Evidence is needed in low- and middle-income countries regarding men's willingness to use new male contraceptive methods in development, preferences regarding method attributes, and what shapes willingness/preferences. We analyzed data from cross-sectional surveys with 611 men in Malawi, concerning willingness to use each of four types of new male methods. Mean age was 24.

The balance between metal deficiency and excess is typically ensured by several extracellular and intracellular mechanisms involved in uptake, distribution, and excretion. However, provoked by either intrinsic or extrinsic factors, excess iron, zinc, copper, or manganese can lead to cellular damage upon chronic or acute exposure, frequently attributed to oxidative stress.

In contrast, in the gastrointestinal tract, responsible for dietary Cu uptake, ATP7B malfunction is poorly explored. We therefore investigated gut biopsies from WD patients and compared intestines from two rodent WD models and from human ATP7B knock-out intestinal cells to their respective wild-type controls.

However, this dependence comes at a considerable price to ensure target-oriented copper action. Thereto its uptake, distribution but also excretion are executed by specialized proteins with high affinity for the transition metal.

The diruthenium catalysts self-assembled to generate -symmetric bowl-shaped structures in an analogous manner to their dirhodium counterparts. The optimum catalyst was found to be Ru(-TPPTTL)·BAr [-TPPTTL = ()-2-(1,3-dioxo-4,5,6,7-tetraphenylisoindolin-2-yl)-3,3-dimethylbutanoate, BAr = tetrakis(3,5-bis(trifluoromethyl)phenyl)borate], which resulted in the cyclopropanation of a range of substrates in up to 94% ee.

In this paper, we estimate the potential market size in India for the progesterone vaginal ring (PVR), a novel user-controlled contraceptive method that offers additional contraceptive choice for lactating women. We integrated results of a one-year phase-3 multicenter clinical trial for the PVR conducted in India with an analysis of the National Family Health Survey (2015-16) and 2019 United Nations Population Division data to generate three estimates of potential market size for the PVR among postpartum breastfeeding women in India.

Methods: Thirty-nine subjects underwent maximal CPET at lowlands and during ascent to Mount Himlung Himal (7126 m) at 4844 m, before and after 12 days of acclimatisation, and at 6022 m. Daily records of Lake-Louise-Score (LLS) determined AMS.
Aiming to fill a gap in the literature, we aimed to identify the most promising EOs blocking in vitro cellular entry of SARS-CoV-2 delta variant without conferring human cytotoxicity and provide insights into the influence of their composition on these activities. Twelve EOs were characterized by gas chromatography coupled to mass spectrometry. The antiviral and cytotoxicity activities were determined using the cell-based pseudoviral entry with SARS-CoV-2 delta pseudovirus and the XTT assay in HeLa cells expressing human angiotensin-converting enzyme 2 (HeLa ACE-2), respectively.

Methods: A questionnaire of 20 items was sent to 192 patients with meningioma of the skull base who have been treated with proton therapy at a single institution.
Lectins are proteins with a remarkably high affinity and specificity for carbohydrates. Many organisms naturally produce them, including animals, plants, fungi, protists, bacteria, archaea, and viruses. The present report focuses on lectins produced by marine or freshwater organisms, in particular algae and cyanobacteria.

It is essential to identify broad-spectrum antiviral agents that may prevent or treat infections by severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) but also by other coronaviruses that may jump the species barrier in the future. We evaluated the antiviral selectivity of griffithsin and sulfated and non-sulfated polysaccharides against SARS-CoV-1 and SARS-CoV-2 using a cytotoxicity assay and a cell-based pseudoviral model.

Critical to combatting this crisis is the expansion of healthcare to include self-care approaches to de-medicalize contraception and increase an individual's agency in determining what method they use, when they use it, and where they obtain it. Expanding the mix of self-administered contraceptives is essential for ensuring choice, access, and availability.

The B-components facilitate receptor-mediated uptake into mammalian cells and form pores into endosomal membranes through which the enzymatic active A-components translocate into the cytosol. Here, the A-components ADP-ribosylate G-actin which leads to F-actin depolymerization followed by rounding of cells which causes clinical symptoms.

Abstract: Alpine conifers growing at high elevation are exposed to low temperatures, which may limit xylogenesis and cause pronounced seasonal changes in tree hydraulics.
Introduction: Uptake of oral pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) remains low. The objective of this analysis was to estimate the potential market size in priority sub-Saharan African countries for a 28-day dual prevention pill (DPP) regimen containing the active pharmaceutical ingredients in oral PrEP and oral contraceptive pills (OCPs) for the prevention of HIV and unintended pregnancy.
Methods: We selected 15 countries in sub-Saharan Africa for analysis.
While the contributions of science, biomedicine, and engineering to contraceptive development offer wonder and promise to the community, what inspires many of us in the not-for-profit sector about the process of contraceptive product development is the integration of consultations with users, providers and policy makers, good clinical and manufacturing practice in product design and development, and the delivery of approved products at affordable prices to those in greatest need. The commitment to have an impact on the reproductive lives of women and men along with the ethical principles embedded in this process of achieving safe, effective, and acceptable options include the respect for persons, i.e.

Electrical resistivity (ER) tomography represents a promising and innovative approach, as it allows insights into living trees based on ER levels and ER cross-sectional distribution patterns of stems. However, it is poorly understood how external factors, such as temperature, tree water status, and electrode installation affect ER tomograms.

The π-conjugated, TTz-bridged compounds are synthesized via a single-step, double condensation/oxidation of dithiooxamide and two different aromatic aldehydes: one with strong electron-donating characteristics and one with strong electron-accepting characteristics. The four reported dyes include electron-donating moieties (,-dibutylaniline and ,-diphenylaniline) matched with three different electron-accepting moieties (pyridine, benzoic acid, and carboxaldehyde).
