- Type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) affects around 10% of adults worldwide and can complicate the risk of conditions like gastrointestinal bleeding and cancer.
- In a study of 633 endoscopic patients, those with T2DM had lower instances of epigastric pain and heartburn, but showed significantly higher rates of anemia and lower hemoglobin and serum iron levels.
- The results suggest that while T2DM is linked to increased gastritis and certain risks, it appears to have an inverse relationship with gastroesophageal reflux symptoms, and smoking further elevates the risk of infection.
