Patients with subarachnoid neurocysticercosis (NCC) are usually older than those with parenchymal disease. Introduction: As one of the major health problems in the present century, the COVID-19 pandemic affected all parts of the global communities and the health of substance users are potentially at a greater risk of harm. This global study has been designed and conducted by the International Society of Addiction Medicine Practice and Policy Interest Group (ISAM-PPIG) to understand better the health related issues of people with Substance Use Disorders (SUD) as well as responses of the relevant health care systems during the pandemic.

The genus contains species used by indigenous people of South America long before the domestication of plants. While abuse of the narcotic cocaine has impacted society on many levels, these species and their wild relatives contain untapped resources for the benefit of mankind in the form of foods, pharmaceuticals, phytotherapeutic products, and other high-value plant-derived metabolites.

Classifying ecosystems with metaproperties from terrestrial laser scanner data.

In this study, we introduce metaproperty analysis of terrestrial laser scanner (TLS) data, and demonstrate its application through several ecological classification problems. Metaproperty analysis considers pulse level and spatial metrics derived from the hundreds of thousands to millions of lidar pulses present in a single scan from a typical contemporary instrument. In such large aggregations, properties of the populations of lidar data reflect attributes of the underlying ecological conditions of the ecosystems.

Contemporary terrestrial laser scanning (TLS) is being used widely in forest ecology applications to examine ecosystem properties at increasing spatial and temporal scales. Harvard Forest (HF) in Petersham, MA, USA, is a long-term ecological research (LTER) site, a National Ecological Observatory Network (NEON) location and contains a 35 ha plot which is part of Smithsonian Institution's Forest Global Earth Observatory (ForestGEO). The combination of long-term field plots, eddy flux towers and the detailed past historical records has made HF very appealing for a variety of remote sensing studies.

Outbreak of Cutaneous Leishmaniasis in Peruvian Military Personnel Undertaking Training Activities in the Amazon Basin, 2010.

Military personnel deployed to the Amazon Basin are at high risk for cutaneous leishmaniasis (CL). We responded to an outbreak among Peruvian Army personnel returning from short-term training in the Amazon, conducting active case detection, lesion sample collection, and risk factor assessment. The attack rate was 25% (76/303); the incubation period was 2-36 weeks (median = 8).

To describe the management of the distal ureter during radical nephroureterectomy with the transvesical laparoendoscopic single-site surgery (T-LESS) approach. Between January 2010 and October 2013, five patients underwent laparoscopic radical nephroureterectomy for upper urinary tract carcinoma (UTUC) with the T-LESS approach. Patients were placed in the supine position.

Background: Squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) is the predominant histological type in men, and adenocarcinoma is the most common subtype in women in the world. The incidence of SCC is decreasing in men, while the incidence of adenocarcinoma (AC) is stable or slightly increasing in western countries. There is active research on the AC subtype but SCC remains poorly studied.

Understanding caregiver health behaviors: depressive symptoms mediate caregiver self-efficacy and health behavior patterns.

Previous research on female caregivers of elderly relatives with dementia has demonstrated that caregiving self-efficacy (SE) is associated with reduced cumulative health risk. The overarching aim of the current study was to expand on that research by exploring whether depressive symptoms mediate the relationship between 3 domains of caregiving SE and cumulative health risk associated with health behavior patterns. Methadone maintenance therapy (MMT) has been found effective in treating heroin addiction. Serious consideration should be given to the modality of methadone distribution, as it influences not only treatment outcome but the attitudes of policy makers and the community, too. On one hand, the choice of take-home methadone removes the need for daily attendance at a methadone clinic, which seems to improve patients' quality of life.

To address the shortage of such resources, the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC) created Treatnet, a network of 20 drug dependence treatment resource centers around the world. Treatnet's primary goal is to promote the use of effective addiction treatment practices.

Is religious coping associated with cumulative health risk? An examination of religious coping styles and health behavior patterns in Alzheimer's dementia caregivers.

The current study explored the relationship between religious coping and cumulative health risk associated with health behavior patterns in a sample of 256 Latina and Caucasian female caregivers of elderly relatives with dementia. Primary analyses examined the relationship between religious coping (both positive and negative) and an overall index of cumulative health risk. Secondary analyses were conducted on the individual health behaviors subsumed in the broader index.

Bevacizumab: a safe and effective treatment in a patient with advanced colorectal cancer and repeated removal of metastases.

Bevacizumab has been shown to be effective combined with chemotherapy for first-line treatment of advanced colorectal cancer, but little information is available about its efficacy and safety in patients who may be candidates for surgery at any time during the disease. The case history of a female patient with colorectal cancer, undergoing surgery for liver metastases and bilateral surgery for lung metastases at different time-points during her disease, is reported. Perioperative bevacizumab administration caused no complications either associated with surgery, in the early postoperative period, or in the subsequent months.

This disease status is of critical importance at first clinical presentation because of the tight therapeutic window for chemotherapy. Long-acting opioid-agonists in the treatment of heroin addiction: why should we call them "substitution"?

Many studies have documented the safety, efficacy, and effectiveness of long-acting opioids (L-AOs), such as methadone and buprenorphine, in the treatment of heroin addiction. This article reviews the pharmacological differences between L-AO medications and short-acting opioids (heroin) in terms of reinforcing properties, pharmacokinetics, effects on the endocrine and immune systems. Given their specific pharmacological profile, L-AOs contribute to control addictive behavior, reduce craving, and restore the balance of disrupted endocrine function.
