Fibrosarcoma is rare in pediatric age group. Its diagnosis in infants may be difficult clinically and histologically. A twenty-day infant presented with a rapidly growing mass in the right forearm.
View Article and Find Full Text PDFBackground: Workers working close to salt milling plants may inhale salt particles floating in the air, leading to a rise in plasma sodium, which, in turn, may increase the blood pressure and the risk of hypertension.
Methods: To test the above hypothesis, occupational health check-up camps were organized near salt manufacturing units and all workers were invited for a free health examination. The workers who worked with dry salt in the vicinity of salt milling plants were defined as "non-brine workers," while those working in brine pans located far away from milling plants were defined as "brine workers.
Introduction: Endoscopy is commonly performed to evaluate for suspected or established esophageal diseases including gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) and its complications. Setting: Subjects attending the District Tuberculosis Clinic and a Teaching Hospital in Jodhpur were studied at the Desert Medicine Research Centre, Jodhpur.
Objectives: To confirm the effect of temperature on the results of the blood glutaraldehyde test (GT) and to examine the sensitivity and specificity of the restandardised test procedure.
Design: Blood glutaraldehyde gelification time (BGGT) was compared, in the same blood samples, at 19, 22 and 25 degrees C and after storage at 1) room temperature and at 2) 2-8 degrees C for 3-5 h, using the paired t-test.
Workers in the salt industry are exposed to direct sunlight, salt dust and contact with brine. To assess their awareness, attitude and practices related to occupational health problems, 205 salt workers were interviewed about health hazards and problems related to their working conditions, usage of protective measures and suggestions for their improvisation. View Article and Find Full Text PDFChanges in spontaneous activity within the cortex recognized by subthreshold fluctuations of the membrane potential of cortical neurons modified the response of cortical neurons to sensory stimuli. Sensory stimuli occurring in the hyperpolarized "down" state evoked a larger depolarization and were more effective in evoking action potentials than stimuli occurring in the depolarized "up" state. Direct electrical stimulation of the thalamus showed the same dependence on the cell's state at the time of the stimulus, ruling out a strictly thalamic mechanism.

A first group of animals was trained to whisk freely in air and served to establish the baseline variability in bilateral symmetry. We observed that the electromyogram (EMG) activity across the two mystacial pads was rhythmic and synchronous to within 2 ms on a whisk-by-whisk basis; this value is small in comparison with the approximately 50 ms required for protraction during the whisk cycle.

To determine whether whiskers are constrained to move together, we trained rats to use two whiskers on the same side of the face in simple behavioral tasks and videotaped the whiskers during the task. Here we report that the movement of adjacent whiskers is usually synchronous but can diverge: 1) the distance between whiskers can vary dramatically during movement; 2) one whisker can move while the second one remains stationary; 3) two whiskers can simultaneously move in opposite directions; and 4) one whisker can be maintained in contact with an object while the other is retracted and protracted.

The effects of "barrel cortex" ablation upon the biometrics of "exploratory" whisking were examined in three head-fixed rats which had previously sustained unilateral ablation of the left cortical "barrel field" under electrophysiological control. Unconditioned movements of a pair of bilaterally homologous whiskers (C-1, Right, Left) were monitored, optoelectronically, with other whiskers present. Whisking movements on the intact and ablated side were analyzed with respect to kinematics (protraction amplitude and velocity) whisking frequency and phase relationships between whisking movement on the two sides of the face.

One critical component of any tactile system is contact. Progesterone, the precursor of urinary pregnanediol glucuronide, is a secretory product of either adrenal or ovarian origin. We postulated that suppression of pituitary gonadotrophin secretion by down-regulation with a long-acting gonadotrophin-releasing hormone agonist, leuprolide acetate, would decrease ovarian but not adrenal pregnanediol glucuronide.

This type of synaptic plasticity in rat somatic sensory cortex, called "whisker pairing plasticity," first appears in cells above and below the layer IV barrels. These are also the cortical layers that receive the densest cholinergic inputs from the nucleus basalis.
