Article Synopsis
  • This study explored the effectiveness of using the ureteral diameter ratio (UDR) for predicting and managing vesicoureteral reflux (VUR) by reviewing data from multiple scientific databases.
  • The analysis included 13 retrospective studies, revealing that lower UDR is associated with spontaneous resolution of VUR, while higher UDR correlates with increased risk of urinary tract infections (UTIs) and the need for surgical intervention.
  • The findings highlight a need for further research to establish specific UDR cut-off values for better clinical decision-making regarding VUR outcomes.

Purpose: The aim of this study was to determine the utility of prophylactic antibiotics before pyloromyotomy for the prevention of Surgical Site Infections (SSI) among children with Infantile Hypertrophic Pyloric Stenosis (IHPS).

Methods: A systematic search of PubMed, Scopus, Embase, and Web of Science databases was performed to identify papers published till 30th July 2024. The main outcome of interest was the incidence of SSIs.

Background: The occupational hazards of glutaraldehyde are well known; the possibility of harm to the patients has been highlighted in the form of isolated reports only.

Objective: To synthesize evidence for contact mucosal injury or injury due to intraperitoneal instillation of glutaraldehyde following its use during laparoendoscopy.

Materials And Methods: The current review is Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) compliant.

Background: Virtual reality (VR) refers to a computer-generated simulation or environment that can be experienced and interacted with by a person through special electronic equipment, such as a headset with a screen and motion-tracking sensors. VR has been used as a distraction technique to alleviate pain and discomfort during medical procedures or as an alternative to traditional pain medication. This article explores VR's effectiveness in reducing pain in pediatric patients undergoing painful clinical procedures.

Introduction: Pelvi-Ureteric Junction Obstruction (PUJO) is a common cause of hydronephrosis (HDN) in children. While ultrasonography (USG) is useful for initial assessment and grading of hydronephrosis, it cannot differentiate obstructive from non-obstructive cases. Renal Dynamic Scintigraphy (RDS) confirms the diagnosis but involves ionizing radiation exposure.

Article Synopsis
  • The study aimed to compare two surgical incision methods, umbilical (UMB) and right upper quadrant (RUQ), for treating infantile hypertrophic pyloric stenosis (IHPS) in infants.
  • Out of 15 studies involving 2,964 infants, the RUQ incision was associated with shorter operative times and lower rates of complications like wound infections and mucosal perforations compared to the UMB incision.
  • Although UMB incisions create less visible scars, they result in more complications, indicating the need for careful consideration and discussion with caregivers about surgical options; further research is also needed due to the methodological limitations in many of the included studies.

The aim of this study was to analyze the role of thiol/disulfide homeostasis (TDH) parameters as an indicator of oxidative stress in acute appendicitis (AA). PubMed, EMBASE, Web of Science, and Scopus databases were systematically searched. Studies reporting on TDH in AA (both complicated and uncomplicated cases) were included.

Introduction: A scientometric analysis was conducted to characterize the global research publications in extrahepatic portal venous obstruction (EHPVO), and state-of-the-art visualization graphics were generated to provide insight into specific bibliometric variables.

Materials And Methods: The Web of Science database was accessed for research productivity and bibliometric variables of countries, institutions, authors, journals, and content analysis of top-20 cited documents were performed. Collaborative networks and co-occurrence of keywords map were generated using VOSviewer software.

Ventilating a pediatric patient during thoracoscopy is challenging. Few studies have highlighted the impact of capnothorax in children by measuring regional cerebral oxygen saturation (rcSO) with near infrared spectroscopy. In this systematic review, we aimed to summarize the data from relevant studies and assess whether thoracoscopy in children is associated with intraoperative pathological cerebral desaturation.

Aims: GDNF plays a crucial role in the stimulation of recovery, neuroplasticity and synaptic reorganization after spinal cord injury providing neuroprotection and neuroregeneration. Plasma GDNF levels are upregulated in cases of spina bifida owing to the intrauterine damage of the exposed spinal cord. Our aim was to compare the plasma GDNF levels in patients of spina bifida with non-spina bifida cases and assess the correlation with neurological impairment at one year of follow up.

Introduction: Despite the advancements in technique and technology, urethrocutaneous fistula (UCF) formation continues to be the most common complication after hypospadias repair.

Objective: The objective of the current synthesis is to define the indications of PATIO technique for UCF repair.

Materials And Methods: The review was conducted in accordance with the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) guidelines.

Article Synopsis
  • - Vesicoureteral reflux (VUR) is a condition in 1-2% of children that can lead to serious kidney issues, and the treatment focuses on preventing urinary tract infections and long-term complications, necessitating personalized management strategies.
  • - A review of literature on Positional Instillation of Contrast Cystography (PIC) reveals it detects VUR in 73% of cases with negative voiding cystographies, identifying significant rates of both low-grade (81%) and high-grade (19%) VUR, along with a 41% incidence of occult contralateral VUR.
  • - Despite positive results in diagnosing VUR with PIC, caution is advised due to the need for more thorough studies to validate these findings
