracolumbar (T12-L1) and lumbar (L2-4) spinal levels. Thirteen consecutive patients had surgery in an average 13 months after the initial injury.

Evaluation of the 96/4 PLDLLA polymer resorbable lumbar interbody cage in a long term animal model.

Arthrodesis using interbody cages has demonstrated high fusion rates. However, permanent cages are exposed to stress-shielding, corrosion, and may require explanation when necessary. Polylactic acid (PLA) bioresorbable cages are developed for avoiding these problems, but significant tissue reaction has been reported with 70/30 PLDLLA in some preclinical animal studies.

Two-stage surgical procedure for treating pelvic malunions.

When surgically treated, pelvic-ring deformities due to post-traumatic malunions in adults usually require invasive three-stage (prone/supine/prone or supine/prone/supine) procedures. A standardised two-stage prone/supine procedure was developed by the authors. Technical points and first clinical results are presented.

In France, about 2000 people suffer spinal cord injuries each year. Most patients are young men involved in road accidents and most have cervical lesions. Emergency pre-hospital care is crucial, as the lesions are potentially life-threatening and can have devastating functional consequences.

The mini-invasive anterior extra peritoneal approach to the pelvis.

Retroperitoneal pelvic tumours are rare and their surgical approach is challenging. Various surgical approaches have been proposed. We present here an original mini-invasive anterior retroperitoneal approach the pelvic retroperitoneum, which was successful in a 26-year-old woman who had a benign schwannoma of the left sacral plexus.

[Sequelae of intra-articular calcaneal fractures: patterns and management].

Purpose Of The Study: We reviewed retrospectively 24 feet with sequelae of transtalar process fractures of the calcaneum in order to identify the lesion pattern and determine optimal management options, both for acute and sequelar lesions.

Material And Methods: There were fourteen men and nine women, mean age 42 years (19-73). Twenty-three had subtalar osteoarthritis, eight had calcaneocuboid osteoarthritis, and fifteen had lateral submalleolar conflicts.

Massive Gorham-Stout syndrome of the pelvis.

Gorham-Stout disease is defined as a spontaneous, massive, and nonfamilial idiopathic osteolysis. The diagnosis is based essentially on radiological and histological findings. Biopsy reviews always reveal excessive intraosseous nonmalignant proliferation of small vessels, which results in bone resorption and may extend to adjacent bones and soft tissues.

Variations of caudal, central, and cranial acetabular anteversion according to the tilt of the pelvis.

Variations of acetabular anteversion measured at the level of the diameter of the acetabulum according to the tilt of the pelvis are known. But the values of this anteversion at other levels of the acetabulum, near the roof or near the obturator foramen, are unknown. Attracted by the very changeable morphology of the acetabular cover, we studied the caudal, central, and cranial acetabular anteversion of 12 pelvises in four positions of dorsal-ventral inclination.

Metachronous multicentric giant-cell tumor of the bone in the lower limb. Case report and Ki-67 immunohistochemistry study.

Multicentric giant-cell tumors of the bone (GCTs) are rare. Little is known about the mechanisms by which these tumors spread and how 1% of GCT turn out to be multicentric. We report the case of a 19-year-old woman with metachronous multiple and recurrent GCTs that were unusual in their pattern of progression along the right lower limb over a 23-year period.

Predictors of outcomes after posterior decompression and fusion in degenerative spondylolisthesis.

No consensus has been reached regarding surgical management of degenerative spondylolisthesis. The optimal type of surgical procedure and surgical indications have not been precisely defined. In order to screen for predictors of outcome, we retrospectively studied patient outcomes after posterior decompression and fusion for isolated lumbar degenerative spondylolisthesis.

Hip-spine relationship: a radio-anatomical study for optimization in acetabular cup positioning.

The criteria for acetabular cup positioning during total hip replacement are a matter of considerable discussion, particularly with regards to the optimal degree of anteversion. "Anatomical anteversion" is defined in the transverse plane, and "surgical anteversion" in the sagittal plane. Computed tomography measurements of anteversion are characteristic of a given transverse section plane and fail to take into account the position of the pelvis.

Ipsilateral fibular transposition in tibial nonunion using Huntington procedure: a 12-year follow-up study.

Eleven patients (10 men and 1 woman) with a mean age of 32 years (range: 16-61 years) and a mean follow-up of 12 years (range: 2-21 years) were studied retrospectively after ipsilateral fibular transposition. The cause of tibial nonunion was a motor vehicle collision (MVC) in eight patients, a fall from a window in one, an adamantinoma in one, and osteomyelitis in one. There was one type I and eight type IIIb open fractures according to the Gustilo classification, and the nonunion was infected in seven patients.

Chronic compartment syndrome of the forearm in competitive motor cyclists: a report of two cases.

Exertional compartment syndrome of the forearm is rare. However, it should be considered in cases of a painful forearm during motorcycle racing. Pressure measurements of all compartments during exercises that simulate the actions of racing confirm the diagnosis.
