Background: Sparse information regarding the long-term risk of acute myocardial infarction (MI) following a transient ischemic attack (TIA) emphasizes further research to guide preventive strategies and risk stratification in patients with a TIA.
Methods: We conducted a nationwide cohort study to investigate the 5-year risk of MI and all-cause mortality in patients with a first-time TIA. Patients with a first-time TIA were identified in the Danish Stroke Registry (2013-2020), matched on age, sex, and calendar year (1:4) with the general population and (1:1) with patients with first-time ischemic stroke.
In this randomized controlled trial, we assessed the effects of three consecutive intra-silicone oil (SO) injections of methotrexate (MTX) on the outcomes of surgery for proliferative vitreoretinopathy grade C (PVR-C). Seventy-four eyes of 74 patients with PVR-C were included. Of these, 37 eyes were assigned to the MTX group and 37 eyes to the control group.

This study reviewed our nearly 2-decade experience to assess the impact of 2 ICA reattachment strategies on spinal cord injury (SCI).
Methods: All open DTAA/TAAA repairs performed from July 2004 to June 2022 were included, except for cases without intraoperative cerebral spinal fluid drainage.
Operative techniques and perioperative management for thoracoabdominal aortic aneurysm (TAAA) have been modified and refined, but the morbidity and mortality remain high. Major challenges in open TAAA repair are prevention of ischemic insults to multiple organs, especially the spinal cord, and minimizing bleeding. The purpose of this narrative review is to provide currently available techniques and management strategies for open TAAA repair that optimize outcomes.

While post-licensure studies have shown substantial declines in rotavirus gastroenteritis cases and deaths globally, there is little evidence of rotavirus vaccine effectiveness and impact from low-income countries in Asia. We aimed to evaluate the effectiveness of the Rotarix vaccine and the impact of Rotarix vaccine on rotavirus gastroenteritis hospitalisations (ie, hospital admissions) among children younger than 5 years in Afghanistan.

Methods: We retrospectively evaluated 13 patients diagnosed with aortoesophageal fistulas at a single institution from 2003 to 2021.
Radiation emergencies involving high doses of nuclear radiation pose significant risks from exposure to ionizing radiation in various scenarios. These situations include transportation accidents involving radioactive materials, occupational exposure, nuclear detonations, dirty bombs, and nuclear power plant accidents. In addition to the immediate risks of acute radiation syndrome (ARS) and related diseases, long-term exposure can increase the risk of other health issues such as cardiovascular disease and cancer.

Clinical Findings: We describe a preterm female infant with a birth weight of 2060 gr that was admitted for tracheostomy placement due to hypoxic-ischemic encephalopathy.
The Internet of Things (IoT) is a growing network of interconnected devices used in transportation, finance, public services, healthcare, smart cities, surveillance, and agriculture. IoT devices are increasingly integrated into mobile assets like trains, cars, and airplanes. Among the IoT components, wearable sensors are expected to reach three billion by 2050, becoming more common in smart environments like buildings, campuses, and healthcare facilities.

We describe characteristics of intussusception cases and assess potential intussusception risk associated with Rotarix vaccination in Afghan infants.
Methods: Multi-center prospective active hospital-based surveillance for intussusception was conducted from May 2018 to March 2022 in four sentinel sites in Afghanistan.
Objectives: The largest mumps outbreak in the United States since 2006 occurred in Arkansas during the 2016-17 school year. An additional dose (third dose) of measles-mumps-rubella vaccine (MMR3) was offered to school children. We evaluated the vaccine effectiveness (VE) of MMR3 compared with two doses of MMR for preventing mumps among school-aged children during the outbreak.

Whether this can be explained by a beneficial impact of BP-DES stent design on the local hemodynamic forces distribution remains unclear.
Objectives: To compare endothelial shear stress (ESS) distribution after implantation of ultrathin (us) BP-DES and DP-DES and examine the association between ESS and neointimal thickness (NIT) distribution in the two devices at 9 months follow up.
Background: Afghanistan experienced various outbreaks before and during the Covid-19 pandemic, including dengue, Crimean Congo hemorrhagic fever (CCHF), measles, and acute watery diarrhea (AWD). Diagnostic and surveillance support was limited, with only the Central Public Health Laboratory equipped to handle outbreak responses. This article highlights initiatives taken to improve diagnostic capabilities for COVID-19 and other outbreaks of public health concern encountered during the pandemic.

In some high- and middle-income countries, a low-level of increased risk of intussusception, a type of acute bowel obstruction, has been detected following rotavirus vaccination. However, no increased risk of intussusception was found in India, South Africa, or a network of 7 other African countries.

The purpose of the review was to evaluate the quantity and quality of published articles on air pollution and health-based studies in 22 EMR countries to determine if they can be applied to adopting air quality standards.
Methods: We designed a review based on a broad search of the literature in the Scopus, PubMed, and web of science (WOS) databases published from January 1, 2000, to January 2, 2022, using combinations of the following relevant terms: air pollution, health, and EMR countries.
Purpose: To evaluate the effects of intravitreal ziv-aflibercept injections (IVZ) on subfoveal choroidal thickness (SCT) as well as on central macular thickness (CMT) and on best corrected visual acuity (BCVA) changes in eyes with center-involved diabetic macular edema (CI-DME).
Methods: Fifty-seven eyes of 36 patients with CI-DME were included in this prospective interventional case series. Structural optical coherence tomography (OCT) and enhanced depth imaging OCT were performed at baseline followed by three monthly 1.

Thoracoabdominal aortic aneurysms (TAAA) represent a unique pathology that is associated with considerable mortality if untreated. While the advent of endovascular technologies has introduced new modalities for consideration, the mainstay of TAAA treatment remains open surgical repair. However, the optimal conduct of open TAAA repair requires careful consideration of patient risk factors and a collaborative team effort to mitigate the risk of perioperative complications.

This paper proposes a novel algorithm for the clustering of these IC topographies and compares its results with the most currently used clustering algorithms. In this study, 32-electrode EEG signals were recorded at a sampling rate of 500 Hz for 48 participants.

Methods: We retrospectively reviewed data from 2171 patients who underwent proximal aortic surgery requiring hypothermic circulatory arrest between 1991 and 2020. Cooling times were divided into quartiles and clinical outcome event rates were compared across quartiles using contingency table methods.
Initial responses to tuberculosis treatment are poor predictors of final therapeutic outcomes in drug-susceptible disease, suggesting that treatment success depends on features that are hidden within a small minority of the overall infecting Mycobacterium tuberculosis population. We developed a multitranswell robotic system to perform numerous parallel cultures of genetically barcoded M. tuberculosis exposed to steady-state concentrations of rifampicin to uncover these difficult-to-eliminate minority populations.

We herein evaluated our 3-decade experience using hypothermic circulatory arrest with retrograde cerebral perfusion (DHCA/RCP) to evaluate for its safety and safe duration during proximal aortic repair.
Methods: All proximal aortic repairs using DHCA/RCP from January 1991 to December 2020 performed at our institution were included in the analyses.
