Neuro- and retinal degenerative diseases rob millions of aging individuals of their independence. Researching these diseases in human tissue has been hindered by the immediate loss of electric activity in neurons after the circulation ceases. Recent studies indicate that limited neuronal activity can be revived postmortem, even in the retina.

Closed-perfusion transretinal ERG setup for preclinical drug and nanostructure testing.

Objective: The isolated mammalian retina may serve as a sensitive biosensor for preclinical drug testing, including eye drugs and a broader range of pharmaceuticals. To facilitate testing with minimal amounts of drug molecules or nanostructures, we developed a closed-perfusion transretinal electroretinography (tERG) setup.

Methods: The major challenge with small amounts of circulating perfusate was maintaining retinal viability and stability during long experiments.

Anticoagulant Use in COVID-19 Patients: A Longitudinal Study From Zanjan, Iran.

Background The mortality and morbidity of thrombotic events in patients with coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) are increasing worldwide. The clinical impact of prophylactic anticoagulation regimens among these patients in Iran remains unclear. This study aimed to evaluate the use of prophylactic anticoagulants and outcomes among COVID-19 patients admitted to a tertiary referral hospital.

A p97/Valosin-Containing Protein Inhibitor Drug CB-5083 Has a Potent but Reversible Off-Target Effect on Phosphodiesterase-6.

CB-5083 is an inhibitor of p97/valosin-containing protein (VCP), for which phase I trials for cancer were terminated because of adverse effects on vision, such as photophobia and dyschromatopsia. Lower dose CB-5083 could combat inclusion body myopathy with early-onset Paget disease and frontotemporal dementia or multisystem proteinopathy caused by gain-of-function mutations in VCP. We hypothesized that the visual impairment in the cancer trial was due to CB-5083's inhibition of phosphodiesterase (PDE)-6, which mediates signal transduction in photoreceptors.

Ozonation of carbamazepine and its main transformation products: product determination and reaction mechanisms.

Carbamazepine (CBZ) is a recalcitrant pharmaceutical often detected in wastewater and in the environment. CBZ can be removed from wastewater through advanced oxidation treatment methods such as ozonation. In this study, CBZ and its transformation product 1-(2-benzaldehyde)-(1H,3H)-quinazoline-2,4-dione (BQD) were ozonated, and the formation and transformation of their ozonation products were investigated using liquid chromatography coupled to ion trap mass spectrometry and high-resolution mass spectrometry as well as nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR).

[THE SIGNIFICANCE OF TORSIONAL NYSTAGMUS ON THE ROLL REST].

Objectives: To characterize a subgroup of patients that were diagnosed with benign paroxysmal positional vertigo of the posterior semicircular canal pBPPV, with findings of geotropic-torsional nystagmus on the roll rest (RT) that intensified on the Dix-Hallpike exam (DH).

Methods: The study population consisted of patients with the diagnosis of pBPPV. First, the roll test (RT) and then the DH test were performed.

Catalytic ozonation of the antibiotic sulfadiazine: Reaction kinetics and transformation mechanisms.

In this work, ozone has been used to study the transformation of the antibiotic sulfadiazine (SDZ). SDZ and its transformation products was investigated using liquid chromatography coupled to mass spectrometry and using NMR. The results revealed that 6% of SDZ is transformed into 2-aminopyrimidine.

Policosanol as a new inhibitor candidate for vascular calcification in diabetic hyperlipidemic rats.

This work mainly aimed to investigate the probable changes of aortic calcification by policosanol, omega-3 fatty acids in comparison with atorvastatin and subsequent progression of atherosclerosis in diabetic hyperlipemic rat model. Adult male albino rats of wistar strain (30) were divided into five groups (n = 6/group); one was fed normal diet and was used as a normal group, the other groups received alloxan, atherogenic diet (CCT - rat chow diet supplemented with 4% cholesterol, 1% cholic acid, and 0.5% thiouracil) and categorized as follows: the second group received no treatment and kept as control (diabetic hyperlipidemic control group (DHC)).

Cord blood resistin and adiponectin in term newborns of diabetic mothers.

Introduction: Adipose tissue can release hormones into the blood stream in response to specific extracellular stimuli or changes in metabolic status. Resistin, an adipose-secreted factor, is primarily involved in the modulation of insulin sensitivity and adipocyte differentiation. Adiponectin, an adipocyte-specific hormone with insulin sensitizing, anti-inflammatory and anti-atherogenic effects, is reduced in obesity and type II diabetes.

Identification of some skeletal deformities in freshwater teleosts raised in Egyptian aquaculture.

This study examines different forms of skeletal deformities detected in fish species collected from two Egyptian aquaculture facilities during two harvest seasons in 2008. Various patterns of skeletal deformities were observed in 19 of 959 fish collected. Deformities were diagnosed using a number of techniques including clinical, radiographic, sonographic and histopathological evaluations.

An investigation of spider fauna of olive orchards in northern part of Iran.

The current study investigates spider fauna of olive orchards in Guilan, Ghazvin, Mazandaran, Zanjan and Golestan provinces during 2002-2003. Spiders were collected from branches, leaves, trunks, on the ground and under the stones and grasses by Steiner and Baggiolini method, bottle, aspirator, pitfall trap, pans and insect net and transfered to laboratory and classified in 45 species and 46 genera belonged to 18 families. Twenty five species, 9 genera and 2 families are reported for the first time of olive orchards.
