Purpose Of Review: One of the most common diseases of the tympanic membrane is a perforation, and tympanoplasty is one of the more common procedures in otolaryngology. Tympanic membrane regeneration and bioengineering aim to improve the success rate of the procedure, increase the availability of different scaffolds and provide innovative tools that will simplify the surgical technique and make it accessible for surgeons with varying expertise level. This review aims to raise awareness of current tissue engineering developments in tympanic membrane regeneration and how they may augment current clinical practices.

Microsurgical free flaps are common in head and neck reconstruction, and their techniques and outcomes have continuously improved during the past decades. However, there are variations in practice among surgeons between the use of closed-suction drainage systems and Penrose drains. The proponents of Penrose drains propose that the negative pressure generated by the closed-suction drainage system may harm the microvascular anastomosis.

Article Synopsis
  • - The study reviewed awake tracheostomy (AT), a procedure for securing airways in patients with upper airway obstructions when other methods fail, based on data from two university-affiliated medical centers between 2010 and 2016.
  • - Out of 1023 tracheostomies, 37 were ATs, primarily due to head and neck malignancies, with the average patient age being 60.3 years and the majority being male; non-oncologic patients were younger and required more urgent interventions.
  • - The findings revealed a 97.3% immediate survival rate for AT, with a 5.4% risk of significant complications and a 2.7% mortality rate, emphasizing

Introduction: Early diagnosis of acute invasive fungal rhinosinusitis (AIFR) is crucial for patients prognosis and may reduce the extent of surgical debridement. Initial evaluation usually includes paranasal Computed Tomography (CT), with an emphasis on bony erosion which is considered a specific but insensitive radiologic sign. Most studies made no distinction between Aspergillus and Mucor species while addressing CT findings.

Background: AIFM1 encodes a mitochondrial flavoprotein with a dual role (NADH oxidoreductase and regulator of apoptosis), which uses riboflavin as a cofactor. Mutations in the X-linked AIFM1 were reported in relation to two main phenotypes: a severe infantile mitochondrial encephalomyopathy and an early-onset axonal sensorimotor neuropathy with hearing loss. In this paper we report two unrelated males harboring AIFM1 mutations (one of which is novel) who display distinct phenotypes including progressive ataxia which partially improved with riboflavin treatment.
