Medication adherence and associated factors in newly diagnosed hypertensive patients in Japan: the LIFE study.

Hypertension is the leading cardiovascular risk factor worldwide. However, in Japan, only 30% of patients have their blood pressure controlled under 140/90 mmHg, and nonadherence to antihypertensives is thought to be a reason for the poor control of hypertension. We therefore sought to assess the adherence to hypertension treatment and to evaluate factors influencing patients' adherence in a large, representative sample of the Japanese population.

The effects of exposure to O- and HOCl-nanobubble water on human salivary microbiota.

Nanobubbles of gas remain dissolved in water for longer periods than ordinary bubbles, and exhibit unique physicochemical and biological properties. As a result, nanobubble water (NBW) is finding widespread use many applications, such as cleaning in the industry and purification of lake water. The ozone NBW (O-NBW), in particular, has been used in clinical dentistry; however, it has several disadvantages, including the instability of ozone, which is spontaneously converted to molecular oxygen (O to O), and its broad range of antibacterial activity, which can disrupt the oral microbiota.

The influenza virus has been known as a representative infectious virus that harms human health from the past to the present day. We have promoted the development of a novel adsorbent capable of adsorbing influenza viruses in the form of aerosols in the air. In this study, to develop a material to adsorb the influenza virus, a functional group was introduced into a microfiber nonwoven fabric (MNWF) manufactured through radiation-induced graft polymerization (RIGP), and sialic acid was immobilized to mimic the sugar chain cluster effect.

Association Between Dose and Plasma Concentration of Bisoprolol in Patients with Heart Failure (CVI ARO 6).

Although bisoprolol is used widely to treat patients with heart failure (HF), little information is available regarding the association between the dose of bisoprolol administered and the bisoprolol plasma concentration (Bis-PC) in real-world clinical practice.This was a single-center, observational study in 114 patients with HF receiving once-daily bisoprolol. After determination of trough Bis-PC, the relationship between the dose of bisoprolol and Bis-PC was analyzed.

Displacement ventilation with radiant panel for hospital wards: Measurement and prediction of the temperature and contaminant concentration profiles.

Displacement ventilation (DV) is known to provide high air quality and ventilation efficiency. With DV, a contaminant interface is formed in a room, and the air quality in the occupant zone below the contaminant interface height can be kept clean. This paper proposes a DV system to solve the serious odor problem in hospital wards.

Hypoalbuminemia for the prediction of venous thromboembolism and treatment of direct oral anticoagulants in metastatic gastric cancer patients.

Background: Venous thromboembolism (VTE) is highly associated with advanced gastric cancer (AGC) and is sometimes lethal. Predictors of VTE have not been identified, and the efficacy and safety of direct oral anticoagulants (DOACs) for AGC-associated VTE remain to be clarified.

Methods: A total of 188 AGC patients who started chemotherapy during the period from January 2014 to December 2017 in our institutions were retrospectively examined for the incidence of VTE, risk factors for VTE, and the efficacy and safety of DOAC-based anticoagulant therapy for VTE.

Impact of electrophysiological and pharmacological noninducibility following pulmonary vein isolation in patients with paroxysmal and persistent atrial fibrillation.

Background: Two methods for testing inducibility of atrial fibrillation (AF)-atrial pacing and isoproterenol infusion-have been proposed to determine the endpoint of catheter ablation. However, the utility of the combination for testing electrophysiological inducibility (EPI) and pharmacological inducibility (PHI) is unclear.

Methods: After pulmonary vein isolation (PVI), inducibility of atrial tachyarrhythmia was assessed with the dual methods in 291 consecutive patients with AF (65% paroxysmal) undergoing initial catheter ablation.

The liquid biopsy of ascites fluid could be an excellent source of tumor and microenvironment for the study of prognostic biomarkers because of its accessibility. An analysis on distribution and inter-relationships of biomarkers under rivaroxaban in Japanese patients with non-valvular atrial fibrillation (CVI ARO 1).

Prothrombin time (PT) has been widely used for measuring anticoagulation intensity under rivaroxaban therapy, but precise information has not been well established yet. Consecutive 96 non-valvular atrial fibrillation (NVAF) under rivaroxaban between Jan/June, 2015 were recruited. A 'catch and release' strategy towards HPLC-free purification of synthetic oligonucleotides by a combination of the strain-promoted alkyne-azide cycloaddition and the photocleavage.

