Purpose: To describe factors influencing the potential for abusive parenting by rural mothers of low-birth-weight children (< 2,500 gm). Low-birth-weight (LBW) children are at risk for child abuse. However, little is known about the added risks created for these children by rural residency.

Intracavernous pressure during erection in rats: an integrative approach based on telemetric recording.

To better understand the similarities and differences in the neural control of penile erection occurring in different contexts, we recorded intracavernous pressure (ICP) in conscious rats using a miniaturized telemetric device. ICP changes during reflexive, noncontact, and apomorphine-induced erections were characterized by a plateau increase surmounted by peaks. Plateaus were also elicited by cavernous nerve stimulation in anesthetized rats, suggesting that the cavernous nerve represents the final common proerectile autonomic pathway in these contexts and that it responds similarly to information originating in the periphery or in supraspinal nuclei.

Mounting and brief noncontact exposure of males to receptive females facilitate reflexive erection in rats, even after hypogastric nerve section.

In three experiments, reflexive erection in male rats was facilitated by housing the males for 2 min with inaccessible sexually receptive females. In Experiment 1, males were sexually naive or experienced and received two reflexive erection tests, 1 week apart, immediately after the males were exposed to receptive females, to unreceptive females, or to no females (n = 8 per group). Considerable neurochemical evidence links dopamine (DA) in nucleus accumbens (NAcc) to male sexual behavior. The present experiments were conducted to extend this information to the male's sexual response to remote stimuli from estrous female (noncontact erection; NCE). Male rats were tested for copulation and NCE after either 6-hydroxydopamine (6-OHDA) or radiofrequency (RF) lesions in NAcc).

Induction of allergic and autoimmune reactions by drugs and other chemicals constitutes a major public health problem. Elucidation of the underlying mechanisms might help improve diagnostic tools and therapeutic approaches. Here, Peter Griem and colleagues focus on several aspects of neoantigen formation by xenobiotics: metabolism of xenobiotics into reactive, haptenic metabolites; polymorphisms of metabolizing enzymes; induction of costimulatory signals; and sensitization of T cells.

Mothers' potential for child abuse: the roles of childhood abuse and social resources.

Background: The mechanism by which some victims of childhood abuse become abusive parents, whereas others do not, is not well understood. Previous empirical evidence indicates that social resources may modify the cycle of abuse or maladaptive parenting; however, the effects of different dimensions of social resources have not been compared.

Objectives: To determine whether a measure of mothers' potential for physical child abuse was related to their retrospective reports of physical and sexual abuse before 18 years of age and to investigate the potential buffering effects of multiple dimensions of social resources on the relationship between childhood abuse and mothers' potential for physical child abuse.

Impaired sexual response after lesions of the paraventricular nucleus of the hypothalamus in male rats.

N-methyl-D-aspartic acid (NMDA) or radiofrequency (RF) lesions were made in the paraventricular nucleus of the hypothalamus (PVH) of male rats. The rats were tested for copulation, noncontact erection (NCE) evoked by remote cues from estrous females, and (after RF lesions) reflexive erection. NMDA, which destroyed parvocellular but spared magnocellular neurons, caused no deficits in copulation but caused longer NCE latencies and fewer NCEs.

Home uterine activity monitoring in the prevention of very low birth weight.

Objectives: Despite controversy regarding the efficacy of home uterine activity monitoring (HUAM), it is currently licensed for detection of preterm labor in women with previous preterm deliveries. In practice, however, it is being more widely utilized in an effort to prevent preterm delivery. This study seeks to determine which group of mothers delivering very low birth weight (VLBW) infants would have qualified for HUAM given three different sets of criteria and in which women it could have been used to help prolong gestation.

Erection evoked in male rats by airborne scent from estrous females.

In the presence of inaccessible estrous females, male rats display penile erections and associated stereotypic behavior indicative of sexual arousal. The effective stimuli for these noncontact erections (NCEs) had not been determined, but bedding soiled by estrous females was known to be ineffective. The present experiments tested for a potential role for volatile olfactory cues in evoking NCE.

Amnioscopic endofetal illumination with infrared-guided fiber.

