Training Physicians in the Digital Health Era: How to Leverage the Residency Elective.

Digital health is an expanding field and is fundamentally changing the ways health care can be delivered to patients. Despite the changing landscape of health care delivery, medical trainees are not routinely exposed to digital health during training. In this viewpoint, we argue that thoughtfully implemented immersive elective internships with digital health organizations, including start-ups, during residency are valuable for residents, residency programs, and digital health companies.

Early Peanut Introduction and Testing: A Framework for General Pediatrician Beliefs and Practices.

Peanut introduction guidelines have undergone significant reversal since 2001 from recommending delayed introduction to rescinding the recommendations in 2008 to actively recommending early introduction of peanut between 4 and 11 months of age in high-risk infants in 2015. This qualitative study aims to explore pediatrician beliefs, practices, facilitators, and barriers regarding peanut introduction and testing. General pediatricians from academic, private, large group, and underserved practices in Northern California underwent individual semi-structured interviews in 2017.

Patient-Centered Anesthesia Triage System Predicts ASA Physical Status.

Background: The purpose of this study was to validate a patient-centered anesthesia triage system (PCATS) by examining its association with, and predictive value of, ASA physical status (PS) classification. ASA PS classification is a widely used indicator of health status and the predictor of risk of perioperative complications. Thus, ASA PS is a good triage point such that healthy surgical patients (ASA PS I and II) undergoing low-complexity surgery are assessed by telephone, whereas less-healthy patients (ASA PS III and IV) or those patients undergoing highly complex surgery are seen in person at a presurgical clinic.

Safety Culture in Indian Hospitals: A Cultural Adaptation of the Safety Attitudes Questionnaire.

Objectives: Patient safety is increasingly recognized as a global health concern because of a staggering number of health care-related injuries and deaths. Although many hospitals are attempting to promote a patient safety agenda, there are relatively few options to track progress. The aims of this study were to translate and culturally adapt the Safety Attitudes Questionnaire (SAQ) into Gujarati and to provide evidence for its reliability and validity in hospitals in Gujarat, India.

Large and giant paraclinoid aneurysms are challenging to treat by either surgical or endovascular means. Visual dysfunction secondary to optic nerve compression and its relationship with aneurysm size, pulsation and thrombosis is poorly understood. We present a patient with a giant paraclinoid aneurysm resulting in bilateral visual loss that worsened following placement of a Pipeline Embolization Device and adjunctive coiling.
