Purpose: To examine the safety and efficacy of combined treatment with topical ivermectin 1% and intense pulsed light (IPL) for dry eye disease (DED) secondary to demodex blepharitis.

Methods: A retrospective review of medical files of patients treated at a private clinic specializing in DED between November 2022 and February 2024 was performed. Sixty-one patients aged 18 years or older with DED because of demodex blepharitis, who received the IPL and ivermectin 1% combination therapy, were included.

Article Synopsis
  • Sulbactam-durlobactam is a newly approved combination drug for treating specific types of pneumonia in adults, using data from multiple clinical studies to assess its pharmacokinetics.
  • A complex four-compartment model was created to understand how the drug behaves in the body, factoring in both kidney and non-kidney clearance methods.
  • Key findings showed that factors like body weight and renal function impact drug clearance, with the model being suitable for predicting how the drug performs in different patient populations.

Article Synopsis
  • The study explored whether non-syndromic connective tissue hyperlaxity is linked to myopia in adolescents, using conditions like hernias and scoliosis as indicators of tissue hyperlaxity.
  • Over 920,000 adolescents were analyzed, with 31.6% diagnosed with myopia; those with myopia exhibited higher rates of hernias (2.76%), pes planus (14.92%), and scoliosis (9.14%) compared to non-myopic peers.
  • Findings suggest that myopic adolescents may have a greater tendency toward conditions associated with tissue laxity, indicating a possible systemic link between myopia and hyperlaxity.

Purpose: To identify factors predicting slow visual recovery following myopic microkeratome assisted in situ keratomileusis (LASIK).

Design: Retrospective study.

Methods: This study included consecutive patients who underwent microkeratome-assisted myopic LASIK between January 2005 and December 2019 at Care Vision Laser Center, Tel Aviv, Israel.

Purpose: To identify factors predicting slow visual recovery following photorefractive keratectomy (PRK).

Methods: This retrospective study included consecutive patients who underwent PRK between January 2005 and December 2019 at Care Vision Laser Center, Tel Aviv, Israel. Myopic patients were divided into 2 groups according to whether they experienced normal recovery of visual acuity (within 60 days) or slow visual recovery (>60 days).

Background: Existing research on the relationship between body mass index (BMI) and astigmatism yields inconsistent results. This study analyses this association in a nationally representative sample of adolescents.

Methods: This retrospective, cross-sectional study included Israeli adolescents who underwent medical assessments before mandatory military service between 2011 and 2022.

Objectives: To examine the effects of percutaneous tetracycline delivery to the malar area using a thermomechanical device (Tixel) in patients suffering from festoons.

Methods: This retrospective study included patients who underwent combination treatment with a thermomechanical device (Tixel) followed by application of topical tetracycline 1% at two private clinics between 2019 and 2023. Demographic and medical data, treatment parameters along with before and after treatment photographs were retrieved retrospectively.

Vibrio harveyi and Vibrio parahaemolyticus are species of the Vibrio genus that often cause disease and mass mortality in crustaceans. If not handled quickly and appropriately, these diseases can cause considerable losses to farmers. Therefore, it is necessary to find a solution with safe and environmentally friendly disease prevention technology using natural ingredients, among others from plants, namely oil palm.

Recurrent herpetic keratitis is a leading cause of blindness worldwide. In this population-based cross-sectional study, the medical records of Israeli adolescents and young adults who underwent systematic preconscription evaluation for mandatory military service were reviewed. The prevalence of atopic conjunctival disease was evaluated in cases with and without documented recurrent herpetic keratitis.

Article Synopsis
  • The study aimed to examine how iris color influences the risk of intraoperative floppy iris syndrome (IFIS) during cataract surgeries.
  • It involved reviewing medical records of patients who had surgery, excluding those with specific ocular conditions, and assessing their iris colors through follow-up calls.
  • Findings showed that patients with blue and green irises had a significantly higher risk for IFIS compared to those with brown irises, with light-colored irises also linked to more severe cases and higher chances of affecting both eyes.

Tebipenem pivoxil hydrobromide (TBP-PI-HBr) is an oral (PO) carbapenem pro-drug that is converted to the active moiety tebipenem in the enterocytes. Tebipenem has activity against multidrug-resistant Gram-negative pathogens, including extended-spectrum beta lactamase-producing Enterobacterales, and is being developed for the treatment of patients with complicated urinary tract infections (cUTI) and acute pyelonephritis (AP). The objectives of these analyses were to develop a population pharmacokinetic (PK) model for tebipenem using data from three phase 1 studies and one phase 3 study and to identify covariates that described the variability in tebipenem PK.

ESB1609 is a small-molecule sphingosine-1-phosphate-5 receptor-selective agonist designed to restore lipid homeostasis by promoting cytosolic egress of sphingosine-1-phosphate to reduce abnormal levels of ceramide and cholesterol in disease. A phase 1 study was conducted in healthy volunteers to determine the safety, tolerability, and pharmacokinetics of ESB1609. Following single oral doses, ESB1609 demonstrated linear pharmacokinetics in plasma and cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) for formulations containing sodium laurel sulfate.

We present an unusual case of monkeypox (MPOX) virus transmission to a dermatology resident during examination of affected patients. Viral DNA sequencing led to the identification of the most likely contact. This case, along with a review of all published cases so far, emphasizes the possible hazard of MPOX transmission to health care personnel, even when wearing personal protective equipment.
