Health system data from a large academic medical center revealed a 14% lower rate of colorectal cancer (CRC) screening in resident patient panels compared to faculty patient panels. This resident-led quality improvement (QI) work identified causes for disparities in CRC screening and implemented an innovative panel management intervention to reduce CRC screening disparities. Analysis was conducted across two academic primary care clinics at a single institution.

Purpose Of Review: This review describes pathologic conditions of retrograde flow into the esophagus along with recent therapeutic advances and treatment options.

Recent Findings: The esophagus facilitates anterograde and retrograde movement of contents, the latter of which is mediated by transient lower esophageal sphincter relaxations (TLESRs). Gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) often includes esophageal-specific symptoms such as heartburn or regurgitation.

In our present clinical paradigm, patient symptoms and presentation in the setting of traditional findings from endoscopy (erosive esophagitis, Barrett's esophagus, reflux-mediated stenosis), esophageal high-resolution manometry, and/or ambulatory reflux monitoring (distal esophageal acid exposure time, numbers of reflux events, reflux-symptom association) guide the care of patients with suspected GERD. However, novel metrics and techniques acquired from or performed at endoscopy, manometry, or pH-impedance monitoring, beyond conventional evaluation, are of great interest to the gastroenterology community given the frequent (and sometimes challenging) presentation of suspected GERD. These novel and evolving diagnostic approaches have the potential to enhance the evaluation of these patients and optimize their management.

Background And Aims: Foreign body ingestions (FoBIs) are a common cause for medical attention. However, trends and patterns of adult FoBIs as well as associations with clinical comorbidities and behavioral attributes have not been elucidated beyond single institutional experiences.

Methods: We utilized survey data from the National Electronic Injury Surveillance System to examine fundamental characteristics of adult FoBIs involving consumer products between 2000 and 2017 across the United States.
