Depression is a common psychiatric disorder in patients with advanced chronic kidney diseases (CKDs). Strong correlation has been reported between depression and patients' morbidity and mortality among dialysis patients. On the contrary, chronic inflammation may be a major contributor to morbidity and mortality in these patients.

Background: This study was designed to assess the effect of sertraline on serum concentrations of interleukin-6 (IL-6), tumor necrosis factor-alpha (TNF-α), IL-10 and high-sensitivity C-reactive protein (hs-CRP) of depressed hemodialysis (HD) patients.

Methods: During a randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled trial, fifty depressed HD patients were allocated to receive sertraline or placebo for 12 weeks. Patients' depression was assessed using Beck Depression Inventory-second edition (BDI-II).
