Audience segmentation is necessary in health communications to ensure equitable resource distribution. Peer crowds, which are macro-level teen subcultures, are effective psychographic segments for health communications because each crowd has unique mindsets, values, norms, and health behavior profiles. These mindsets affect behaviors, and can be used to develop targeted health communication campaigns to reach those in greatest need.

Therapeutic proteins including monoclonal antibodies (mAbs) are usually produced in engineered host cell lines that also produce thousands of endogenous proteins at varying levels. A critical aspect of the development of biotherapeutics manufacturing processes is the removal of these host cell proteins (HCP) to appropriate levels in order to minimize risk to patient safety and drug efficacy. During the development process and associated analytical characterization, mass spectrometry (MS) has become an increasingly popular tool for HCP analysis due to its ability to provide both relative abundance and identity of individual HCP and because the method does not rely on polyclonal antibodies, which are used in enzyme-linked immunosorbent assays.

Background: Peer crowds are macro-level, reputation-based subcultures with shared preferences, values, and behavior. The Country peer crowd has been the focus of tobacco industry research and marketing but has yet to be the primary focus of public health research. The current study explores the utility of Down and Dirty, a Social Branding tobacco education campaign, in changing Virginia Country teens' chewing tobacco-related attitudes and behavior.

Purpose: Peer crowds are macro-level subcultures that share similarities across geographic areas. Over the past decade, dozens of studies have explored the association between adolescent peer crowds and risk behaviors, and how they can inform public health efforts. However, despite the interest, researchers have not yet reported on crowd size and risk levels from a representative sample, making it difficult for practitioners to apply peer crowd science to interventions.

Objective: Pediatric periorbital cellulitis represents a common disease complicating a nasal infection.

Methods: A ten-year retrospective review of fifty-seven children admitted to our institution with the diagnosis of periorbital cellulitis as a complication of sinus infections was carried out.

Results: The age varied from one month to eleven years (mean 3.

Objective: To evaluate the accuracy of the intraoperative parathyroid hormone (ioPTH) and 6-hour PTH (6hPTH) assay in predicting transient hypoparathyroidism after thyroidectomy.

Study Design: A nonrandomized prospective study was conducted on patients undergoing thyroid surgery.

Subjects And Methods: Of 138 patients undergoing thyroid surgery, intraoperative PTH was measured 10 minutes after gland removal.

Recent investigations have implicated aberrant glycosylations in various malignancies, including epithelial ovarian cancer (EOC). The protocol here identifies O-linked carbohydrate patterns in EOC plasma glycoproteins through chemical cleavage and purification of these glycans. Dialyzed plasma is subjected to reductive beta-elimination with alkaline borohydride to release O-linked oligosaccharides from glycoproteins.

Posttranslational modifications such as glycosylation can play a fundamental role in signaling pathways that transform an ordinary cell into a malignant one. The development of a protocol to detect these changes in the preliminary stages of disease can lead to a sensitive and specific diagnostic for the early detection of malignancies such as ovarian cancer in which differential glycan patterns are linked to etiology and progression. Small variations in instrument parameters and sample preparation techniques are known to have significant influence on the outcome of an experiment.

Cancer research in recent years has immensely benefited from the development of novel technologies that enable scientists to perform detailed investigations of genomes, transcriptomes, proteomes, and metabolomes. This has invariably furthered knowledge of tumorigenesis and etiology of cancer. The resulting information can, in the foreseeable future, effect a significant change in the pace of cancer research, thereby producing improvements in patient care.

Sample preparation techniques for carbohydrate analysis using matrix-assisted laser desorption/ionization mass spectrometry (MALDI-MS) are explored, with particular emphasis on analyte/matrix co-crystallization procedures. While carbohydrates are known to prefer 2,5-dihydroxybenzoic acid (2,5-DHB) as the matrix of choice, these analytes are quite specific about matrix crystal structure, which in turn is dependent on the rate of drying of analyte/matrix spots on the MALDI target. With N-acetylglucosamine (GlcNAc) and N-acetylneuraminic acid (sialic acid or NeuAc) as test monosaccharides, significant increases in ion abundances are demonstrated with 2,5-DHB/NeuAc spots (>10-fold improvement) and 2,5-DHB/GlcNAc spots ( approximately 5-fold improvement) with active drying.

We evaluated the differentially expressed proteins in the plasma of ovarian cancer (OVC) patients using 2-D SDS-polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis (SDS-PAGE) with post-translational modification (PTM) specific stains after the removal of six high-abundance proteins. The pooled plasma from patients with stage III or IV OVC was compared to a pooled postmenopausal age-matched control. Several proteins were identified as differentially expressed in the plasma of OVC patients.

Foreign body aspiration can produce serious pulmonary diseases. Timely diagnosis and appropriate treatment is important to prevent long-term complications in affected children. We report the case of a 15-month-old child with a 5-month history of regurgitation, vomiting, recurrent tracheobronchitis, and pneumonia.

We reviewed a series of 45 patients affected by nontuberculous mycobacterial adenitis of the neck observed in the Ear, Nose, and Throat Institute of S. Orsola-Malpighi Hospital-Bologna over a 20-year period between 1981 and 2001. The mean age was 5.

This report outlines the effectiveness of the transnasal endoscopic approach for the treatment of congenital choanal atresia. Fourteen patients with age between 5 days and 15 years were treated using this approach by means of 0 and 30 degrees 4 or 2.7 mm telescopes: three cases were bilateral while 11 were unilateral.

Objective: We describe an unusual case of ectopic TSH-secreting pituitary adenoma arising from the vomerosphenoidal junction.

Clinical Presentation: A 52-Year-old man with a long-standing history of hyperthyroidism was referred to the University Hospital in September 2001 because of increasingly disabling symptoms of nasal obstruction. For the past 18 Years the patient had complained of palpitations, hypertension, weight loss, and nervousness.

Ectopic cervical thymic tissue is rarely reported in medical literature, but it should be included in the differential diagnosis of neck masses, especially in children. The authors present the case of a young male with a soft right mid-cervical mass. The patient underwent complete excision of the lesion and histological examination showed an ectopic thymic cyst.

Contralateral ear pathologies are frequently found in patients suffering from acquired cholesteatoma. A retrospective study was performed on 85 pediatric patients and 105 adults surgically treated for acquired middle ear cholesteatoma. All the patients were checked and the otomicroscopic picture photographed and compared in an attempt to gain insight into the pathogenesis and clinical indications by comparing two samplings from different age groups.

In the absence of a satisfactory interpretation, sudden sensorineural hearing loss is often attributed either to infective phenomena or to organic-type circulatory defects. This latter pathogenesis inevitably comes to mind in elderly patients or in the presence of signs of circulatory dysfunction. Nevertheless, the not-infrequent observation of sudden hearing loss in young persons lacking factors predictive of short-term vascular impairment makes us suppose the existence of etiopathogenetic mechanisms of a functional nature.

The generic term 'sudden hearing loss' indicates the lack of knowledge about the etiology and pathogenesis of this phenomenon. In most cases it would seem feasible to consider infections or organic circulatory defects, but there are cases, generally affecting young subjects in whom the damage is often reversible, in which a functional origin is possible. We therefore investigated the possible effect of systemic arterial pressure in a retrospective study in a group of 36 patients aged not more than 40 years, treated for sudden hearing loss, comparing the mean values of their arterial pressure with those of a control group of 25 subjects, of similar age, admitted for other disorders.
