Thymic involution is a key factor in human immune aging, leading to reduced thymic output and a decline in recent thymic emigrant (RTE) naive T cells in circulation. Currently, the precise definition of human RTEs and their corresponding cell surface markers lacks clarity. Analysis of single-cell RNA-seq/ATAC-seq data distinguished RTEs by the expression of SOX4, IKZF2, and TOX and CD38 protein, whereby surface CD38 expression universally identified CD8 and CD4 RTEs.

Introduction: Non-high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (non-HDL-C) levels can increase the cardiometabolic risk factors in patients with hypothyroidism, but the findings across studies have not been consistently conclusive. The aim of this study was to find the association between non-HDL-C and cardiometabolic risk factors in patients with hypothyroidism.

Material And Methods: In this case-control study, a total of 120 subjects among which 60 diagnosed hypothyroidism patients and 60 age-matched healthy controls were enrolled, aged 30-65 years.

Quadricuspid aortic valve (QAV), a rare congenital cardiac anomaly, often presents with aortic regurgitation and can lead to significant cardiovascular complications. This case report describes a 55-year-old male with a history of subarachnoid hemorrhage who was incidentally found to have QAV with possible endocarditis. Transesophageal echocardiography revealed thickened leaflet tips on all four cusps and a mass on one leaflet, raising suspicion of endocarditis despite the absence of vegetation.

Cryptosporidium is one of the most important protozoan parasitic pathogens, and it is a common cause of diarrhoea in humans, domestic animals, and wild vertebrates and has serious public health threats. A cross-sectional study was designed to determine the prevalence of Cryptosporidium oocysts in raw-eaten vegetables in Maiduguri Metropolitan Council (MMC) and Jere Local Government Areas (LGAs). A total of 400 samples were collected from four (4) different locations, namely Tashan Bama, Gomboru, and Monday Markets (n = 100), while fifty (n = 50) each from 202-Vegetable-Vendors and Unimaid Commercials.

Introduction: Computed tomography urography (CTU) comprehensively evaluates the urinary tract. However, the procedure is associated with a high radiation dose due to multiple scan series and therefore requires optimisation. The study performed CTU protocol optimisation based on a reduction in tube voltage (kV) using quality assurance (QA) phantom and clinical images and evaluated image quality and radiation dose.

Background: RASGRP1-deficiency results in an immune dysregulation and immunodeficiency that manifest as autoimmunity, lymphoproliferation, lymphopenia, defective T cell function, and increased incidence of Epstein-Bar Virus infections and lymphomas.

Objective: To investigate the mechanism of autoimmune hemolytic anemia and infections in a male patient of consanguineous parents from Lebanon.

Methods: Genetic diagnosis was obtained using next generation and Sanger sequencing.

Article Synopsis
  • The study investigates a patient with severe immune-related symptoms, including bleeding episodes and pneumonia, to determine the genetic factors contributing to their condition.
  • Genetic analysis revealed two deletions in STX11 linked to certain immune disorders, alongside a novel mutation in SLP76 that significantly reduced its protein levels and T-cell function.
  • The findings suggest that the mutation in SLP76 mitigates inflammation caused by STX11 defects, leading to a unique combined immunodeficiency, highlighting the complex interactions between multiple genetic mutations in immune diseases.

Background: Adaptable cardiopulmonary resuscitation/basic life support (CPR/BLS) training are required to reduce cardiac arrest mortality globally, especially among nurses. Thus, this study aims to compared CPR knowledge and skills retention level between instructor-led (control group) and video self-instruction training (intervention group) among nurses in northwestern Nigeria.

Methods: A two-arm randomized controlled trial study using double blinding method was conducted with 150 nurses from two referral hospitals.

Article Synopsis
  • Tuberculosis (TB) remains a significant health challenge for children in Nigeria, and this study focuses on the effectiveness of the Xpert MTB/RIF test for diagnosing TB in children aged 0-15 years from 2017 to 2021.
  • Out of 1,489 children treated, the analysis of data from 1,463 showed that the Xpert MTB/RIF test was performed on 862, revealing a detection rate of 19.8% for MTB, with a small percentage indicating rifampicin (RIF) resistance.
  • Key factors associated with positive test results included older age (over 10 years), the presence of pulmonary TB, and a negative HIV status, highlighting the importance of thorough clinical

Background: HPV 16 is the primary etiologic agent of cervical cancer and the presence of L1 and E6 oncoproteins are largely responsible for its virulence. It was the objective of this study to identify HPV16 isolates from suspected cases of cervical cancer at Specialist Hospital Sokoto and Sir Yahaya Memorail Hospiatal Birnin Kebbi, Nigeria and also to identify potent HPV16's L1 protein inhibitor using in silico analysis.

Methods: A total of 144 cervical samples consisting of 21 low grade squamous intraepithelial lesion, 6 high grade lesion and 117 negative pap smears were collected.

Rift Valley fever (RVF) is an emerging mosquito-borne zoonosis that threatens public health and animal agriculture in the endemic areas causing devastating epizootics characterized by abortion storms and high mortalities, especially in newborn animals. A cross-sectional study was conducted to determine the seroprevalence and investigate risk factors associated with exposure to the virus in camels slaughtered in Maiduguri abattoir, Borno State of Nigeria. Camels presented for slaughtered were sampled and data on age, sex, source or origin, utility, presence of post-mortem lesions, body weights and body condition score were collected.

Brucellosis caused by facultative intracellular bacteria, Brucella, remains a global threat to both animal and human health. In this study we aimed to identify potential risk factors of bovine brucellosis and to assess the knowledge, attitudes, and practices (KAPs) of livestock keepers in Hisar, India. A standardized questionnaire was used to collate information regarding potential risk factors of bovine brucellosis and livestock owners' KAPs.