Minimally invasive amnioscopic surgery has several potential advantages over traditional open hysterotomy, including the reduction of the risk of preterm labor and spontaneous abortion. Adequate visibility of the fetal target organ is obligate to the success of in utero procedures. This is a preliminary report on the use of an end-emitting infrared fiber (750 microns; 810-nm wavelength) that allows image fusion with Infravision videocamera systems (Gabriel Medical, Lafayette, LA).

Cutaneous adverse reaction to ciprofloxacin: demonstration of specific lymphocyte proliferation and cross-reactivity to ofloxacin in vitro.

Ciprofloxacin (CPFX) is a widely used fluoroquinolone antibiotic, inducing cutaneous adverse drug reactions in about 1 to 2% of the treated patients. Conclusive diagnosis of drug allergy, however, still remains a major problem in daily clinical practice. Here, we present 2 patients with drug allergy to CPFX.

Lesions in medial preoptic area and bed nucleus of stria terminalis: differential effects on copulatory behavior and noncontact erection in male rats.

The goal of these studies was to assess the regulatory roles of the medial preoptic area (MPOA) and the bed nucleus of the stria terminalis (BST) in sexual arousal, inferred from noncontact erection (NCE) evoked in male rats by remote cues from estrous females. NCE and copulatory behavior were recorded before and after quinolinic acid or radiofrequency (RF) lesions were made in the MPOA (Experiments 1-3) or RF lesions were made in the BST (Experiment 4). All males with MPOA lesions, particularly in the rostral region, displayed severe deficits in copulation but little or no decrement in NCE.

Parenting attitudes and behaviors of low-income single mothers with young children.

The purpose of this study was to explore parenting attitudes and behaviors of low-income single mothers with preschool-aged children. As part of a longitudinal study of the health of single-mother families, 44 unstructured and semistructured interviews were conducted over a 1-year period with a subsample of nine mothers. The mothers modelled desired behaviors and values, but held unrealistic expectations for child behaviors.

Anterolateral dynamized instrumentation and fusion for unstable thoracolumbar and lumbar burst fractures.

Study Design: A retrospective chart review of 36 patients treated with dynamized anterolateral instrumentation and fusion after decompression for thoracolumbar and lumbar burst fractures is presented.

Objectives: To evaluate a device that allows continual bone graft vertebral endplate compression and determine its potential for healing in patients with thoracolumbar and lumbar burst fractures.

Assessment of access strategies for fetoscopic urologic surgery: preliminary results.

Attempted endoscopic fetal interventions have been increasingly reported, given the knowledge that minimizing the trauma to the uterus by a small access portal can allow prolonged amnioscopic-guided surgery. Numerous fetal anomalies have been targeted for these interventions, including congential obstructive uropathies. This preliminary investigation explored innovative access strategies utilizing time-dated pregnant ewes, 95 to 100 days' gestation (term 145 days).

Effects of p-chlorophenylalanine on reflexive and noncontact penile erections in male rats.

To clarify the role of serotonin in penile erection, testosterone-primed castrated male rats were treated with the serotonin-synthesis inhibitor, p-chlorophenylalanine (pCPA), and reflexive erection (RE; male supine, penile sheath retracted) and noncontact erection (NCE; penile erection evoked by remote sexual stimuli) tests were performed. Half the males were injected with 100 mg/kg pCPA 4 times before each test; control males were treated with saline instead of pCPA. In the RE test, compared to the control group, pCPA-treated males had a shorter erection latency, but they also displayed fewer erections.

Lamotrigine-induced Stevens-Johnson syndrome: demonstration of specific lymphocyte reactivity in vitro.

The novel antiepileptic drug lamotrigine (LTG) is effective as an adjunctive medication in partial seizures. The main adverse effects of LTG are skin eruptions, occurring in 3-10% of the treated patients, but these are rarely severe. The risk of cutaneous side effects is increased in patients receiving sodium valproate comedication, probably by doubling the plasma half-life of LTG due to competition with hepatic glucuronidation.

The popliteal lymph node assay in mice: screening of drugs and other chemicals for immunotoxic hazard.

The popliteal lymph node assay (PLNA) in mice represents a predictive test for assessing the sensitizing (allergenic and autoimmunogenic) potential of drugs and low molecular weight chemicals. Measuring activation of the draining lymph node of the hind paw, the PLNA facilitates the detection and analysis of immunotoxic effects in a rapid and reproducible manner. An attractive feature of the PLNA is that it can be performed in combination with the routine toxicity testing required for new drugs.
