To counter economic terrorism by preventing counterfeit currency, documents and high-value commercial products, new-generation security inks with multiple safety features are required. Herein, color-tunable pyrylium and pyridinium dye-encapsulated polymethyl methacrylate (PMMA) colloidal microspheres are reported to exhibiting brilliant emission and photonic properties. A combination of the PMMA colloidal photonic ink having structural color variation and the dye-encapsulated colloidal photonic ink with fluorescence modulation is used for security labeling.

Background: Recommendations for cardiac surgery advocate for antibiotic prophylaxis for up to 48 hour after surgery. However, recent reports found a significant reduction in surgical site infection with extended duration. We evaluated the effect of the type of prophylactic antibiotics and administration durations on the postoperative surgical site infection rate following cardiac surgery in adults.

Article Synopsis
  • - The Internet of Medical Things (IoMT) has enhanced healthcare by linking medical devices and patients, but it raises privacy concerns due to the vulnerability of sensitive data to security threats.
  • - The paper introduces a Timestamp-based Secret Key Generation (T-SKG) scheme that creates secret keys directly on patient devices and regenerates them on doctors' devices, reducing the risk of key compromise.
  • - Simulation results show that T-SKG provides strong security against various attacks, with only a 9% chance of key compromise in guessing attacks, while also utilizing the Data Encryption Standard (DES) for data encryption in transmitting health vitals.

The concept of the vitamin D response index was developed based on vitamin D intervention studies conducted with Finnish cohorts. In this study, we challenged the concept by performing a single vitamin D bolus (80,000 IU) intervention with a cohort of 100 native Saudis. The change of serum levels of the proinflammatory cytokines interleukin 6, interleukin 8 and tumor necrosis factor measured directly before intervention in comparison to samples taken one and thirty days after vitamin D supplementation were used as biomarkers for distinguishing low, mid and high responders.

Background: Recognizing and identifying latent safety threats (LSTs) before patient care commences is crucial, aiding leaders in ensuring hospital readiness and extending its impact beyond patient safety alone. This study evaluated the effectiveness of a combination of Simulation-based Clinical Systems Testing (SbCST) with Healthcare Failure Mode and Effect Analysis (HFMEA) with regard to mitigating LSTs within a newly constructed hospital.

Methods: Three phases of the combined SbCST and HFMEA approach were implemented across all hospital settings.

Background: Early-onset neonatal sepsis (EONS) remains an important disease entity due to very serious adverse outcomes if left untreated. Lack of diagnostic tools in identifying healthy from diseased neonates, and clinicians' fear of the missing positive-culture sepsis babies, or babies with clinical sepsis have led to overtreating and unnecessary antibiotic exposure. Kaiser Permanente EONS risk calculator is an internally validated tool that can predict EONS.
