Bicycle helmet use among Maryland children: effect of legislation and education.

Although bicycle helmets are effective in preventing head injuries, use of helmets among children remains infrequent. In response to the bicycling deaths of two children, Howard County, Maryland, became the first US jurisdiction to mandate use of bicycle helmets for children. Schoolchildren were lectured by police about the law before its enactment.

Seroprevalence of ovine progressive pneumonia virus in sheep in the United States as assessed by analyses of voluntarily submitted samples.

Ovine progressive pneumonia (OPP) is a lentivirus-induced disease of sheep in the United States that is similar, if not identical, to maedi/visna in many other countries. Prevalence estimates of seropositivity to this virus in sheep in the United States have been confined to limited groups or flocks of sheep and have varied from 1 to 90%. In this study of detection of antibodies against OPP virus, we found a lower general prevalence of antibodies to OPP virus in sheep than was previously reported.

Motorcycle helmet-use laws and head injury prevention.

Objective: To rebut criticism of a previous study of motorcycle helmet-use laws through reanalysis with improved measures of exposure, stratification for regional differences in crash risk, and addressing of total motorcycle-related mortality and the grounds for targeting motorcyclists for helmet-use laws.

Design: Death certificate-based correlational study of motorcycle-related deaths and motorcycle helmet-use laws.

Prevalence of antibody to caprine arthritis-encephalitis virus in goats in the United States.

Goats from 28 states were tested for antibodies to caprine arthritis-encephalitis virus. Of 3,790 goats, 1,175 (31%) tested positive, and of 196 herds tested, 143 (73%) had 1 or more seropositive members. This prevalence, based on serum samples from all goats in the participating herds, was lower than most rates reported in other studies.

Evaluation of an intervention to reduce playground hazards in Atlanta child-care centers.

In 1988, we identified playground hazards at 58 child-care centers (CCCs) and intervened by showing the director the hazards and distributing safety information. In 1990, we evaluated the 58 intervention CCCs as well as 71 randomly selected control CCCs. Intervention centers had 9.

As part of a national telephone survey regarding health events associated with out-of-home child care, data regarding poisonings and injuries were collected. Of 171 reported poisonings, none occurred during out-of-home child care. The rate of injury during out-of-home child care was 1.

The value of a new family practice center patient to the academic medical center.

Background: Family practice centers are important contributors to the financial viability of academic health centers, although they often are not the direct beneficiaries of their own labor. The greater time commitment and lower costs of most primary care creates significant financial hardships for departments of family medicine in university centers. This study describes the use of inpatient and outpatient health care services by new patients at a university family practice center.

Immunity induced in rats vaccinated with toxoid prepared from heat-labile toxin produced by Pasteurella multocida serogroup D.

Rats were vaccinated with a toxoid (D-toxoid) prepared from purified heat-labile toxin (D-toxin) produced by Pasteurella multocida serogroup D. Vaccination of rats with D-toxoid prevented death and other effects of D-toxin (hepatic necrosis, development of elevated leukocyte counts, lymphopenia, neutrophilia, and elevated complement titers) that occurred in phosphate buffered saline (PBS)-vaccinated control rats.

Ophthalmologic screening of adults with mental retardation.

Ophthalmological screening was conducted on 113 clients in a work activity center for adults with mental retardation. Thirty-two percent had abnormalities that were neither refractive nor strabismic. We encountered no instance of neglect of current organic ocular disease.

Effects of adjuvant-augmented germling vaccines in turkey poults challenged with Aspergillus fumigatus.

Turkey poults were vaccinated with combinations of two different germling preparations and three adjuvants (N-acetylmuranyl-L-alanyl-D-isoglutamine, Pasteurella multocida lipopolysaccharide [LPS], and avridine) at 1 and 2 weeks of age, and their immunity was challenged by sublethal exposure to aerosols of Aspergillus fumigatus conidia at 1 month of age. Fewer turkeys in the groups given vaccines prepared from germlings grown on Dorset's and Henley's medium (D&H) had organisms in lung tissue at 2 weeks after challenge exposure as compared with those vaccinated with germling grown on neopeptone dialysate (Neo). Head injury--associated deaths from motorcycle crashes. Relationship to helmet-use laws.

A review of US mortality data from 1979 to 1986 identified 15,194 deaths and nearly 600,000 years of potential life lost before age 65 years that were associated with head injuries from motorcycle crashes. White males from 15 to 34 years of age accounted for 69% of the deaths. The rate of motorcycle-related deaths associated with head injury declined modestly between 1979 and 1986 (19% using rates based on resident population and 8% based on motorcycle registrations).

Playground hazards in Atlanta child care centers.

We identified 684 playground hazards in 66 child care centers despite regulations mandating that the grounds be hazard-free. Of 21 centers with less than or equal to 5 hazards, 42.9 percent reported a playground-related injury in the previous year; of 25 centers with 6-11 hazards, 52.

Serologic survey for transmissible gastroenteritis virus neutralizing antibodies in selected feral and domestic swine sera in the southern United States.

Serum samples collected from feral and domestic swine (Sus scrofa) in Florida and feral swine in Georgia and Texas were assayed by plaque reduction for their virus neutralizing (VN) antibodies against the porcine transmissible gastroenteritis virus (TGE). None of 560 samples collected from feral swine contained VN antibodies for TGE virus, but experimentally infected feral swine seroconverted. None of 665 samples from domestic swine contained TGE-VN antibodies.

Effect of muramyl dipeptide on immunogenicity of Corynebacterium pseudotuberculosis whole-cell vaccines in mice and lambs.

Colostrum-deprived lambs and CF1 mice were vaccinated with water-in-oil emulsion vaccines containing nonviable whole cells (WC) of Corynebacterium pseudotuberculosis with and without muramyl dipeptide (MDP). Efficacy of vaccines was determined from the survival of mice and lesions in lambs after IV injection of 10(4) colony-forming units of C pseudotuberculosis. In mice, protection was related to the concentration of WC in the vaccine.

Survey for antibodies against maedi-visna in sheep in Poland.

Eighteen flocks of sheep were serologically tested for antibody to maedi-visna virus. A total of 4284 serum samples were tested by agar gel diffusion test and 1015 (24%) were found positive. Prevalence of infection increased with the age of sheep.
