Article Synopsis
  • SARS-CoV-2, the virus responsible for COVID-19, can be found in patients' saliva, sputum, and feces, leading to the detection of its RNA in sewage as a way to monitor the spread of the virus.
  • A study conducted in Tokyo from May 2020 to June 2022 utilized an automated genetic testing method to monitor two wastewater treatment plants for SARS-CoV-2 RNA.
  • The results showed that this automated platform is effective for detecting SARS-CoV-2 RNA and identifying specific spike gene mutations, which correspond to the current status of the pandemic.

Article Synopsis
  • Genetic characterization of the rubella virus (RV) is essential for detecting and diagnosing both endemic transmissions and imported cases, but the currently used E1 gene sequencing may not be sufficient.
  • During the 2018-2019 RV outbreak in Tokyo, identical E1 gene sequences were found in non-linked patients, raising concerns about distinguishing between endemic and imported strains.
  • The study suggests that by analyzing the more diverse E2 gene in conjunction with the E1 region, better insights into the RV strains can be gained, potentially enhancing epidemiological evaluations.

Asymptomatic carriers have a major influence on the spreading of norovirus infections. The objective of this study was to examine the characteristics of patients and asymptomatic carriers affected by norovirus-related community gastroenteritis outbreaks. No significant difference between the two groups was observed in terms of the number of norovirus-antibody complexes with respect to total numbers.
