Hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) is the third foremost cause of cancer-related deaths. HCC has a very bad prognosis because it is asymptomatic in the early stages, resulting in a late diagnosis, and it is highly resistant to conventional chemotherapy. Such chemotherapies have been proven disappointing because they provide extremely low survival benefits.

Ulcerative colitis (UC) is a chronic inflammatory life-threatening and premalignant disorder with no cure that even might end up with surgical removal of a large section or even all of the colon. It is characterized by relapsing-remitting courses of intestinal inflammation and mucosal damage in which oxidative stress and exaggerated inflammatory response play a significant role. Most of the current medications to maintain remission are symptomatic and have many adverse reactions.

Advanced glycation end products (AGEs) were found to be involved in the pathogenesis of various disorders. Chronic hepatitis C virus infection is the major cause of liver cirrhosis development and glucose metabolism alteration. We aimed to explore the association of AGEs with the development of diabetes mellitus (DM) in patients with cirrhosis in this study.

Background And Objective: Spontaneous bacterial peritonitis (SBP) is a common bacterial infection with life-threatening sequelae in cirrhotic ascites. The purpose of this retrospective cohort study was to recognize the predictors of SBP to build up a noninvasive system to exclude or establish an episode of SBP.

Patients And Methods: Of 1194 consecutive patients with cirrhotic ascites, only 966 patients were enrolled in this study.

Background And Objectives: The response to immunosuppressive therapy in autoimmune hepatitis (AIH) is a matter of debate. The aim of this work is to identify the histological, biochemical, and clinical predictive factors of incomplete response/treatment failure to the standard treatment (prednisone with or without azathioprine) in a well-characterized series of AIH Egyptian patients.

Patients And Methods: Of 49 AIH patients, only 36 patients completed this retrospective cohort study.

Cytochrome P450 1A1 (CYP1A1) and Glutathione S-transferase P1 (GSTP1) genes are involved in the metabolism of many carcinogens. Polymorphisms in these genes with altered enzyme activity have been reported. The present study evaluated the synergistic effect between CYP1A1 and GSTP1 gene polymorphisms and smoking on development of HCV-related liver disease and hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC).

Objective: To document Toxoplasma gondii (T. gondii) antibody status in patients with liver disease, blood samples were taken from 180 hepatic patients and 180 healthy controls.

Methods: Toxoplasma IgG antibody was detected using enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay and histopathological assessment of liver biopsy METAVIR score was applied.

The increasing prevalence of multidrug-resistant and pan drug-resistant Acinetobacter baumannii as a cause of nosocomial infections has led to the need for the reassessment of novel combinations of antibiotics as our only current viable option for handling such infections until a new therapeutic option becomes available. Two of the most commonly used methods for testing antimicrobial synergy are the Time-kill assay method and the E-test method, and these were the methods used in this study. Antibiotic combinations tested in this study were azithromycin and polymyxin, tobramycin and polymyxin, polymyxin and rifampicin, and tobramycin and rifampicin.