A convenient strategy to purify oligonucleotides (ONs) synthesized by solid phase synthesis on an automatic DNA/RNA synthesizer was described. By attaching a photocleavable azide linker as the last phosphoramidite unit in the ON synthesis, only the desired full-length sequence was 'caught' on a controlled pore glass (CPG) resin possessing an aza-dimethoxycyclooctyne (DIBAC) derivative. Washing the resulting CPG resin to remove all unbounded species, the subsequent photoirradiation allowed the pure ONs to be 'released' without leaving any chemical modifications on native ON structure or chemical reagents from the solid phase ON synthesis.

Systemic chemotherapy with pronounced efficacy and neutropenia in a granulocyte-colony stimulating factor-producing advanced gastric neuroendocrine carcinoma.

An advanced granulocyte-colony stimulating factor (G-CSF)-producing tumor is rare, and it exhibits leukocytosis in association with high serum G-CSF levels. A 67-year-old male with a 1-month history of bloody emesis and black stools was revealed to exhibit leukocytosis, anemia and a high serum concentration of G-CSF. During a gastrointestinal endoscopy, an ulcerating tumor was identified in the stomach.

Among these cases, 2,102 NVAF patients were identified.

Predictors of International Normalized Ratio Variability in Patients With Atrial Fibrillation Under Warfarin Therapy.

Background: Variability in the international normalized ratio (INR) of prothrombin time has been suggested to be related to outcome in patients with atrial fibrillation (AF) under warfarin therapy, but its determinants remain unclear.

Methods and results: The study population consisted of 626 AF patients under warfarin therapy in the Shinken Database (n=22,230). INR variability was calculated by Fihn's method.

Pancreatic acinar cell carcinoma presenting with panniculitis, successfully treated with FOLFIRINOX: A case report.

Pancreatic acinar cell carcinoma (PACC) is a rare tumor of the exocrine pancreas, representing only 1% of all pancreatic malignancies. A 50-year-old man presented with edema of the thumb joints bilaterally, followed by an appearance of masses in the bilateral lower extremities and fever (38°C). The masses were diagnosed as panniculitis by skin biopsy, and multiple intraperitoneal masses were incidentally detected on pelvic magnetic resonance imaging performed to investigate the leg abnormalities.

Programmed death-ligand 1 expression is associated with fibrosarcomatous transformation of dermatofibrosarcoma protuberans.

Dermatofibrosarcoma protuberans (DFSP) is a locally invading tumor, characterized by the presence of the collagen type I α 1 ()-platelet-derived growth factor () β fusion gene. We herein report the case of a 31-year-old man with a history of resection of an abdominal wall DFSP. The patient presented with chest pain and a computed tomography scan revealed a large mass in the posterior mediastinum and another mass in the right lung.

Endothelial-mesenchymal transition in human atrial fibrillation.

Background: Atrial fibrosis is a hallmark of atrial structural remodeling leading to the persistence of atrial fibrillation. Although fibroblasts play a major role in atrial fibrosis, their source in the adult atrium is unclear. We tested the hypothesis that endothelial cells contribute to fibroblast accumulation through an endothelial-mesenchymal transition in the atrium of patients with atrial fibrillation.

Impact of BNP level and peak VO on future heart failure events: comparison between sinus rhythm and atrial fibrillation.

This study aimed to examine the discrete impacts of peak oxygen consumption (VO) and brain natriuretic peptide (BNP) levels on future heart failure (HF) events in sinus rhythm (SR) and atrial fibrillation (AF). A total of 1447 patients who underwent symptom-limited cardiopulmonary exercise testing and whose BNP values were determined simultaneously were analysed (SR, N = 1151 and AF, N = 296). HF events were defined as HF hospitalization or HF death.

Bi-cytopenia possibly induced by anti-PD-1 antibody for primary malignant melanoma of the esophagus: A case report.

Background: Anti-programmed cell death 1 antibody nivolumab is a promising agent for various cancers. Immune-related adverse events are recognized; however, bi-cytopenia with nivolumab has not been reported.

Case Presentation: A 73-year-old man was diagnosed with advanced primary malignant melanoma of the esophagus with liver, lung, and lymph node metastases.

Left Atrial Remodeling Assessed by Transthoracic Echocardiography Predicts Left Atrial Appendage Flow Velocity in Patients With Paroxysmal Atrial Fibrillation.

Atrial fibrillation (AF) is associated with an increased risk of stroke and other thromboembolic events. Left atrial (LA) thrombus formation is closely related to LA dysfunction, particularly to decreased LA appendage flow velocity (LAA-FV) in patients with AF. We estimated LAA-FV using parameters noninvasively obtained by transthoracic echocardiography (TTE) in patients with paroxysmal AF.
