Mucormycosis is a rare invasive fungal infection that affects immunocompromised patients and is fatal when not identified and treated early. Diagnosis is often delayed as the symptoms are nonspecific and frequently mimic other common diseases. Pediatric patients with cancer are at risk for the infection; however, there is limited research that applies directly to the pediatric population.

Since the beginning of United Network of Organ Sharing data collection in 1987, a total of 8,333 pediatric patients have received a heart transplant in the United States. Because these patients now have longer graft success with improved care and immunosuppression, many of them are entering adolescence and young adulthood. Primary care pediatric nurse practitioners need to be alert to the prevalence of noncompliance with treatment in heart transplant patients, which continues to be highest in adolescence.

Adolescents bear an undue portion of this burden because of increased physiologic susceptibility, higher rates of reinfection, and developmental age. Despite expedited partner therapy (EPT) being legalized in 39 states, health care providers still report infrequently providing EPT to their adolescent patients.

Sexual minority youth in military families have a unique set of stressors that affect their mental, emotional, and physical health. There is a pronounced gap in data addressing the specific stressors of this population and how they interact to impact the health of the adolescent. The culture of the United States military has historically been heterosexist and homophobic, propelled primarily by policies that restricted the recruitment and service of lesbian, gay, bisexual, or transgender individuals, leading to a continued secrecy around sexual orientation that may affect how sexual minority youth within the community view themselves.
