The SIDDHARTA-2 collaboration has developed a novel X-ray detection system based on cadmium-zinc-telluride (CZT, CdZnTe), marking the first application of this technology at the DAΦNE electron-positron collider at INFN-LNF. This work aims to demonstrate the stability of the detectors' performance in terms of linearity and resolution over short and long periods, thereby establishing their suitability for precise spectroscopic measurements within a collider environment. A reference calibration spectrum is presented in association with findings from assessments of linearity and resolution stability.

Article Synopsis
  • Genital schistosomiasis (GS) is a neglected tropical disease affecting reproductive health, with limited awareness and knowledge among healthcare providers in Sub-Saharan Africa leading to underdiagnosis.
  • A survey of 139 primary healthcare providers in Northern Nigeria revealed a mixed awareness of GS, with good knowledge of its causes and treatment but lower understanding of its complications; overall, 43.9% showed good awareness.
  • The findings highlight the need for targeted educational programs to improve knowledge of GS among healthcare providers, especially in regions with lower awareness, to enhance early detection and management.

Purpose: Performance status (PS), an essential indicator of patients' functional abilities, is often documented in clinical notes of patients with cancer. The use of natural language processing (NLP) in extracting PS from electronic medical records (EMRs) has shown promise in enhancing clinical decision-making, patient monitoring, and research studies. We designed and validated a multi-institute NLP pipeline to automatically extract performance status from free-text patient notes.

This study focuses on dilution effect of target-site resistance (TSR) to acetolactate synthase (ALS) inhibitors in Schoenoplectiella juncoides, which harbors two ALS genes, ALS1 and ALS2. We assessed gene expression, enzyme activity, and whole-plant resistance profiles across four S. juncoides lines: the susceptible line, the parental resistant lines with a homozygous mutation in either ALS1 or ALS2, and the bred progeny line with homozygous mutations in both ALS1 and ALS2.

Schoenoplectiella juncoides, a noxious sedge weed in Japanese rice paddy, has two ALS genes, and ALS-inhibitor-resistant plants have a mutation in one of the ALS genes. The authors aimed (a) to quantitate the effect of the number of mutant alleles of ALS genes on whole-plant resistance of S. juncoides and (b) to clarify a mode of inheritance of the resistance by investigating resistance levels of the progenies of a hybrid between two S.

Background: Screening lies at the heart of preventive care. However, COVID-19 dramatically disrupted routine screening efforts, resulting in excess mortality not directly attributable to COVID-19. Screening rates during COVID varied markedly by facility and clinical condition, suggesting susceptibilities in screening and referral process workflow.

Article Synopsis
  • Kaonic atom X-ray spectroscopy helps explore the strong interactions between kaons and atomic nuclei/nucleons, using soft X-ray emissions (<20 keV) from light kaonic atoms like hydrogen and helium as well as ongoing research for harder X-ray emissions (>20 keV) from intermediate kaonic atoms like carbon and aluminum.
  • New experiments, particularly the SIDDHARTA-2 and EXCALIBUR proposals, focus on making precise measurements using advanced cadmium-zinc-telluride (CZT) detectors, which can effectively detect hard X-rays and gamma-rays.
  • A prototype CZT detector showed impressive performance at room temperature, achieving significant energy resolution in its measurements, and experiments conducted at the DAΦNE collider

Background: Excessive body fat may be a major cause of insulin resistance and diabetes. But body weight reduction by energy restriction may simultaneously reduce both fat and muscle. Skeletal muscle is an important organ for glucose metabolism regulation, and loss of muscle may deteriorate glucose metabolism.

The age-dependent decrease in muscle mass and function is known as sarcopenia. The risk of sarcopenia is higher in patients with diabetes, and assessment of muscle mass and function is especially important in patients with diabetes. Recent reports suggest that the phase angle (PhA), which is obtained from bioelectrical impedance analysis (BIA), may be a good marker of not only muscle mass but also muscle function in healthy people.

Objective The index of microvascular resistance (IMR) is an invasive method for quantifying the coronary microvasculature independent of the presence and degree of epicardial stenosis during cardiac catheterization, whereas the Selvester QRS score, which is related to myocardial damage, is a relatively simple and non-invasive measurement procedure. We investigated the relationship between the QRS score and coronary microvascular dysfunction (CMD) assessed via IMR. Methods Data from 74 patients who underwent invasive coronary physiological measurements were retrospectively reviewed.

Trans-catheter aortic valve replacement (TAVR) is an excellent alternative intervention for surgical aortic valve replacement. Cardiac sympathetic nervous (CSN) function and left atrial (LA) volume are both important prognostic factors in patients with aortic stenosis (AS) after TAVR. The relationship between the two clinical factors is unknown, however.

Pancreatic neuroendocrine tumors are rare neoplasms characterized into nonfunctioning (NF-PNET) and functioning (F-PNET) subtypes. F-PNETs typically involve overt symptoms related to excessive hormone secretion but may rarely present first as NF-PNETs with delayed transformation. We present a patient with known NF-PNET with liver metastases who developed hypoglycemia 2 years after initial diagnosis due to malignant insulinoma.

The crystallization mechanism of zeolites remains unclarified to date because of lack of effective techniques in characterizing the local structures of amorphous precursors under synthetic conditions. Herein, high-energy X-ray total scattering measurement with pair distribution function analysis is performed throughout the hydrothermal synthesis of SSZ-13 zeolite to investigate the amorphous-to-crystalline transformation at the sub-nano level in real time. Ordered four-membered rings (4Rs) are dominantly formed during the induction period, prior to the significant increase in the number of symmetric six- and eight-membered rings (6Rs and 8Rs) in the crystal growth stage.

BACKGROUND Rhabdomyolysis is a condition in which intracellular components are released into the blood and urine. Rhabdomyolysis can be caused by drug-related complications and COVID-19; however, the underlying mechanism is not clear. In this study, we report a case of rhabdomyolysis complicated by COVID-19, in which we presumed that the cause of rhabdomyolysis was related to prior administration of haloperidol by assessment of the drug history and progression of myopathy.

During AEI zeolite synthesis using acid treated FAU (AcT-FAU), we found the recrystallization of high-silica FAU with high crystallinity and Si/Al ratio of 6.1 using ,-dimethyl-3,5-dimethylpiperidinium hydroxide (DMDMPOH) after 2 h, followed by the crystallization of AEI FAU-to-AEI interzeolite conversion at a longer synthesis time. In order to understand the formation mechanism of high-silica FAU and generalize its direct synthesis, we have investigated this synthesis process.

P-wave terminal force in lead V1 (PTFV1) is a marker of increased left atrial (LA) overload. Whether PTFV1 is associated with left ventricular (LV) diastolic function remains undetermined. We tested the hypothesis that PTFV1 is associated with LV diastolic parameters derived from gated myocardial perfusion single-photon emission computed tomography (SPECT) in patients with no significant perfusion abnormalities.
