Conventional elephant trunk (cET) and frozen elephant trunk (FET) are two distinct approaches to the surgical treatment of thoracic aortic aneurysms and dissections. With the advent and growing uptake of endovascular technologies, FET is becoming increasingly popular for its potential to be performed as a single-stage operation with better aortic remodeling and less risk of graft kinking than the traditional two-stage cET procedure. However, FET has been associated with a higher risk of spinal cord ischemia and its use in patients with connective tissue disorder remains controversial.

Background: Spontaneous coronary artery dissection is a rare and important cause of myocardial infarction, especially in young women without other coronary artery disease. This arterial dissection can occur within or between any of the 3 layers. Its predisposing factors include connective tissue diseases (Marfone syndrome, Ehlers-Danlos syndrome), vasculitis (polyarteritis nodosa, systemic lupus erythematosus, and Kawasaki disease), atherosclerosis and fibromuscular dysplasia.

Propose: An electrocardiogram (ECG) has been extensively used to detect rhythm disturbances. We sought to determine the accuracy of different machine learning in distinguishing abnormal ECGs from normal ones in children who were examined using a resting 12-Lead ECG machine, and we also compared the manual and automated measurement using the modular ECG Analysis System (MEANS) algorithm of ECG features.

Methods: Altogether, 10745 ECGs were recorded for students aged 6 to 18.

Cardiac valvular Ehlers-Danlos syndrome (EDS) (type IV) is a rare subtype of the syndrome. The progressive and severe involvement of the heart valves is the principal characteristic of cardiovascular EDS, hence the necessity of the screening of patients with EDS for possible cardiovascular complications. We herein describe a 17-year-old male patient, with a known case of Ehlers-Danlos syndrome, who was referred to our center due to symptomatic severe mitral regurgitation.

  • Accelerated idioventricular rhythm (AIVR) is a slow ventricular arrhythmia often seen in conditions like coronary artery disease and usually doesn't require specific treatment.
  • A case was reported of a 76-year-old man who developed AIVR after cardiac surgery due to hypothermia, leading to temporary hemodynamic instability, despite good initial recovery.
  • The patient was successfully treated by warming him up to 35ºC, after which his heart rhythm returned to normal, emphasizing the importance of addressing hypothermia to prevent arrhythmias post-surgery.

Article Synopsis
  • A revolution in managing type B aortic dissection (TBAD) has occurred over the past 20 years, largely due to the introduction of thoracic endovascular aortic repair (TEVAR), though there are ongoing debates about its use, especially regarding differences between genders and ethnicities in outcomes.
  • An international study examined data from 58 TBAD patients treated with TEVAR over 17 years, focusing on demographic and clinical outcome disparities between male and female patients of different ethnicities.
  • Results indicated that while the mean age was similar, males had more complicated cases, larger proximal stent diameters, and most patients were Caucasian, highlighting a lack of significant ethnic diversity and no established risk prediction models.

Background: The introduction of the frozen elephant trunk (FET) technique for total arch replacement (TAR) has revolutionized the field of aortovascular surgery. However, although FET yields excellent results, the risk of certain complications requiring secondary intervention remains present, negating its one-step hybrid advantage over conventional techniques. This systematic review and meta-analysis sought to evaluate controversies regarding the incidence of FET-related complications, with a focus on aortic remodeling, distal stent-graft induced new entry (dSINE) and endoleak, in patients with type A aortic dissection (TAAD) and/or thoracic aortic aneurysm.
