Article Synopsis
  • Tear size is important for predicting outcomes after rotator cuff repair, but this study investigates whether the width or length of the tear matters more when the overall area is similar.
  • The study involved two groups of patients based on tear dimensions: the mediolateral dominant (MLD) group and the anteroposterior dominant (APD) group, comparing demographics, imaging results, and clinical outcomes.
  • Results showed that even with similar tear sizes, the MLD group had a significantly lower retear rate and specific demographic differences, indicating that the anteroposterior dimension plays a more critical role in retear risk.

Background: The fatty infiltration and atrophy in the muscle after a rotator cuff (RC) tear are important in surgical decision-making and are linked to poor clinical outcomes after rotator cuff repair. An accurate and reliable quantitative method should be developed to assess the entire RC muscles.

Purpose: To develop a fully automated approach based on a deep neural network to segment RC muscles from clinical magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) scans.

Article Synopsis
  • In severe rotator cuff tears, fatty degeneration of the infraspinatus muscle is sometimes more pronounced than that of the supraspinatus, which raises concerns about suprascapular nerve damage.
  • This study evaluates the impact of releasing the transverse scapular ligament on patients with large rotator cuff tears and significant infraspinatus fatty degeneration compared to a group that did not undergo this procedure.
  • Results showed that healing failure was significantly higher in the ligament release group (65%) compared to the non-release group (36%), with no improvement in fatty degeneration or muscle atrophy post-surgery for the group that received the ligament release.

Invariant natural-killer T (NKT) cells play pathogenic roles in allergic asthma in murine models and possibly also humans. While many studies show that the development and functions of innate and adaptive immune cells depend on their metabolic state, the evidence for this in NKT cells is very limited. It is also not clear whether such metabolic regulation of NKT cells could participate in their pathogenic activities in asthma.

Background: Deltoid function critically influences the results of reverse total shoulder arthroplasty (RTSA), and spontaneous deltoid attrition tears are frequently detected in cuff tear arthropathy (CTA) patients; however, the clinical impacts of these tears on RTSA outcomes are undetermined. Our aim was to determine the effect of spontaneous deltoid attrition tears on postoperative outcomes after RTSA without an additional deltoid procedure.

Methods: Seventy-two patients who underwent RTSA for CTA with preoperative magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and a minimum clinical follow-up of 1 year (mean, 32 months) were retrospectively reviewed in the study.

Compared to infant formula, breast milk is the best source of nutrition for infants; it not only improves the neonatal intestinal function, but also regulates the immune system and gut microbiota composition. However, probiotic-fortified infant formula may further enhance the infant gut environment by overcoming the limitations of traditional infant formula. We investigated the probiotic formula administration for one month by comparing 118 Korean infants into the following three groups: infants in each group fed with breast milk (50), probiotic formula (35), or placebo formula-fed group (33).

In this study, we prepared visible light-curable methacrylated glycol chitosan (MGC) hydrogel patches for the prenatal treatment of fetal myelomeningocele (MMC) and investigated their feasibility using a retinoic acid-induced fetal MMC rat model. 4, 5, and 6 w/v% of MGC were selected as candidate precursor solutions, and photo-cured for 20 s, because the resulting hydrogels were found to possess concentration dependent tunable mechanical properties and structural morphologies. Moreover, these materials exhibited no foreign body reactions with good adhesive properties in animal studies.
