Bilateral ureteropelvic junction obstructions in newborn identical twins.

Identical twin black females were born with bilateral ureteropelvic junction obstructions. Dismembered pyeloplasties performed in the neonatal period have apparently been successful. Although a tendency for bilaterality is more frequently reported in early infancy, the authors are unaware of a similar occurrence reported in identical twins.

Urinary tract infection after transrectal needle biopsy of the prostate.

After routine cleansing enemas 80 patients were randomized to undergo irrigation of the rectal vault with either povidone-iodine or saline. A transrectal prostatic needle biopsy then was performed. Antimicrobials were not used before biopsy and were only ordered after biopsy if fever developed or a positive urine culture was obtained.

Surgical management of "pus-pot" perineum.

Ten cases of disabling "pus-pot" perineum secondary to hidradenitis suppurativa, urethral stricture disease, condyloma acuminatum and anoperineal fistula were treated by wide excision of involved tissues. In 7 men the testicles were transposed to thigh pouches, and in 3 the entire penile skin was excised and replaced with a skin graft.

Lack of value of routine preoperative bone and liver scans in cystectomy candidates.

A retrospective review of 341 patients with bladder cancer revealed 58 candidates for cystectomy. These patients were evaluated preoperatively by radionuclide bone and/or liver scans in an attempt to increase the accuracy of clinical staging. In the face of a normal history, physical examination, liver function tests or serum alkaline phosphatase routine preoperative bone and liver scans in cystectomy candidates did not contribute significantly to clinical staging or choice of treatment.

Evaluation of povidone-iodine as vesical irrigant for treatment and prevention of urinary tract infections.

This is a preliminary study evaluating diluted solutions of povidone-iodine (PVP-I) as urinary bladder irrigants for the treatment and prevention of urinary tract infection. Diluted povidone-iodine solutions were used as indwelling catheter irrigants and as instillations into the urinary bladder following intermittent catheterization. The diluted PVP-I solutions had no efficacy in either the treatment or prevention of urinary tract infections when used as indwelling urethral or suprapubic catheter irrigants.

Finney hinged penile implant: experience with 100 cases.

The flexirod hinged penile prosthesis was implanted in 100 patients: 21 through a perineal incision and 79 through a dorsal penile incision. Surgery via the dorsal approach is performed more easily and quickly, and produces less postoperative pain. The modified technique and results for the hinged implant are described.

Adenocarcinoma in multilocular renal cyst.

The fifth case of a patient with a multilocular cystic nephroma with an associated adenocarcinoma is reported. The histology of the tumor and biochemical analysis of the cyst fluid are presented and the literature summarized.

New technique for percutaneous nephrostomy under ultrasound guidance.

The 8F cystocath has been used as a temporary percutaneous nephrostomy. B-mode ultrasonography was used to determine the depth and direction of trocar placement after initial confirmation with a spinal needle. No immediate complications were noted in 10 successful insertions and there was only 1 failure of entry.

Partial inhibition of castration induced ventral prostate regression with actinomycin D and cycloheximide.

Sprague Dawley male rats were injected subcutaneously with either actinomycin D or cycloheximide in saline immediately after castration. Control animals received saline only. Treatment was repeated daily for 4 subsequent days, and 24 hr after the last injection rats were sacrificed by decapitation.

Elevated rate of 3H-uridine incorporation in regressing rat ventral prostate.

Ventral prostates from adult Sprague-Dawley rats were removed at intervals during the first 2 weeks postcastration. Incubation of tissue with 3H-uridine and 3H-leucine was performed to determine the incorporation rate of radioactivity into the RNA and protein fractions respectively. Prostatic wet weight and 3H-leucine incorporation rate into prostate protein diminished postcastration, whereas 3H-uridine incorporation rate remained relatively high.

Early stage prostatic cancer investigated by pelvic lymph node biopsy and bone marrow acid phosphatase.

A prospective study was done to evaluate 47 patients with early stage prostatic cancer. Pelvic lymphadenectomy was combined with bone marrow acid phosphatase determination to evaluate early metastatic disease. Thirteen patients (28 per cent) had tumor in the pelvic lymph nodes.

Followup of cutaneous ureterostomy in children.

Thirty-two children with cutaneous ureterostomies are reviewed, of whom 27 were evaluated with an average followup of 3 years 8 months. Of these 27 patients 26 had successful stabilization of the upper tracts as determined by gross radiographic and renal function parameters. The incidence of stomal stenosis and revisions is no worse than the reported rates in cases of ileal conduits followed for a comparable length of time.
